The mother is a whore. The children already have a father, so she can't be looking for a surrogate. No, she's probably "lonely" (i.e. desirous of a sexual partner). The older boy should be smart enough to figure this out. It would have been interesting if the older boy had developed contempt for his mother, rather than Peter Weller's character, for risking their safety because she was horny.
