Go to the Render buttons, and change the Output Type to a video format (I like to use AVI JPEG, myself). It'll also show the output directory, which you can change if you want. Render the animation, and the file will be there in that directory. (I'm not sure about playback within Blender, I usually just open the video file.)
when 2.5 comes out officially, it is said it will be called beta0. That mean that even then they expect it to change, be unstable and that you should report errors, so that it can be improved. I am using 2.5 now and having a lot of fun. Not ready for production usage but great for play and it helps make it better with bug reports!!

yep. I had a black background image in the Blender UI, recorded it and used compositing afterwards.
