Thanks! I am against parkour competitions, but really enjoy into this "type" of competition, because is not a competition in which the artistic freerunning is the focus ...
I love this competition, it's a really fun way to evolve.
P.S. Just a thought, but this type of formal competition (unlike the redbull freerunning comp etc) might actually give you some quantified markers of your progress, time take to do such, weight moved like such, or particular techniques but that's subjective and you can do it anyway.
Having competitions like this one might give you good ideas and a good impetus for your personal training, which is largely about getting PRs, not shitting on others.
All of this 'the founder said blablabla' nonsense is getting to me. Anyone who was a child once played the 'climbing round the room without touching the floor' game and so invented their own versions of Parkour. Feel free to sell the rights to whoever you want but get over this telling other people what to do with their lives nonsense.
David Belle is not the devine authority on parkour, he is merely a man, subject to his opinion. I respect David Belle for his athleticism and what he has accomplished in the past, but his opinion is not the divine mandate on what is or is not parkour, and his opinion on competition is one person's opinion. It is not right or wrong, and should not be sourced for supporting your own argument.
Erwan LeCorre is not an authority on parkour, his opinion of competition is merely that, his opinion.
@brendandudley haha. As much as this is common sense, it will never set in. A large portion of people just believe things without question or common sense.
For some reason people have this mindset: certain pieces of information simply must be true - simply because it came from a certain source.
However, I understand if someone is listening to and trying to *understand* a certain piece of information from a source. But, it certainly isn't truth just because it came from a source.
This competition was not open to interpretation, the winners were clearly defined by their times and by completion of a course. This is the truest form of measuring a competition for parkour. Those who succeeded had the fastest and most efficient times and movements.
This competition has shown us how we ourselves can be more efficient, and how quickly we could react in an emergency situation. For those who do not like competition or do not want to participate in competition, DON'T. If you want to accurately judge the competition, come to the next Colorado National Jam in August 2011 and see it firsthand. This will allow you to ask questions and gain a better understanding of the course and competition.
Great edit Noah, great fun video. I enjoyed the Ninja Warrior deal at the '09 National Jam and hopefully I'll be healthy again for the 2011 Jam. So good to see so many of my friends having fun.
All the anti-competition people have yet to come up with an argument based on evidence rather than opinion. I'm reading a whole bunch of arguments based on appeal to authority fallacies, false analogies, and the usual ad hominem stuff. Take a logic class, refine your arguments and please come back.
Kind of have to find the funny about people coming onto the internet and trashing the way other people have fun with what they love because it is different. Just get off of your asses and do parkour, stop spending so much time dictating to other people what you think parkour is. No money was made here and EVEN IF IT WAS, all of the athletes appreciated it for what it is, and we all still train personal betterment and love parkour for its freeing philosophies.
@JakeBenSmith i agree, me and my friend are addicted and we love parkour, we do it everyday and its fun no matter what, people should shut the fuck up and stop saying its lame
For anyone who questions this video, you all really had to be there to totally appreciate this. The spirit of everyone there was united. Everyone cheered each other on and the very practical themed courses (pulling a simulated body from underneath the tire, pushing the "car", saving the baby, etc.) were brilliant. I've been to the COPK National Jam twice, and I will keep coming back for the great people and great talent it attracts.
Really, what's so wrong with competition? It was something people wanted to do, and had fun doing it themselves, testing their limits on a fun course. Just because someone does parkour shouldn't mean they can't have fun testing themselves out on a sweet course. It was a blast, and I think people need to chill out trying to tell others what to do, or rather what not to do. We aren't telling you to compete, so don't tell us we can't. Just have fun with your training :)
@Getz01 just a few side notes on your comment. a) there was no judge, everything was just timed, your only judge was the clock. (which is good for improving the efficiency of parkour) b) I bet one day you will. (but that's just my opinion) and c) You used Ryan's demondrills to get into shape and you're sorry for it because he held an awesome, just plain fun competition? (hmmm... interesting)
Everything in life is competition, those of you who haven't yet realized this, will hopefully someday mature enough to recognize it. Competition is an animal instinct of survival and will carry itself into everything you do. Whether or not you would like to admit that you compete, you do... each and everyone of you. you compete with others every time you try something that's already been done. sure you can "do it for yourself" but it's still competing bc you want to do what they already did.
If you really need to have those kind of competitions or events, at least have some courtesy to call it something else.
Honestly, this competition looks forced, but that's what you'd get when you combine parkour with competing.
In my opinion, no one was "the best" there. Everyone bid TREIR best and that's what parkour is all about. Not compairing yourself to others, but only to yourself. And doing it for you, not to beat someone else or be bettter.
So much negativity going on. I thought it was awesome. Of all the competitions (Art of Motion/MTV ) this is hands down the best.
The fact that it was free makes it all better. All the "anti competition" people out there, are you gonna claim that you've never tried to reach a higher wall climb or farther precision than a training partner did? Ever?
Parkour competitions are going to happen, and already are, so there's no point it trying to stop it. Kudos to Ryan for trying to make it good.
You claim that because there has been competion on making the best parkour videos for years on youtube, makes it acceptable to arrange your competion. I just find this strange. So i could say "rasism in soccer has been there for years, thats why I will support it"
Of course you have your right to be PRO competition, many traceurs just know that competetion only makes the world a darker place.
I reckon you do to, but maybe you just love to compare people with eachother to get a boost or?
Since you obviously didn't even try to define Parkour for yourself (otherwise you probably wouldn't mind about any "definition") you have to follow the words of the founder, because he's the only one who barely has the right to define it.
And now tell me when David said, "you need competition if you do Parkour"?!
I rather remember hearing him say "Parkour is not about competition at all. You've got to stay true to yourself. -To last and to be." That quotes are more important for me
@Getz01 This comp was free of charge and I didnt compete. I made this competition so that people could have fun, learn something, and open up their eyes about competition. Everyone there left with a positive feeling of what went on. Why should there be no competition in PK? For years now, it has been a competition of who can make the best video on Youtube. Parkour without timed courses is like martial arts without sparring. Unless you time yourself on courses, you cant learn true efficiency.
"Unless you time yourself on courses, you cant learn true efficiency."
Might be true. But why would this be the reason to compete against others.
And to the Martial Arts metaphor:
Dude, look at WuShu or in a way also Capoeira - those are not truly meant to defend one self, but they are Martial ARTS. Did you forget about the ART of movement? "We NEED competition to stay true to the definition of Parkour"
If you didn't define Parkour for yourself, you gotta stay to what David says..
@Getz01 Holy shit everyone stop hating on Ryan, this competition was for FUN. Everyone talking about how its tainting their own training. Here's the thing, if your against competition, DON"T COMPETE. The competition brought the national jam to one specific place and everyone who was there had an awesome time. The athletes supported each other along with the crowd. So stop bitching from your keyboards, worrying about what other people are doing and GO TRAIN!
@TheSnowmanFilms I'm not hating on him. If that is what you think I was saying? That would mean that I hate every human on earth that do sports.
I sure will NOT compete, I do not need you to tell me that. If you wanted to do a jam, you could have better organized a charity in which you could donate some gathered money to somone that needs money, and still have a blast of fun training parkour all together, and not competeing against the clock. Sorry all, but I like parkour as it was once known.
I agree with Getz, parkour has no competitions, it's not a sport, to me it's an art. I like everything about strength training and skills, watched all the videos of DemonDrills, but events like this are giving the wrong message about parkour.
What's next, a ranking list of best traceurs, a premier/major league, multiple xtreme sports competitions, sponsorship of Red Bull?
@Lobo1888 We NEED competition to stay true to the definition of Parkour. Without going up against the clock or another person for time, you will never know what is truly the fastest, most efficient way. It is like claiming to know martial arts without ever sparring or applying it in some way. Right now, everyone in parkour competes to make the best youtube video. This competition opened people's eyes on how to truly train and practice parkour for speed/efficiency. Which one is the better reason?
Sorry your argumentation is not correct. If two persons compete, the efficiency of the movement is also defined by the physical condition in which the persons are.
Btw, Time is one factor concerning efficiency, another one is the energy which you are using in your movements. And again, we are here at the point of physical condition. There is no reason to compete against each other - you can also have a discussion about efficient movements and try out in training.
@lolliwarnke Time is the most important factor. The point of conserving energy is so that you don't overexert and fail at your goal. The end goal of an obstacle course or escaping or reaching in an emergency situation is still based on time.
Of course this took into account people's physical condition. How is that a bad thing? To me, that is another great thing about this competition! It opened people's eyes about how much faster, stronger, and better they can be when in top physical condition!
by Erwan LeCorre: Competition pushes people to fight against others for the satisfaction of a crowd and/or the benefits of a few business people by changing its mindset. Parkour is unique and cannot be a competitive sport unless it ignores its altruistic core of self development. If parkour becomes a sport, it will be hard to seriously teach and spread parkour as a non-competitive activity.
@Lobo1888 That's just an opinion and a blind generalization at that. Millions of people play competitive sports worldwide and for the most part, these sports are filled with positivity, benefits, friendships, and growth. The negative aspects of competition in sports are brought on by a small percentage of bad sports, not the competition itself.
Some weird events in there, but over all looked like a lot of fun. What made you guys decide to add in some of the classic ninja warrior events like the bar jumps instead of just keeping it parkour and lifting?
@jusres The goal was to have 4 courses to test different things which means the overall winner was the 1 who was generally most skilled. Course 1 was speed based with some strategy. Course 2 was a real life scenario where we set up pretend scenarios like saving a kitten in a tree, saving a trapped person, pushing a car, planting a tree, transporting a baby, etc. Course 3 was based off Ninja Warrior. And course 4 was back to pure parkour/speed but they got 3 runs to try to improve their times.
why do you think that this is parkour???????????This what u guys are doing is not called parkour its just a stupid game like wipeout or something like that......
@nobodypk it was called a ninja warrior style competition, the last stage was the parkour one. I know they've done other ninja warrior comps in the past, i'm hoping they're inching towards whole competitions similar to the last stage of this one.
Oh ok thanks. I've never had (or been on) one, but I'm going to by the parts to make my own. If I'm getting it just for balance training for Parkour, do you think I should get the thicker or thinner line?
@ericds33 Thicker is a bit easier but it doesn't really matter. And you are right, you can easily make your own out of materials from Home Depot or something like that.
This video is too jerky for me to enjoy. Everything looked good otherwise. Keep it up, Apex.

The most ridiculous thing in the world.
Parkour hmm,not in this vid.
You should have called it ninja warriors or something like that

@nobodypk it was called a ninja warrior style competition, the last stage was the parkour one. I know they've done other ninja warrior comps in the past, i'm hoping they're inching towards whole competitions similar to the last stage of this one.

Those Gibbon slacklines are 2 inches thick right? is there any reason to get those instead of a 1 inch one?
Oh, awesome competition btw! I wish I would have heard about it.

@ericds33 i think so. the one we had up is a trick line, meaning it has extra grippy stuff on it to work on things like jumps, spins, and flips.

@DemonDrills
Oh ok thanks. I've never had (or been on) one, but I'm going to by the parts to make my own. If I'm getting it just for balance training for Parkour, do you think I should get the thicker or thinner line?
ericds33 1 year ago
@ericds33 Thicker is a bit easier but it doesn't really matter. And you are right, you can easily make your own out of materials from Home Depot or something like that.

@DemonDrills
Alright, thanks. I think I'm going to get the thinner one since it's harder to balance on. Hopefully I don't want to do tricks later on haha.
