your work is excellent. I know I can purchase on line painting lessons, however do you sell videos of your painting lessons. I would love to purchase & call them my own.
This is amazing. I have a question, though. How do you get your painting to show so much depth? I tried painting a landscape using this as an example and it just looks... flat. Like in yours it looks like you're on a hill looking out over a whole expanse of hills. But mine just looks like you're on a flat surface looking up at the hills.
Could this be used to paint forest from a far distance? You see, I'm in the middle of a landscape painting that is viewed from the top of one mountain toward another. BUT, there is a LOT of greenery at the base of the other mountain. I would say that my style is more impressionistic... But I don't want a big green blob. :/
Hello Mr.Tim! I'm 14 years old and I love to paint, especially with acrylic paint. You're truly inspiring and I want to growp up to be as good as you!
Really appreciated the tip, working on a wheat field of tall grass leading into a horizon and was wondering how to tackle it. This helped, any suggestions on tall wheat field?
Thank you so much for the video! It helps alot, But Tim, i need more tips on painting! Will you please message me some more of your art tip videos? I'm good at the drawings but the paintings I need help with. My dream is to become an artist but I need tips on better painting skills. Thanks for the help! :)
Tim, Thank you so so so much for this! u just opened up A LOT of possibilities for me. I was intimidated with landscapes because of the grass and the bushes, etc.. My high school teacher said to draw each blade of grass lol.
I took a perfectly good fan brush and cut some bristles out and crushed the metal portion to separate the bristles it worked great compared to when I was using it brand new.
Good video... you're a good painter (I know because I paint). You didn't mention if it was oils or acrylic and you didn't mention what colours you have mixed for your grass colours. Also you make the foreground lighter than the distant grass. Was the under-painting dry before you did this? If oil, it would have to be dry first to work. If acrylic, how do you keep the paint from drying on the palette. Where I live you would have less than 5 minutes working time with the palette seen here.
I'm a beginner without taking any lessons... however your video has been my greatest teacher. I have learnt to use a fan brush, and it is really works amazingly!!!
I love your paintings! :)) I am a beginner landcsape painter hehe:) My paintings look flat, So thankk you for these videos. I am learning from them :)
omg at 1:54 i started smiling xD im not rlly interested in painting... now i am!!! TT-TT our mural painting didnt go out very well... alring' it was my first time after all
Tim i used your method with grass to paint my 1st landscape here on the austrian border. it worked well and everyone loves the painting. thanks. oh clouds elude me completely. can we have more on clouds .
good video man and good tips for beginners. fail to see where all that agroo is coming from in other comments. keep up the good work and hope to see more
Im new to painting and don't have any old brushes just yet, will a regular fan brush work as well? Also do you work in other mediums besides acrylics?
5/5 great tutorial, one thing i noticed umm as you explained about the light coming from a direction i think you needed some more shading around the tree grass area :P but really great tutorial amazing landscape paintings keep up the great work.
yeah i sort of thought that too....then i saw it from the perspective that the tree was on a hill, higher than your level of view, so you wouldnt see much shadow at all : )
Love the painting...its all about ART...Like someone said to me once...no one may like what you do, but if you like what you made, its a work of art...moonlightgarden: its all in your eye...personally, i found it very enchanting...its when we try to limit ourselves to what looks "natural" that we get warped...just go with the flow.....
hippie stoner? do you know how to rub ppl the wrong way...you sound like a real jerk...you seem like a little 2 bit artist who likes to comment on all ppls work without knowing what art is all about...ARTIST???You sound like an old fart...and bet you paint that way....also maybe you need to be high to paint and for ppl to be high to respond to your work...but the world is full of ppl like you today...dont know nothing and want to pretend thay know all...and BTW you ARE warped
well i see like a typical coward, you spew your garbage and then censor me..well welcome to my other account..first of all i would like to say that its obvious you have some deep insecurity issues that you need to deal with...a 7 year old wouldnt take offense to what i said and you act like i just stabbed your mother...grow a fucking backbone...and when you say that the world is full of jerks like me, yet YOU are the one throwing all the insults and petty taunts, makes you a fucking hypocrite..
and BTW.......i did apologize to you before you even sent your reply....so if you want to talk art with me fine....but dont bother me with your "im the rightous one and the world is full of people like you" bullshit....you are no better then the next guy pal....you just have extremely thin skin is all...

Hi Tim...great tip. Also the the one you mentioned to get your fan brush ready to creat the effect. Until now I didn't know what to do with it. Do you think the technique would work equally as well using oil? I use water soluable oils. Thanks again. Michael.
Thanks for sharing this tip, I am a visual learner so it helps to see how something is done rather than reading directions on how something is done. :) Do you have any extra old fan brushes??! LMAO, then I can say I own a brush used the famous Tim Gagnon in years to come! Cya.
I've used the same fan brush for this for about 3 years. You can probably pull off the same technique if you just let a fan brush soak in water for 3 or 4 days. It should make the bristles come together.
@gagnonstudio Hog brushes are cheap & would probably work well with this tech brand new. They are marketed as oil brushes. They are not very soft, blonde in color, & are very bristly.
hey i also paint acrylic landscapes. out of curiosity, how much would you price that painting for if you were to sell it?

Do you have any tips to make a brush 'old' like your fanbrush? Kind of a silly question I know, but would you recommend just repeated use?

Fan brushes are good for texturizing, but aren't easy to paint 'solid' shapes with. Use sables for blending and get some synthetics for acrylics. :D

It's a little difficult to see the detail (close-up sometime?).
I recommend alternating the angle of the fan brush, so it doesn't lend to the appearance of being "stamped" on.
Would be great to see the entire painting, step by step.
Thanks!
