Dude, R/S/E series was a little tougher in a lot of aspects. Half the damn trainers were in the ocean, that made it hard to level up efficiently, for me.

It was preparing you to fight the 8th Gym who used nothing but water: Manetrike, Sceptile, Roselia, Groudon, Kyogre can easily conquer this. Blaziken also had fighting attack to use. Swampert had Earthquake (lol, other ground attacks exist?)

Besides, I think Whitney's Miltank's was one of the hardest challenges in the series to conquer right next to beating R/B with Charizard. Major HP, good defenses, and increasingly damaging Rollout with a super effective on most members of any early team.
