And well...when he talks about how he had to learn open handed in order to play his toms the way he wanted..I think Mike Mangini found the answer with those remote hi hats because he uses his right hand hat with the pedal on the left so he can play like an open handed still looking righty..But maybe remote hats werent invented yet
First song is Indian Summer (one of my faves, u can find it on both Out of the blue and Symbiosis albums), last one is Biplane to Bermuda (also from the Symbiosis album, mindblowing)
Simon is an excellent drummer who I think is often forgotten about except among music industry people. He played on Jeff Beck's 1980 album There & Back and just jams on that like no tomorrow. It's great that he does teaching of drums and lesson videos. Great clarity on this video, thanks.
3'22" is flipping so nice, totally nailed groove or what - if only it didn't fade out, arghhhhhh. That drum set is a work of pure art, and sounds really outstanding.
This should really become a band, Andy on guitar, Simon on drums and well I don't know the name of the bassist and sax player but they are awesome. Hopefully they work together in more projects.
i was at this show and let me tell you, simon is an absolute incredible drummer! one of the best! ndugu on the other hand kinda bragged about himself a little too much.
Phillps is a gr8 drummer and he has been so for over 30 years. The fact that Modern Drummer have givng him guest spots at there shows speak volumes about his abillty. Truly one of the gr8 drummers.
I do have to say, though I'm not a "fan" of the music genre, I love watching videos like this, because there's just so much you can take from listening to the experienced drummers from all the genre's of music, and apply it to whatever it is that you're doing in whatever project you have going. Whether that's putting a soft triplet double kick pattern to a jazz lick, or swinging a Whitechapel song, it can all be used to make yourself a better drummer and all around musician.
Do you know which Priest albums he played on? I've always been curious but have never heard what ones. I'd guess British Steel from the tone and authority of those tracks.
Hi Bakersfeast!!! Simon did the studio album Sin After Sin 1977 CBS Records....British Steel was Dave Holland, who was on the majority of Priest's LP's...Rock On!!
He vhas incredible gift of rhythm. I admire. Ahead of his time, cant find the right musicians to challenge him to be even greater. He ever jammed with Geddy & Alex, or Eddie VH ?

I agree! Why would you need to wright anything in 7, with a Clavay thing or what ever? The guy is a class drummer and can groove! Why would you ponce about like that with that talent?
