do all of the mischmetal firesteels on your website perform just as good as the one used in the video. i wanna get one that make the globs of molten metal like you said and not little sparks.
i went onto your website but i cant find any of these ferro rods that u are showing on the vedio.. can you give me a direct link to where i can get these powerful ferro rods please?
@goingprepared Do you have any recommendations for comparable products? My shitty Swiss steel doesn't even compare with this thing. I NEED to find something like this.
has any1 had these breaking on them?? i wanna go as compact as possible to pair it with my izula for an extremely compact and light weight kit but afraid of them breaking on me any1 had any experience with the 1/4" or even smaller?
cheers, always a fan of online retailers who take the time to make video of their products in action and post them, keep it up dude.
@fierwall5 Life depends on the size and how hard you strike it. 3/8" is generally good for around 10,000 scrapes. It will corrode if you get salt water on it (including sweat), but you can just scrape the corrosion off.
ok thanks for this vid, i just ordered one, but ive seen other vids from ppl standing up and doing it and they barley make it to the ground.... how r urs going to teh ground and still bouncing? plz reply, ty
BOUGHT ONE OF THESE FROM YOUR WEBSITE AND YOU MUST HAVE CHANGED THEM SINCE MAKING THIS VIDEO AS IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO SHAVE PIECES OFF OR GET GLOBS OF METAL? ITS ROCK HARD? AND BEFORE YOU SAY ,YES I DO KNOW HOW TO USE IT AND HAVE FIVE OTHER FIRESTEELS FROM COMPETITORS.
@Kylef7735 and what technique do you use to shave pieces of metal off like in the video? the 1 i received is rock hard and impossible to shave pieces off .
@Rhinoch8 I googled it, and i found "Rare Earth" Thingy that sells whatever grade of Mishmetal (due to percentage of iron in the alloy) in whatever form you wanted to. But as you say you sell anywhere in the world, its okay :)
Good review. I like the part when you start to scratch the firesteel and the sparks go down to the cotton ball and it starts to burn. I tried to do the same but i didn't can do it ha :). Good luck.
FireSteel, com is the source, the have them made up in large batches according to their formula and resellers then post them online. So if you have one, it is from the same batch!
are these firesteels the same as the ones from firesteelcom?!?, cause i own the ones from firesteelcom and its f#$king annoying trying to light a fire with them!!
what is the trick? i have bought one and have tried most every striker none made large busting globs of sparks maybe one small "busting" spark in ten tries. it did make normal sparks though.
These are some of the best ferro rods around. Not quite as practical as a blastmatch (tm).
However these ferro rods can ignite birch bark, dry evergreen wood shavings, e.t.c.
I did notice that some parts of these rods that once smooth do not ignite all that well. I roughened up the surface a little with a 32tpi (tooth side) hacksaw blade and the rod started working again.
Going gear now has a custom striker which lasts longer and works better.
Sure, if that rock is made out of steel and has a sharpened edge. :)
Seriously though, you do need a sharp, strong edge, since you are trying to scrape off bits of a metallic alloy. I don't even think a shard of rock that had a sharp edge like flint or shale would be able to handle it since both are relatively brittle and cannot handle pressure well.
I love the fact that you offer USPS first class international mail... it's way cheaper than getting it shipped... now i'm definitely gonna order the Badger...
Excellent video. I would like to oder some of them. Could you please tell me the length and width of the rod in this video you are using. Thanks so much. Is mischmetal the same as a regular fire steel?
The rod in the video is a 3/8" x 4" (Badger) rod with a zebra handle. Mischmetal firesteels are a little softer than the ones that Light my Fire uses, but their sparks burn much longer since they are really little molten globs of metal.
How long do these last? They look awesome.
