I have an 84 wagon and its so freakin hillarious when you are slowly passing another car, inching past them and how people look over like wtf? Classic.
That is SO my 240 Wagon...right down to the mustard Yellow colour. It has 414,000 miles on it ( I believe the 1980 had round headlights, they off set the Volvo emblem on the grill in 1983) but you're right, we old school 240 drivers don't give a fuck what you drive.
I love intimidating new car owners in my 240. It has an exhaust leak and sounds like a harley. The look of sheer terror on peoples faces are priceless. There is no mistake of who owns the road. I do in my swedish tank.
I love my 1981 240 GL with manual transmission. The only down side is that since I have the only car big enough for all my friends to ride in, I end up being the designated driver most of the time.
Nah, they moved onto the 850 to superceed it, they just wanted to compete with Luxury cars, but with that they had to sacrifice a lot of the good things they already had. Actually, Volvo still design and build their cars still, but go along other ideas now (more technology and comfort and less reliability and build quality, it costs less to put airbags in than it does to make something structurally strong)
because they generate more revenue for a car company if they're worthless in 10 years.
though truth be told, I see more modern cars on the road that are 15+ years old than I do cars of the volvo era, even in the same timeframe I didnt see as many volvo 240's around after 15 years. Most people opted for autotragic transmissions, which are garbage and will "kill" the car. (unless you swap a superior manual in)
@classickc I've been asking myself this question a lot as those Volvo 240's are engineered to about 300k plus miles if regular easy maintenance is kept up. The short answer I fear is "there's no money in that". Where's the money in a car that can go 300k miles and still get almost 30mpg on the highway with all that room? What they like to do now is put a lot of toys in the car you don't need and make it look nice whilst they are meant to break down a lot. (America is bought off on toys)
hah, I get the same response in my 240. If I pass somebody, they start to speed up I guess out of a feeling of embarrassment. And then I start to speed up; and dust them. If people try to pass my 240, I'm fighting until the bitter end, and usually win lol.
@rubberrice Is it a diesel? I really want to buy a Volvo 240 dl. What do you recommend? Are they better gas-savers? I've seen several 240 vids and these cars seem to possess much power.
The 200 series turbo's are quite a bit more hard to come by these days. But keep an eye out for them, you will see one. They typically have the Virgo Alloy rims.

Why are cars not made this safe, attractive, solid, easy and convenient anymore> why are new cars weak garbage?
classickc 2 years ago 23
Good question... why did Volvo stop making them? Was it the Ford takeover or something?
