People can squint. I've done versions without duct tape and blindfolds; using my hands to cover my eyes, closing my eyes, turning around, etc. It just doesn't seem to work for me as well personally.
As far as "convincing" that's a term that is left up to each individual audience member, and each performer.
@dewzs Sometimes I do have them put the coins and tape on. I am sure I have several versions where an audience member applies the tape; I'll see if I can find it.

It's better to have the members of the group put everything on. Gets them to handle everything for verification.
