  • @steerpikey I agree, that's so strange

  • I was fortunate to see Numan on this tour in Cleveland, OH. Nash the Slash opened for him. It was a very memorable show to say the least!

  • There's something about the last lyrics "All I know is no one dies. I'm still confusing love with need...." I simply love it...

  • Best Numan song and there are plenty to choose from.

  • It is so ironic how this kind of music is dismissed and insulted by today's music fans, yet much of today's "music" is computer generated/aided, and many of today's stars, without technological assistance, would be revealed as horrible singers.

  • @66gamera So very true!! If it was'nt for Auto Tune, Justin Beiber, Miley Cyrus, Britanny Spears et all wouldn't have music careers.

Today's pop music fans are spoon fed, no-shovel fed, shit and they think it's candy. LOL!!!!

  • @Lalo3001 Time stands still for no one. I don't disagree with your STRONG assessment; however I recall in when when purchasing this album in 1980, it was ALSO dismissed as lacking merit by music purist like yourself at the time.

  • @66gamera actually there is a young fan base still for numan. i just saw him last oct. in denver. i was quite surprised to find kids under 20 there. most in college. but they weren't falling for brittney spears ect. they new an icon when they saw it. there is still hope LOL. and your right about alot of todays pop stars they would be revealed as horrible singers. they should thank god for pich correction or they would have no career. lol.

  • Gary is my favorite robot!

  • The song is about a robot wanting to be human. Numan = Genius...

  • Einfach nur geil. I am an american....... *lol*

  • I could learn to be a man...like you....

  • We're in the building where they make us grow, and I'm frightened by the liquid engineers.....like you.

  • has anyone got midfy from this show ?

  • The way the guy is jumping around with the electronic drums on the bottom right reminds me of Arthur Brown performing Fire. I'll take you to burn....

  • @jrmetmoi That would be Rrussell Bell that you are talking about there, great all round guitarist

  • Inever understood why he attracted so much negativity in the 80s

  • Just saw the Oct 17 show in Orlando-it was outstanding & he also has a new DVD out of a recent London show.

  • @4tuneagent i just saw him two nights ago in Portland - he was incredible!! I've liked him since i was a kid, but now i'm a born again Numanite!

  • @Zorsha NUMANITE......That's Awesome!!!

  • Oct. 18-Atlanta!

  • I am going to see him in concert Nov, 2010, can't wait.

  • @theonlywinner....where is he playing at?

  • @robert9400 in Los Angeles, a place called the El Rey Theater. Nov. 3 and 4.

  • @theonlywinner... enjoy!!

  • it's the first time i have watched this and it was sooo good!!

  • They just don't perform like this any more, do they? Concerts have no style, no fashion (ok, GaGa does, if you like her). Muse is the only band that comes close any more.

  • I was 18 when I saw this exact show live in 1979 @ Loyola (now Concordia) campus in Montreal. He's STILL cool :)

  • Sublime.

  • It makes me happy that Gary did not melted in the Main Stream like the rest........

  • I listen to the pleasure principle everyday

  • This man deserves credit the music industry will never give him. What higher accolade could such a proven innovator wish for? The BEST is always to be found not touted at you. :)

  • i just got the pleasure principle and i have never heard anything like this before it has such a unique sound the keyboards are eerie, haunting and hypnotic it sends chills up my spine.Very trippy love it!!!

  • @69drown his synths are actually plugged into guitar pedals, or somthing similar, from memory that is.

  • @69drown Yes dear. Its fab

  • @69drown a few of his songs give me the chills too......that when you know it's good music

  • @skylerfeathersworth thATS WHY I BECAME A MUSICIAN ,,I WANTED TO GIVE PEOPLE THE CHILLS,,SO THEY COULD FEEL WHAT I FEEL

  • Vince Noir's hero. Quite an amazing musician himself.

  • This is an inventor . Not (like so many of the mainstream artists) a replica.

  • great persona, great abstract performances...he really carved a route through the music scene with this brand of sound...makes todays "original" stuff look like kids nursery ryhmes.

  • totally agree! I discovered Gary's music with the BBC documentary "Synth Britannia" and I have been hooked since then. Cant wait to see him live

  • FUCK you!!!

    And Fuck NIN too

  • ???? have respect, Gary Numan has been a major inspiration to trent treznor, he said it himself.

  • Grow up, this is musical history you are watching here, why do you think NIN covered it?

  • its brilliant, cus hes a popstar, right, but hes got a pilots liscence!!

  • @ozymandiasride LOVE THE BOOSH :D

i guess you can kinda tell by my name :L

  • numan kicks ass he is one in a million and is a great influence

  • sehr gut!!!!

  • Only music from the past can sound futuristic.

  • The future is nothing more than the past perception of the present, and therfore it is never really real.

  • @Steerpikey I totally agree with that comment. Also, this is a great track. Utterly futuristic and moody. Should use it in a good modern sci-fi.

  • @Steerpikey I think it was the endless enthusiasm for the future that created stuff like this. We were economically strong in the U.S. and it seemed like we were tops.

  • @uhltron Gary Numan is from England, as his accent makes obvious.

  • @robdowling123 No duh , i was speaking of the music that was popular at the time and why it was popular in the u.s. due to our position in the 80's . It was the general vibe of the 80's.Speed reading is not ure strength. Unwarranted arrogance.

  • @uhltron No your arrogance glossed over that Gary Numan is English.

  • @Steerpikey these days, I ted to agree with you...

  • can wait 20 days to a go see Gary Numan

omg it going to be sick

  • i remember it like it was yesterday. in my grandparents house kneelin on the faded grey carpet, playing this over and over again. getting yelled at for playing it to loud. wiping the fuzz off the needle.

    wow

  • There's an vinyl record of this concert?

  • oh no no. just talking about the studio album. sorry. i was misleading.

  • Comment removed

  • Living Ornaments '79. As close as you'll get.

  • Yes,there is. "living ornaments'79" Recorded at Hammersmith Odeon in 1979,relased in 1981.9 tracks on 1 vinyl:airplane, cars,we are so fragile, films, something in the house,my shadow in vain, conversation, the dream police, metal.

  • Awesome, thanks a lot. It'll be a pain to find, haha.

  • Class 30 years on!

  • ...he looks like a nosferatu from the future!!!! Amazing!!

  • Reminds me of when I used to walk around Wood Green, Black trousers, black shirt, black tie, black hair (I bottled it on the black fingernails) - still today I could Pass for a Green Day fan :o)

  • I still walk around like that sometimes. Green Day is piss and shit compared to this.

  • @darbonne1979 thats funny you say that because first time I saw the singer I thought he looked and sounded like billy joel from green day

  • @darbonne1979 thank you for stating the obvious superiority. It's a constant battle between me and the rest of the youth. No modern punks can capture the pathos and paranoia that is Numan's own style.

  • This is so good, he and Suicide were so ahead of times. And the lyrics are just off the hook. I also love the remix version by Afrika Bambaataa.

  • He is my Inspiration

  • Gary, simply blew me awy when he first came on the scene. I had alway's loved synthesizers, since a child but, Gary was the one, who started me playing the synthesizer, and I was hooked from then on, people used to call me Gary after that.. Now, i'm completly obssesed with synths, and Gary's music. I have a lot to thank him for. To fans of great music like this, Gary will alway's be in our hearts. Thanks so much for posting. A Numanoid forever. LOL .

  • i had no idea this was a gary numan song! used to NIN version. very good!

  • the thing i find so cool about numan was that he was electronic but he still used a live drummer. he's so analog. which is what it was all about. some things can be bettered by technology, they just are.

  • @up2space What I thought Gary used to be a live guitarist?

  • @jrmetmoi He still is when he plays live these days,

  • @tristanrchrd i know, i like how he changes the songs up, sort of updates them with his current sound. they have that 70's/early 80's feel but have his newer dark electronic sound mixed it, sounds haunting!

  • This brings back some great memories.

The early eighties were great. Newman, Devo, KillingJoke. Every kid in America was glued to MTV.

  • Nine Inch Nails did a cover of this song and its pretty bad ass! If you guys like this I'm sure you'll like Trents cover of the song.

This song rocks! Thanks for posting!

  • BAMMMMMMM!!!!!!!

  • R.I.P Paul Gardiner. One of the coolest, most original bass players ever... You were/are one of my heroes...

  • Fab!!!!!

    Coxynuma.66.

  • David Bowie es Dios, pero este es una maravilla

  • Gary Numan is much better then David Bowie could ever hope to be. While both have their own unique sound...I prefer Gary's music over David Bowie's.

  • You can't be serious. Numan is awesome. But Bowie is a pioneer. Listen to Ziggy and The Man Who Sold the World. The music is timeless and still feels fresh today. Numan's stuff sounds "of an era."

  • Sambarre what would you know anyway?

Bowie started off alot of pioneering musical moments.

  • Numan is numan, no more or less, he has his own style and i love it. Bowie is Bowie, Numan is Numan and music is for all of us...........enjoy!!

  • Excellent observation!

I loved Numan more than life itself when I was growing up in the late 1970's, he arrived just as I was getting interested in the music scene and just blew me away - he still does to this day!

At the time of Numan's arrival I hated Bowie, I couldn't comprehend his existence compared to Numan's - however now older and wiser Bowie is as much a God of music to me as Numan always has been!

They are both incredible artists and we should all thank God that they exist!

  • Yes I had that hate thing for Bowie as well especially when he got Numan kicked of the Kenny Everett show at school me and another fan used to take the piss out of Bowie , but then that damn man Bowie has to go and make some cool music and I also started reading his discograhpy and I started to like the guy but Numan is in a class of his own and only a few like Kraftwerk and the early Human League and especially John Foxx can compare

  • I love Bowie, how can anyone hate him!

Anyway each to their own I guess huh?

  • Yeah and parky2310 and me like Bowie now WoodRatGirl :)

  • Lol, I'm a passionate Bowie fan, don't mind me.

  • :)

    WoodRatGirl

  • Bowie didn´t have to say, that Numan were a weak copy of himself. That was damn stupid

  • Yeah but he allowed the press to go on like that and then got Numan Kicked of the Kenny Everet show, still Bowie is human and all humans do stupid thing at times

  • No, me, i never do stupid things! ;D

  • Yeah Yeah Glamypunk :)

  • Yeah! Yeah! Gla-my-punk!

    Yeah! Yeah! Gla-my-punk!

    :DDD

  • lol

  • he has since said very nice things about Gary.

  • I didn't know that, thanks for letting me know.

  • you're welcome. on Numan's site a year or 2 ago he had a Bowie quote/endorsement up for hyping his then current release. one can't overstate the importance of either of these guys. I love Bowie's stuff, but I'd rather play in Gary's band.

  • me, too ;D

  • Scottish Gaelic (Gàidhlig) is pronounced gaːlɪk or in english garlic. The hillarious joke about scots would be best told to an Irish person as their Gaelic is indeed pronounced Gay lick. Crap suas bodalach.ha ha ha ha ha.

  • Rest in peace Paul Gardiner... You are sorely missed but NEVER forgotten... Godspeed my friend...

  • O.K boy share with the world what your amazing taste is then, its a little one sided putting silly comments and not backing them up.By the way its a bit of a shite thing to say that you are glad someones dead just cos you dont like their music (by the way he's very much alive).

  • Talkin about Paul your piece of shit so go fuck yourself you trailor trash

  • WOW phanotm what a cool valid comment.Who are your music idols????.Come on let us all know then mayby we can all join in on your serious debate.By the way, saying you are glad someone is dead because you dont like their music is shite mate no mater who,as well as the fact is that Numan never has been dead,he's very much alive playing (and selling out) the o2 arena in london.

  • Trailer trash????Hagis?????Sheep shagger????Your earlier statement prooves he's a fag?????im a piece of shit and i should go fuck myself????????.I can see the mentality of this debate.I would have been seriously interested in your taste in music but.Oh well im going to eat some haggis, shag my pet sheep and go to my bed in my trailer im wasting my time here, you win.Good night.BAAAAAA.

  • Thank you for admiting that. You know what they call 2 gay scotsmen...?gaelics hahaha

  • What a festering Shitsack you are!

Its very clear that when you were circumcised they clearly threw away the wrong end!

  • I too have been into numan since 79 and got tired of hearing "he thinks he's Bowie" now he's evolved into the industrial scene he seems to be getting a lot of "he thinks he's Trent Reznor" crap.He admits to being a NIN fan and being heavily influenced as indeed Reznor was influenced by Numan and Young Gods(see where Reznor gets his stage presence from). At least the guy is still making shit hot music and not doing 80's revival weekends at butlins doing a half an hour set to a backing tape.

  • I agree with you . At least he still makes great new stuff jagged is briiliant.

  • I have been with Numan since the beginning, and he is DEFINATELY on a Trent Rez trip. Check out his on stage antix and tell me I am wrong ! It is also very unlike Numan to be pidgeon holed, but he has very much nailed his flag to the industrial/techno mast. I prefered him when he had his own hair and on stage personality. Still a leg though.

  • plug me in - turn me on...

  • he's hot

  • I'm sorry but I just prefer the obscure style he had back in the day.

  • Gary Nails. I saw him play nottingham last night and it was like he is trying to be Trent Reznor

  • im afraid its the other way around.

  • I agree. It's like he's imitating the people he's influenced a bit too much these days.

  • i agree .But you gotta understand lots of artist have their creative peak in the beginning of their career.

  • baby leave his scheize alone.Silly feg trying to trick u up. LET THE MUSIC LIVE >WishI had seen them live n Los a. whenI had the chance.

  • Great!!!!!!

    Coxynuma.66.

  • No?

  • dontxdefineme - Mind not. Have you had problems with people trying to define you post-haste?

  • dontxdefineme - I was just wondering what you thought about their portention? Tell me if i'm being nosy :)

  • I like the atmosphere and the scenary. Great profesional and talent musician, Numan.

  • dontxdefinexme - Have you portained them?

  • This has always been and still is my favourite Numan track..Turn it up loud...it rocks!!

  • I really like this "live" performance (I was disappointed to read that it was mimed from a live recording). Is this, or another vintage live version available in stereo? Numan's recent live performances sound muddy compared to this. It's a shame that bass player died, he's fantastic.

  • XD <3 @ guy hitting the synth pads on the Left side of the stage

  • That's RRussell Bell who was/is quite a character, as well as a terrific multi instrumentalist - although you're right to say that in this clip he looks more "mentalist" than anything else.... I believe he's also a good mate of Lily Allen's old man Keith which probably explains a lot.....

  • I didnt even know Numan was still going till I started learning how to use a computer.thank you all for your great vids.he was my true hero.not nostalgia, just fantastic music,a true genius at work

  • I look up to him since he has Aspergers like I do and he makes great music.

  • Thanks for sharing this clip from the "Year of the Child" concert i do have to admit i was there in full Numan dress black hair and eyeliner on and this was just before the New Romantic's were on the rise and i don't care what anyone says but Gary made synth pop acceptable the man is a God, but he does need to release a dvd with all the old vids and gigs such as this to say thanks to the long term fans as myself. BIG LOVE mick

  • who said this was live?? this is exactly like the album perfect

  • Yes, it is. He sings differently, the music is a little different as well.

  • This performance isn't live. Sorry to rain on everyones parade. Great song though!

  • Of course its live..its nothing like the album version...and yes..Its a great song!!

  • Actually this is not a live clip. It was mimed for the "Year Of The Child" TV concert. The clip they are playing to was recorded at the Hammersmith Odeon a couple weeks prior to this being filmed. The Hammersmith Odeon footage of "Metal" does not exist, but you can listen to this verison on Living Ornaments. Read any Numan biography and they will tell you the same.

  • My apologies and am eating my slice of humble pie!!

  • I don't believe what you say don't care if you were there oldcopbullishit I believe what you say and you can tell here it his him singing and not a backing tape I know I am a musician, especially because of Numan

  • I love the NIN version to, but the gary numan version is much better

  • dude that was sensation..!

  • Awesome, period.

  • That'll be Cedric on the drums in the middle. Classic stuff! Man, could Gary pout.

  • AWESOME !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • He was great back in 1979!

  • Metal is one of the best songs on this album. Along with M.E.

  • finding stuff like this is what I like best about You Tube.

  • Is it me or is that not Cedric Sharpley on the drums?

  • It's not. It's Numan's uncle Jess Lidyard. Cedric hold the sticks differently.

  • Jess Lidyard is also white...Cedric isn't.

  • Nine Inch Nails covered this song and made it more modern. But it sounds great in its original state.

  • i like the NIN version much better and i didnt even know it was originally by gary numan until know.

  • that makes you a poser!

  • Get your head out of your arse.

  • Synths and gary at their best, should have been a single.

  • yay! I heard the live version first, the studio one sounded thin by comparison, tho I learned to like that one as well. that snare roll intro is so classic!

  • Great song, should have been released as a single as it is every bit as strong as Cars.

  • Those synth! Those drums! That Bass!!! Wow!

  • GREAT video. Numan slinking around in The Suit, and the guys in the band. Does the memories get any better than this?

  • he's still a pioneer...

  • rock on gary rock on dude your the man

  • Gary was a true Pioneer...

  • What can you say ???? just pure briliance :)
