lol I know this is an old video, but could you recommend any good electronic translators like yours, and are there any books you recommend that could help someone learn the proper kanji and katakana? Or should I just continue learning from my manga's? Thanks
lol I know this is an old video, but could you recommend any good electronic translators like yours, and are there any books you recommend that could help someone learn the proper kanji and katakana? Or should I just continue learning from my manga's? Thanks
Thank you for your wonderful videos. I ran across them accidentally and I watched quite a few of them. These are very informational for a person like me who wishes to learn japanese and travel to japan. Currently I am looking for a job to save money to pay for classes.
I bought two textbooks, genki and japanese for busy people for self study. I play an online social game called ai sp@ce to chat with japanese people when i can. Some are very shy speaking to a foreigner. Some love me.
question: how much of video do u you use in a recording of your life in japan, and Is your video digitaly recorded . How much bits do you use per day.
I am 14 and i think i have plenty of time for learning japanese and saving some money and applying for an exchange programm, i think! i already know hiragana and katakana and basic stuff , so i think so far so good!!! :)
No, im trying to learn now cuz im gunna apply the end of this year. Im using Rossetta stone to learn it and i got all the language packs so im gunna try to complete them all before march 2010, i doubt i will tho. Its like tom said he only started to learn japanese 9 months before he left, after he go accepted.
Ah! Your Visa ends March of 09?!?!? That's like, NOW. Does that mean the videos will...end?Are you going to get a new visa, or like you said at one point.....stay illegally?!
i really dont care if your sick of hearing it or not! im honestly jealous of you because your out there seeing a different part of the world and stuff. and to someone like me who has lived in a small town all his life (who by the way can't get into an exchange program because of where i live and what school i go to *sad face* haha) that is pretty amazing. i know you said you dont plan on staying there past your visa but any chance of you getting that renewed?
so if you want to go out to akihabara or something do you need permission from your host family? im already in tenth so i figure its much too late to save up or maybe its the perfect time. whan did you start exactly? i really like to know what you think, thank you so much for all your videos and i hope you have loads of fun wile you are still in japan
in the netherlands they dont really have options on exchange programs which im allowed on in my situation but if you go to the ambasede and stuf or through university it can work
a grade point average of 3.0 or 2.75 and they may make an exception....I have one program plan for March, but my parents will not let me:( what do I do, Tom?????????! I needed a year in the language!
You're wonderful, Tom! I hope you'll have a Merry Christmas! I have a request, though: Make a video about your Christmas in Japan! I'd love to know what that's like.
I have a question! What about England? Here, we have secondary school instead and we finish at the age of 16..not 18, so going to high school is a different matter. I know they often ask for report cards and a letter from the headmaster...but I'm not in school, so there are none. XD
I'm learning Japanese right now, (self study as I have wierd parents who don't want me to join classes that interfere with school blah blah blah). I've got enough money and am scouting around for Japan trips but I there's no point if I can't get by language-wise SO: How good were you at Japanese when you went in terms of literacy/tenses/grammar etc?
Sorry to bother you! Hope you're having fun. :) Kayti
No hate coming from me, I'm very thankful for your vids Tom, nice job by the way on this vid. A lot of questions I was wandering about are now answered. Thanks!
haha thnks for the vids this video is very down to earth. i mean ur right, its NOT luck lol it does take alot of determination so im happy that you arent like others who only boast bout how fun japan is and all this and that. you actually say the truth :D
hey, work out if you do wanna do jap lessons or not and ill get you a free lesson...even if you are not sure, ill get you a free one anyway so you can check it out. Also, do you or tobi know when he's getting back? Last i heard its january right??
yeah i was going to apply for the program you used. it's a great program, but my parents dont want me to go so i cant. but yeah i think i'm going to take classes, then at least i will actually HAVE to work on it, because i get lazy and bored so i move on and come back to it too late, so if i take classes i think i would learn faster than doing what i've been doing lately. (watching anime and reading manga like you said)
so in this university course I'm applying for it says there is a " Year abroad " ... do you know if this will be the same type of thing you're doing or is it with a group?

visitor visas everyone can take it....it's tourist visa....90 days...everyone coming to japan has visitor visa...can't stay in japan longer than 90 days and can't working.
Tom you are very fortunate (read:lucky XD). I am doing what you suggested, I'm applying for the JET program (^^) A few times I've had doubts but then I was like,"Heck yeah! Let's go for it!" :D Wish me luck and thanks for the videos!
Tom make no mistake, i certainly enjoy your videos, i relize your busy with your life, keepup the good work, i see whatever you dish, its been a blast!!
I'm still going to say you're lucky...because you live (well lived) in Australia, where it's very close to Japan. And there are Japan exchange programs.

one question, can you still go if you have flunked a grade in high school? or do different rules apply according to the exchange program?

You must [generally] have an average grade of a C to be eligible for exchange. But.. most programs are pretty loose when it comes to technicalities.
