  • A 97-03 GTP coupe is 3450-3500 and a Gen 2 (92-95) Automatic SHO is also 3450-3500. Manual gen2 SHOs are 100-150 lbs lighter....

  • And even though a 96-99 SHO was way slower than a 92-95 SHO i stall can not see a 235hp car not beating a 160hp car of somewhat similar weight.

    GTP vs gen 2 SHO race would go like this:

    1/8 mile GTP is out in front

    1/4 mile SHO has almost caught up or has caught up

    3/8 mile SHO out in front

    1/2 mile the GTP is just a tiny spec in the SHO rear-view mirror

    the SHO is a better track car cuz it has a very flat torque and a long power bandat high rpms. GTP better drag with 280ft-lbs@3600rpm

  • first of all a the stopped make the real SHO in 95, so those "SHOs" you raced that were a '97 and '96 were nothing like this car.

    The supercharged 3800 wasn't in the GTP was actually designed to compete with the SHO cuz the NA 3800 couldn't hold it's own against it. And the GTP with this SC 3800 wasn't made untill 1997 and they stopped making the true SHO in 1995.

    The Yamaha 24v DOHC 3.0L V6 in the SHO and the SC 3.8L V6 couldn't be more different; GTP pure low end, SHO pure top end.

  • @tc220485 Can't agree with you more. I've had both a '91 SHO and a 99 GTP. My GTP would eat my SHO up until about 100, but the SHO would pull ahead. I also have far steeper gears in my GTP. I can take a corvette in the quarter, but it will still outrun me.

  • I raced a 1996 SHO with a 2000 pontiac GP SE version we were neck to neck. Im not understanding why he beat you so bad. The guy I raced even had a cold air and an performance exaughst. I think it's just OE.

  • @bigbubba357m the reason why u were so close is cuz the 96 SHOs are way slower then the 89-95 SHO. Ford pretty much messed up a good thing there when they switched around the motor setup and made them all autos.

  • Im very interested in this race. It seems like these 2 cars were at the top of the food chain in the FWD 90's family sedan straight line power class. With the fastest available SHO of those years stock going up against the fastest Grand Prix GT of those years, who would come out on top?

  • Grand Prix GT isn't a match for a SHO in any way shape or forum, GTP's and SHO's were competiton. I mean look, this SHO launched horribly and look how fast he walks past the GT.

  • Wait, the Gran Prix GT isn't the GTP? Then I meant the GTP if so.. Stock numbers show the GTP is a little faster.

  • GTP is a better launching car, SHO's have bad traction issues. I've had 4 SHO's and I still have 2 of those, I also have a 99 Grand Prix GTX (its modded a lot though). On the freeway stock for stock, a SHO will still walk a GTP, 3800's don't have much up top.

    the gtp (giving its higher torque rating) would be quicker out of a dig, but SHO would catch up and roll on it in the higher rpm ranges

  • @CrashBandikoot7 Lighter weight and the 5spd. The grand prix is almost 1000lbs heavier than the taurus too.

  • @MrMercLover Yeah, I wasn't really interested in the Grand Prix anymore, because I learned that it's not the GTP. My original question should have been GTP vs SHO. Another good competitor against the SHO is the 92' Maxima 5spd with the chain driven DOHC motor(VE30DE). I use to own it, and the newer Maxima's had trouble with me on the highway. Even my friends 06' BMW 330i could not pass me up top.

    Uhhh???

    The gen 3 was actually the slowest SHO, given its heavy weight and auto-only transmission (which was geared for comfort and cruise, rather then speed)

    If you're referring to the new 2010 SHO, yes, it would murder a gen 1, pretty much because it has 2 t15 turbos which help the engine put out, what, 365 hp

    In reference to the 3 PREVIOUS generations, which I was referring to in the first place, I still stand by my comment that the gen 1 will always be the #1

  • @MrMercLover Actually if you want to get technical, the Ecoboost SHO is a Gen IV. They made some changes from 92-93 in the body, as well as the performance. The Ecoboost SHO is also, well... boosted lol. Take those turbos out of the picture and the Gen I will still be the fastest.

  • great points for sure about ATX's and MTX's and weight and stuff. The sticks are definitely funner and a little quicker to 60 that an auto, but as an owner of a 94 auto with a mild tranny touch-up (shift kit, 2800 stall tq converter) and a 92 mtx (216k miles!) I would say they are the same machines when you put the pedal down haha. especially to 100 and beyond.

  • I assume the SHO was a auto since the driver was holding a camera! So a MTX is much faster and if it was a gen1( it isnt) it would have been faster as well due to another 150 lbs less.
