Meh. Distillation is not difficult, nor is it particularly dangerous these days. If you are halfway competent you can produce fantastic distilled beverages yourself. The real reason for it being illegal in the U.S. is, as AB pointed out, money. Specifically, the ridiculously large amount of money that you give directly to Uncle Sam when you buy a bottle.
