All we know about Lomu is those same videos we see all the time. We all know of his exceptional qualities, but he wasn't perfect. He needed space to take off. That's why the other teams tried to be on him as soon as he got the ball, they knew that as soon as he took a little momentum he was very hard to stop. Also he was a big tackler, few people know that. However, a guy I met who played with him told me his major weakness was defense. A guy like Robinson could sidestep him in a phonebooth.

This is the thing as he gets older he will lose his pace he needs to round himself out more.

Scoring more tries, doesn't make Williams better after all, anyone can score from 5 metres out, but even when lomu didn't score he would almost always be involved in the move that led to a try being scored, whereas williams whose a great player, does'nt perform under pressure.

For Pure metal though he was hard to stop it just depended on what strategy you used or wanted to play with him. I still rate Jeff Wilson and Campese very very highly and same with Gerald Williams. Joe Roff was great and so has been Joe Rokococo and Habana. But for all round ability I think Wilson is pretty hard to beat. Jonah actually said so in his bio!!!
I would go along with that. For all round ability I would probably have to go with Wilson as the greatest All Black winger. Kirwan was pretty good too, but I don't think he had the same kicking game as Wilson. This is why I'll never forgive John Hart for playing Wilson at fullback and Cullen at centre/wing in the World Cup. Cullen was our best fullback (he'd never played much at top level at wing/centre and Wilson was our best winger -- why the hell swap them around. Sorry about the rant.
I agree with you about Harts selections however Wilson and Cullen didnt help the cause by filling in extremely well in these positions during NPC and Super 12 games. Wilson was one of the worlds great players and the aussies (bob dwyer) rated him highly. I know Goldie used to cane Cullen over 100 mtrs (thats a fact cos my mates at massey used to officially time them) However Cullen had a better start over the 1st ten mtrs and was a slightly quicker stepper off both feet which is all you need.

O ' Driscol is far superior to Robinson. O'Driscol tackles like a flanker and runs with the speed and step of a winger. He is also a very intelligent player with great vision and tremendous bravery.. Robinson was a quick runner but that was about it. In fact, he is a very overrated player with only Henson of Wales being more overrated.

On the other hand, Lomu at full speed could fend off five guys like Robinson with the back of his hand, and his sidestep is impressive too, for a guy of that size. They were just two complete opposite type of players. The only thing they had in common was their speed and the position they played. Of course, Lomu is also a legend. All we know about Lomu is those same videos we see all the time. We all know of his exceptional qualities, but he wasn't perfect. He needed space to take off. That's why the other teams tried to be on him as soon as he got the ball, they knew that as soon as he took a little momentum he was very hard to stop. Also he was a big tackler, few people know that. However, a guy I met who played with him told me his major weakness was defense. A guy like Robinson could sidestep him in a phonebooth.

are you joking lomu doesnt need momentum, i was watching a game with him, he was running down the side line and he fully slowed right down to a stop, fended a guy off sending him flying a meter in the air, bumped off another from his first step and then passed the ball for a try. Robinson wouldnt be able to get passed him, lomu's too big and quick he could grab him with one arm and lift him in the air if he wanted..

I didn't say he needs momentum. I said when he gets momentum, he's very hard to stop, as in almost impossible. I'm not inventing this. It was recognized by everyone: players, coaches, commentators and so on. And it's simple physics (mass X speed = power). By the way, in your example, he did not score the try himself. Had to pass the ball.

Yeah I agree, Habana has got pace but so have others. Wingers like Habana however need forwards and centers gaining the advantage line at tackle time to be successful. Thats not to say a good break away is never possible but sadly Habana is not an exceptionally good rugby player hes far to vulnerable in defence and his passing, Defensive and kicking game are seriously lacking. This is the thing as he gets older he will lose his pace he needs to round himself out more.

Scoring more tries, doesn't make Williams better after all, anyone can score from 5 metres out, but even when lomu didn't score he would almost always be involved in the move that led to a try being scored, whereas williams whose a great player, does'nt perform under pressure.

Lol gotta be careful when you say that. He was the greatest big attacking winger in the game but his alround game was lacking seriously. For Pure metal though he was hard to stop it just depended on what strategy you used or wanted to play with him. I still rate Jeff Wilson and Campese very very highly and same with Gerald Williams. Joe Roff was great and so has been Joe Rokococo and Habana. But for all round ability I think Wilson is pretty hard to beat. Jonah actually said so in his bio!!!

I would go along with that. For all round ability I would probably have to go with Wilson as the greatest All Black winger. Kirwan was pretty good too, but I don't think he had the same kicking game as Wilson. This is why I'll never forgive John Hart for playing Wilson at fullback and Cullen at centre/wing in the World Cup. Cullen was our best fullback (he'd never played much at top level at wing/centre and Wilson was our best winger -- why the hell swap them around. Sorry about the rant.

I agree with you about Harts selections however Wilson and Cullen didnt help the cause by filling in extremely well in these positions during NPC and Super 12 games. Wilson was one of the worlds great players and the aussies (bob dwyer) rated him highly. I know Goldie used to cane Cullen over 100 mtrs (thats a fact cos my mates at massey used to officially time them) However Cullen had a better start over the 1st ten mtrs and was a slightly quicker stepper off both feet which is all you need.

O ' Driscol is far superior to Robinson. O'Driscol tackles like a flanker and runs with the speed and step of a winger. He is also a very intelligent player with great vision and tremendous bravery.. Robinson was a quick runner but that was about it. In fact, he is a very overrated player with only Henson of Wales being more overrated.
Just an opinion but if ya asked most people, they'd agree.

I would disagree there, when exactly has O' Driscoll lost it for a big game? He has had to play quite a defensive game for the last couple of years compared with when he started out, hasn't had as much time to shine with the ball in hand.
I don't think good players play differently in different competitions either.
