@franztenor Often times, those that are the furthest away from really understanding any new, innovative vocal technique ideas and are VERY quick to be judgmental because they don't understand it and actually, harbor fear about it. But listen, its not wrong. The things I am teaching are just contemporary and you can do both. He is also just referring to the distorted scream. At TVS we train more than just that. He would like to believe its just about screaming, but its not. TVS is legitimate.
I showed your "falsetto is NOT head voice" to a guy who is undoubtedly a lover of opera (read that: A snob) He thinks you're just screaming, and that "real" singing is when you do a chest-sounding high C, like Pavarotti does. Could one get that very operatic sound from this sort of training? Or rather, if I trained with this, would I then have the ability to switch between a more neutral sound and a heavy covered sound?
@AtariMaxiToriyama To claim this is just "screaming" is completely ridiculous. Does it sound like "just screaming" to you? Really? Does it sound like Screaming?... or does it actually sound like a refined, trained vocal sound someone worked on with control and merit? Ill let you decide. This sound IS the sound that theater and Classical singers are making. Its mostly about laryngeal configuration, vowel modification and the amount of pharyngeal resonance you CHOOSE to use. Its a choice. Yes.
@AtariMaxiToriyama ... this makes me a little angry... typical response from some Classical "snob" that actually is just jealous and bitter because honestly, he probably can't do it. I have dealt with this my entire career. Some old school singers and teachers feel threatened by it because it rubs against what they were always told and they hate to see another voice coach innovate and come up with new ideas...
@AtariMaxiToriyama I have always been a preferred target. Other voice teachers either understand and respect me and my work, or they fall into another category. Jealous, confused and feel threatened. They say, you must be over the target, if your catching flak. My career experience with my colleagues in the business is perfectly described by this statement. I will say however, there are other Classical types that DO appreciate my work, most so. Some cant get past themselves.
@AtariMaxiToriyama BTW... this video above... this is old stuff... I leave it up because its now kinda nostalgic and fun... but I would agree... there are a few scenes where I am kinda "screaming"... but that was the point, thats what I was trying to do. If you review my latest tutorials and performances on "Pillars 2.0", your friend will see a teacher and voice that has evolved.
@roblunte Hey, don't back down. I don't think you were ever "screaming". The reason I asked the question is because I, myself, am feeling a bit insecure. I saw you on a different video doing a siren, and your voice stayed fairly neutral a LONG ways, and only started getting high pitched on the last two or three notes at the top of your range. My voice gets high-pitched near the A4 mark. I'm sure that I simply need to keep training and strengthening my voice, though. But. . . .
@roblunte What I REALLY want to do is combine regular singing with the covering of operatic singers like Luciano Pavarotti. Thus, keep a deep sound while singing very high. But if it were really possible, wouldn't people be doing it already? Or perhaps it is very subtle? Or maybe I don't know what I'm talking about? : )
I wish I had the money to go to Seattle right now. I'm in Sacramento, CA and I want nothing more outta life than to be the lead vocalist of an Art/Prog band (along the lines of Dredg), but in full voice, I have a little more than 1 (or 1 1/2 on a good day) octive in my vocal range. It's really tough 'cause I don't get a lot of encouragement from either friends, family or other musicians. I do know that once I get enough $, I'm definately going up to Seattle to train there as much as possible.
Give me a call... we can work on a 6-8 hour weekend intensive in our studio. You just come from Friday-Sunday evening. The good thing is there is a Hostel that only charges $35/hr a night with free dinner, breakfast and wifi. They work with me to provide good deals. Give me a call to discuss details.
I checked out your website and have a question. Do you ship hard copies of your training material or do you offer only downloadable electronic copies? Thanks.
I really dig your vids. I am trying for the first time in my life as a singer to work on my head voice. I can cover some Chris Cornell vocals, but some climax vocals of his whip my ass. I have just touched on this false chamber throat stuff, and can be painful. I want to be better. I have my music on youtube, click my name, tell me what you think I could benifit from. Please help!
Just a modest question: Do your technique applies for those (like me) who are looking for "operatic" sounds? I mean Bel Canto colour of voce, not rock-like screams (nothing against that!) but I´m talking about warm round sounds like Roy Orbison singin the end of Walk On (someone uploaded that to youtube) Thanks!
Yes of course! I often have to tell people, we are not training styles at TVS, we are training techniques that can be applied to all styles... the low register development we focus on applies well to the Operatic vocal mode. And of course issues such as respiration, vowel shaping, vibrato, etc... all apply. I would love to work with you... try our $50 electronic downloads package. It has our warm ups on it and some things that will immediately benefit you.
Is the $50 package no longer available? I'm thinking about getting the electronic copy of the 4 pillars of singing. From the forum, it sounds like TVS will help me get the results that I've been looking for. If I can afford it, I might go for some skype lessons near the end of the year, too. Oh and are the tutorials in black and white?
Are all the guys singing in this video tenors? To scream like that do u need to be a tenor or can a baritone reach those notes with proper training and technique?
You can learn to sing like this regardless of your voice type. I am a Classical Barritone, but the techniques allow me to sing tenor ranges as do our vocalists. Dont worry about "tenor", "baritone"... it can really mess you up... Dont EVER let any voice teacher or other singer lead you to believe that you cant sing high notes because your a baritone... this is a farse! What you have to do is train & develop your head voice and the TVS techniques do that for you. Give it a try.
thank you very much for your quick answers and good advices, ill check if i give a try to your book/dvd. Oh and by the way age does affect your voice range also right because im 17 and i have heard of some people that say that when you get older your range increases, is that true??
This is interesting I teach my students to use thier mix register by doen sirens and mexican grittos on a scale and they look at me crazy like I am making it up. I will refer them to your website to show them I am not crazy. Most of them think the mix register can only be done softly. It takes practice and work. I love this video. Thank you for posting.
No, in fact, head tones can be approached very aggressively with the proper techniques. You have to train "twang", contractions of the Aryepiglottic Sphincter and tilt the thyroid cartiledge...it can feel aggressive, but its perfectly safe. And it sounds amazing.
godbless you and your teaching..im yuzni from philippines...im a singer in hard rock cafe,,your video really thrills me...sir is there any chance that i can hit the hi note like that coz im a baritone singer and my voice sometimes squeeze if i intend to hit high notes...i purchase eric voice lesson...it helps me to have basics..but i really like your teaching...how can i purchase your video.???
godbless you for helping singers both pro and non pro...
do you agree with belting heavly? A lot of my favorite singers tend to use this tech. to carry long high notes. But i guess i use to much falseto when i do it and it sounds bad. Hints?
You cant belt and sing falsetto at the same time... belting is a chest voice vocal mode...usually the top of your chest voice. Falsetto takes place in the head voice.
That is Dan Hagan from Iris I. myspace dot com / irisimusic and the band this tune comes from is called, "Seed". myspace dot com / seedsow ... the tune is called, "What I Want". Ya, this tune is killer! Dan is one of our "Screaming Pillars" and one of the top musicians in Seattle.
You can purchase the training system at thevocaliststudio dot com / purchasetraining.
i fuckin really liked that video except all the scales people where doing they were fucking annoying........i have nothin against scales but those were annoying haha,,,,,,,,anyway, the singers were fuckin animal!!!!!
What exactly do you mean when you use the term "torque it"? I've heard that word pop up a few times while watching your other videos, and I'm curious to know what means.
Im usually referring to a contraction of the aryepiglottic sphincter to create a "twang" in the sound... to eliminate falsetto in the head voice... more on this on the upcoming 2nd edition of "The Four Pillars".
hi sir..im paul..im from the Philippines..I'm in a rock band i think your the one who can help me...can you give me some tips? on how can i reach some hi-notes?please i really need the high notes..because some of our songs are really high like the songs of vanhalen,mr. big, iron maiden, and other old shcool rock..please. i hope you could give me some tips...i really appreciate it if you will help me.thank you for your time.
Paul, thats my job, is to help singers like you figure this stuff out, especially singing high. But I cant help you on youtube messaging. Everybody on this video is concentrating too much on how to use their voice powerfully and technically at their best, maybe.
But what about the quality of the songs?
One day I would like to open a singing studio based just on Beatles songs. That could be the best way of learning singing. Cause singing is based on good melodies... Or not? :D
Wait a minute... your telling me that a studio for training singers should second guess thier efforts to sing powerful and technical...and that one day your going to open a voice studio where people sing Beatles songs (cover tunes) and thats the best way to train a voice, because its all based on melody alone... with all do respect... Melody is certainly important, but it has little to do with voice training. Thanks for your input, but... "NEXT"!
huh? Your in Portland, OR? Give me a break... you can jump on Amtrack for $30 (first class) and walk to the studio from the Seattle train station. Come in for Friday & Saturday, we will train for four hours/sessions. And you can purchase the electronic downloads/tutorials on the web site.
Thanks... common for training and working out with these techniques. We are big on bridging the passagio and head voice development as you can see... hope to work with you one day.
Well, its kinda a new term that is being thrown around to describe a stance or upper torso stabilizing when your singing aggressively... achoring is required to support high velocity singing... this looks different then chest pulling which makes the neck veins pop out and turns the face red... anchoring, just looks like pulling a rope...
The topic of discussion here is the difference between what we call "anchoring" and real chest pulling tension... sometimes singers that sing high velocity styles, such as rock... have to "anchor" to help support the energy they need to sing like this... but its not to be confused with the tension and constriction you find when you pull chest... these singers would not be able to do what they do if they pull chest... but anchoring does enable great power... I hope this helps.
what's anchoring? I seem to run out of breath VERY quickly, is it something that helps your breathing? Just a quick description would be amazing, I'm sorry but I know your gonna say to go to the web site, lol but i don't have money. So any sort of even half assed brief explanation would be nice.
Anchoring is when the singer uses the torso to "brace" or help support high velocity singing. Like the sensation you get when you pull a rope in "tug-o-war". Before you scream a really high note, you anchor to support the torso.
This is from a band I used to be in called, "Thin Black Line". You can purchase an EP of the music at my web site... four songs from that band. Its only $8... thanks for the feedback.
