Ah the dark ages of synthesizers. Then the Roland JD-800 came in 1991 and things started to look up again. In 1994 Nord released the Nordlead and things haven't been the same since.
Does anyone know the sound preset to the What Is Love song by Haddaway? Not the melody, but the sound preset that was used in the song? I can't find it as I'm scrolling through the presets on my keyboard.
i'm shure the "universe" and the "16" piano" sounds were the sales arguments for that incredible synth. for me "universe" is the most beautiful, artificial padsound i ever heard.
I still use this KeyBoard's special voxes, oohs, ahhs, and strings for all my music. I've tried them all from Yamaha's, Rolands, to the latest Korg Keys and none of the newer keyboards seem to have the simplicity in the simpler sounds that this one had. M1 really had good quality samples.

Talk about iconic. It's amazing when you realize just how many soundtracks for movies and TV shows were created with M1s. I think I've heard nearly every one of these presets from various different places before.
Any M1 owners tried the software version, I'm curious as to how the software sounds in comparisson with the real thing, I would guess as with most if not all hardware the M1 has a bigger better more 3d type sound than the software....? :p
THe M1 is an amazing additional keyboard- (this is a synth not a piano-people don't seemed to get that when reviewing synth piano - it's a uniuqe sound ) that being said the m1 stand alone and unique for choir, strings, ambeint, and new age piano. It is not a synthy board though - new, wave, techno, etc. Not for Human League, Depeche Mode, or if you want those Oberheim sounds - pair it with a D50 or Ani1x or Virus and you can create anything. But I have yet to find those Korg choir sounds.
high william ive just bought an m1 with very little home use i have no experience of synths how easy is it to put tracks down by qauntisize i cant suss it can you help
I'm not a perfectionardo, It dsosent matter to me that much, if it has no sliders and controis. what matters, is it sounds great. It would be great if, it had more sliders buttons ect though. Look at the Juno G, a much over hyped, terrible synth, has controls galore, but i9n my opinion, one of the worst synths ever. At the end of the day, it's the sounds that matter. LOL .
Anyone who says this is not a viable workstation is dillusional. Do knoow how many hit records were produced with this? It's a little dated that's all, but timeless in my opinion :)

It's a really sad excuse for synth or "work station". It has like 10 buttons, and no knobs. The mikrokorg has 15 buttons and 9 knobs, which is superior
@williamenroh No matter what they say, this a superb machine. Buttons and knobs does not make the synth good or bad..It the SOUND that matter!!! And this has a very rich and professional sound. Great Demo btw.
@bilbring i have the microkorg XL and the Korg M1, the M1 is superior for many activities and it was revolutionary at the time it was released it's synthesizer leads arent up to much in general from my experience which microkorg is better for but thats why having multiple keyboards are good, each one has strengths and weaknesses. if i'm needing a lead i go to my Moog LP stage II, some things the micro and some things the M1, works pretty nicely

It's a synthesizer - it just uses sample-based synthesis rather than analog subtractive. It's not like the samples are static; they are modified by dozens of parameters.
I consider the JV-1080 a synth. Do you only use synthesizers like the JV-1080 as a preset playback box? In that case, it's just a sample bank for you.
But the JV-1080 can do really original complex and evolving sounds thanks to its multiple filter types, ring modulation, and generous LFOs and Envelopes. I've created sounds on a sample+synthesis based synthesizer that I could never do on an analog subtractive synth.
Of course, for analog sounds, an analog synth sounds best.

@MARANTZamp Dude, Synth just simply means FX, modulation, & artificially generate sounds so at the end of the day every ROMpler and Analog synth all fall into the same category. They're all synths. The only thing that would make them jsut a ROmpler would be that they only PURELY playback ROM with no mixing, modulation, or FX features at all like a EP would be. Hope you get the idea.
Dude its a classic...Just like the Yamaha DX7...you will always see one of these in a hardcore keyboardists rack of keys...I have one :) and about 7 others...But my main controller is a M-Audio Keystation 88 Pro..I use it to run VSTi's but I still use my other synthesizers as well...But yeah...a total classic.

You can get all the M1 sounds (except the voices on part two of my video) plus more from the Korg Digital Edition which includes a virtual M1 and a Wavestation.
It was first previewed at the 1988 NAMM Show, but it really wasn't available in any significant numbers until 1989. To me, there's a difference between a preview/showing date and a viable commercial release date.
The M1 can already be heard on records from 1988.
I know for sure I played the M1 in a store here in Holland in 1988, when I bought my first synth there, the Roland Jupiter-6. I wanted the M1, but it was 4-times the price of the JP6, that's why I bought the JP6. A few years later the JP6 was 4-times the price of an M1.
Do you know where i can get a korg m1 basic tutorial dvd of some sort. If anybody knows please post link. I just bought one and would like to pick it up quickly.
@CRX602 Don't panic it's quite easy to change the battery on the M1, I did mine recently, just google "korg m1 change battery" although if your not confident in opening up your M1, then I would take it to a music shop, I'm sure it won't be too expensive.
i just got an used korg m1 and it says internal low battery and i cant find the sounds like the pianos and all that stuf.i cant even see the name of the sounds. please help!!!
I'm sorry if you get upset about those kind of specific details.

That's strange, but I really like the piano sound of the M1. It's not realistic, but quite poetic. And please not in those cheesy house tunes. The band Roxette used it on their song "Fading like a flower" and I really like how it sounds.
Plus one - very nice. I remember when it was released, I considered buying one for its potential future value but couldn't really afford it just for that, If memory serves I believe they only made 1000 units. Eventually I got a standard m1, which only gets used for midi input to sequencer and, perversly, that includes using it to play a legacy M1 plugin!
I'm hoping to buy the M1 sounds on disc to play using Reason 3. I've seen some available on Ebay. I've only got a crappy Casio CTK-671 which isnt in the same league as the M1 but I'm a skint single parent !
I messed about with the Korg legacy package for a while.... I did some tests, I couldn't tell the difference between that and the real thing. It's an amazing piece of software.
I too was thinking the M1 isn't a synthesizer but since it boasts 'AI Synthesis' I guess it is after all. Don't see the point in this vid though - you could have just played the in-built demo which is what was played to me in that shop back in 1989 - I left the shop dazed, confused, £1200 lighter in my pocket and had an M1 under my arm and a silly grin on my face. I've had 3 so far - they get pinched a lot you know!
Very good.. Even its a HQ Video.. but there are 2 Things: The M1 was released in 1988 and its not a Synthesizer, its a Workstation.. but who cares? I also love my M1 !!

What's the song you play at 3:30?
Great demo :-)

Thanks!
It was improvised at time of recording - but I may have inadvertently ripped something off.

whats the max polly? must be a large amount as some of those pads have really long release envelopes

I believe the polyphony on an M1 is 16 notes. Great Keyboard, always regretted selling mine :-(

I'm little confused by that comment - I use over half a dozen different key signatures. You can only count one of them?
I also use every finger at least once. My right hand is certainly more active than my left, but that's pretty common.
williamenroh 4 years ago
Maybe he means when you place 2 fingers on the same key as in part 2:13 your pinky and ring finger are on the same key? lol
bradwjensen 4 years ago
He said "in" the same key, not "on" the same key, which would normally refer to key signature.
But if it's referring to using two fingers to play the same note, I'd have to agree that it's fairly sloppy playing during that part.
williamenroh 4 years ago
Yeah, just a guess. i was wondering when i first read his comment too.
Very nice Synthesizer though, i love those sounds. :-)
Have you ever recorded any of your own stuff?

teh sound at 4.00 is amazing

That choir sound is legendary, problem is its just such a memorable preset. you can put the other waveforms into that and they sound just as deep.
dyspraxia 4 years ago
That's strange, but I really like the piano sound of the M1. It's not realistic, but quite poetic. And please not in those cheesy house tunes. The band Roxette used it on their song "Fading like a flower" and I really like how it sounds.
trevor001 4 years ago
what is the sound at 3.30 ??
MartyboyIV 4 years ago
83 / Stratos. It's a stock M1 sound.
It's the same preset as the 3:21 sound. I just switched up and down to clear the sustain.
williamenroh 4 years ago
Was part of this used on SonicStates 20 Greatest Synths? Actually I know it was..lol. Great shit anyway. The M1 is my fav synth of all time.

Brilliant historical video - thnx for putting this up !

Reminds me of "Track 13" or "Untitled" by Queen on Made In Heaven, which, Queen used this synth on the last two albums.

I love my M1 albeit in its dilapidated state. Universe and Lore are brilliant sounds.

Plus one - very nice. I remember when it was released, I considered buying one for its potential future value but couldn't really afford it just for that, If memory serves I believe they only made 1000 units. Eventually I got a standard m1, which only gets used for midi input to sequencer and, perversly, that includes using it to play a legacy M1 plugin!

good piano, cause i use PROG A65: M1 Piano on my korg X50..

Korg M1 sounds better than Korg Karma
Especially sax, piano, epiano, organs and others.
No more new korgs for me

I'm hoping to buy the M1 sounds on disc to play using Reason 3. I've seen some available on Ebay. I've only got a crappy Casio CTK-671 which isnt in the same league as the M1 but I'm a skint single parent !

Man those sounds bring back memories! I had an M1 until I needed to sell it to pay my Dad rent:-) I will be gettin' another soon!!

i've got the korg legacy collection digital edition which includes this synth plus the wavestation. its pretty cool to see the real thing!
hellspark 4 years ago

The M1 is my workhorse when gigging...it gets used and abused and still keeps delivering the goods
keefykeyz 4 years ago
Very good.. Even its a HQ Video.. but there are 2 Things: The M1 was released in 1988 and its not a Synthesizer, its a Workstation.. but who cares? I also love my M1 !!
Tittlekopf 4 years ago
It IS a sythesizer actually.
