It might be me, but I think this version is just not up to it. I thought the whole idea behind Roxanne was its raw energy. Nope, I think this was put together in a short time. Too short to sing in public anyway.
So great to see Sting working not with just a couple of rock instruments, but with a full orchestra. Nice sound. Not like the original Roxanne, but it is not supposed to be. Sting himself said in a recent interview that some of the edge is taken out but many colorations are added. And I agree.
The orchestra is irrelevant. Some of the original energy is sucked out by the lush, gentle, bland, orchestral background. Gotta try something new, though.
To all the haters and bashers: The great thing about living in a free country is, if you really prefer the original version of these songs... you can just stay away from the concerts.
Sting's new sound is based on his desire to try something new that spreads insightful and positive sounds into the world, to make life larger and fuller for his presence, not smaller and narrower by bitching bitching bitching how nothing's quite as fine as it was in the good old days.
Check this out from Sting's website! One of the most dynamic and successful musicians of our time, Sting, joins A&E's Emmy Award nominated series Private Sessions for a unique one hour event on Sunday, June 27th at 9am EDT and on Thursday, July 1st at 11pm EDT on BIO.
Private Sessions will feature "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic," "Desert Rose," "Fields of Gold," "Next To You," and "Every Breath You Take" and an in depth interview with Lynn Hoffman
@rockjosi I just can't agree. The arrangements here are absolutely amazing. I didn't think it was possible to make these songs any better, but Sting has managed to do it. His evolution as a muscian has been remarkable.
@AquariusLowtide Finally a comment that I agree with. He sounds horrible with this orchestra. Is he trying to ruin his songs? Andy Summers and Stewart Copeland are probably cringing. Thankfully I watched You Tube prior to buying a ticket.

Honestly, listening to this, I think he has probably had a good run.

Sting is a great artist. Too bad this arrangement reduces a magnificent orchestra to a mediocre small ensemble...

Hmm, the version he played in Ottawa was way different. It was a sweet slow song and he had his guitar, and it was simply gorgoeus

I liked the old arrangement better with the police. I just saw this show live here in Minnesota and I was pretty dissapointed with this song.
