I saw them on HBO and they are an amazing group of young people. The way they were taught was astounding. The teacher would pick out an instrument such as the part played by a trumpet, saxaphone, trumbone and then teach one student that part and then that student would show others that part. The best thing of all is that they were taught without sheet music. All of this was done from practice and more practice.
I'm very impressed - not only by their great skill, and feeling for the music, but also by their poise. They seem not to be distracted by the cameramen moving all around them while they play. Incredible!
@HildebrandJ - [T]he most famous tune associated with Goodman ... written by Louis Prima [with] vocals as the title suggests...However, the ... band kept changing it in performances, adding new passages ... to the point where it bore little resemblance to the original. -AllAboutJazz
I saw the HBO special on these kids. Awesome. Really cool shot of them walking backstage after the performance and they all walked by an amazed Chick Corea. Not one of them seemed to have noticed or recognized Chick. LOL. These kids and their teacher are too inspiring for words.
i was truly awed by everything. being a musician and always listening to jazz and salsa music you young men and women are truly blessed. i kow that you have wonderful parent's and a wonderful director, god bless and thank you from the bottom of my heart. KEEP UP THE WONDERFUL SOUNDS.
They are still so great! I used to be in the Louisville Leopards back in 2002 when I was in second grade :) they sure have a lot of attention now, and for good reason too!
I watched the HBO special when it first aired in January and cried, no sobbed all the way through it. I'm just in awe - Diane Downs is an incredible teacher. These kids are so lucky. I came to here to find videos back in January, but nothing was posted. Thank you so much for putting these up on YouTube, everyone should see these kids, they're amazing! Sing, Sing, Sing, just started and I'm crying again. That piece gets me every time, but hearing it played by these kids is so much more!

Louis Prima wrote "Sing, Sing, Sing"! Benny Goodman just substituted a clarinet solo for the trumpet.
