  • @smithsherman why does this people exits ... they are the ones that killed music. JUST BECAUSE ITS NOT HUGE AND EXITED IT DOES NOT MEAN, ITS BAD

  • It was 'an' interpretation!

  • A Mattias Dammann...get 40 -50K ready

  • does he have a dvd or something? :)

  • BEST VERSION

  • David Russell demonstrates amazing virtuosity and evenness of tone between apoyando and tirando when called for musically. Thanks for uploading--very enjoyable interpretation!

  • This video doesn't do Russell any justice! Still an awesome performance. And who decided to let the same guy have the top 2 comments. DX

  • good best

  • Fuck you Guitar16 all the music can transmit feelings ! Idiot

  • the 16 dislikes came from the incompetent lazy jealous bastards who prefer to learn sloppy ass metalcore music over true ART. music like this makes you glad to be human and makes one realize what one could learn if pushed. from a piece of wood and nylon strings many centuries back to your ears here in 2011....amazing!

  • @guitar16 man, metalcore is music too... metalcore artists express their feeling screaming and they sing right, so it's art, and of course, there are guitar riffs and solos and technique in drums and shit... please stop talking shit about different opinions and leave prejudices behind (sorry if my english sucks)

  • @Scaar81 im sure its a 'form' of art but no way is that crap music. just a wall of repetitive noise hahaha

  • @guitar16 no it isn't... i can play some metalcore songs with a clasical style in guitar and you could hear somethin really good... it's just that you don't like the distortion and the speed, but that doesn't mean it's noise

  • @Scaar81 "metalcore songs with a classical style" ??? uh-oh...sounds like another great kat impersonator. im open to it though if you want to drop me something you recorded

  • @masterofmetallica09 angus rocks!!

  • @jazzlefty no.

  • @Scaar81 Metalcore sucks, real traditional heavy metal, thrash metal, progressive metal, jazz, blues and all forms of classical music is what really counts!

  • Brilliant, as usual, David. Best wishes.

  • john williams blows this away

  • barrios would groan

  • IMMACULATE MASTER OF THE GUITAR!!! WE LOVE YOU DAVID!!! COME TO GREECE AGAIN AND ENCHANT US WITH YOUR MAGICAL PLAYING...I MISS YOUR MASTER CLASSES...David is the best teacher I have ever seen..!!!

  • Eat your twat out Sharon Isbin!

  • Awesome song! I'm kinda confused about the little music tag though. Song is in G major. One can be certain because the romantic guitarists used fixed solfege to name their pieces. Sol is 5, which is G. G major. Again though, epic song :)

  • i like the sound but i cant play it yet =/

  • bravo!!

  • Wow David Russell must have the best tone I've ever heard. I always prefer his interpretations over anyone else!

  • BIEN MAESTRO

  • it's the hair, it gives him amazing guitar playing abilities

  • By the way people, my goal is to get as good a tone as the master, David Russell.

  • This, in my opinion is the best interpretation of this piece out there. :)

  • AMAZING!!!!!!!

  • Great dynamic in volume

  • I'd find it very hard to criticize that performance, but it seems some commentators had their issues. I understand different people will always have different preferences about how a piece ought to be played but he undeniably did the overall piece alot of justice and deserves credit for that. I much preferred his rendition to john williams's.

  • you're right. He plays the whole campanella with the same fingering, while in every version I've ever heard of it changes for a few chords. I dont think any version has that.

Other than that....I dont know why everyone plays the campanella bit so technically. It has some beautiful harmonies but most players tend to run through them like its some king of gigue.

  • I think, it just sounds strange to me as I just know it the changing arpeggio-style. But otherwise I think, why changing it, Barrios was a composer for guitar music - he's the Chopin for this intsrument - it's no simple arrangement!

You are right, it's neither etude to improve your technique, but nor a meditation ! (is this correct english? I don't know ;o) It's an ecstatic climax ending up in the wonderful Strauss- Lento.

This passage is a capitel for its one (and that was a german idiom ^^ )

  • It's a good song. A good player. It's fine.

  • Magnifico!

que bela interpretación sel il numero uno brilliante

    magnifico

  • It sounds sorta like Circus muic.

I LOVE IT!! Reminds me of clowns or something.

  • on top of that, since there are so many diversity amongst instruments, a true musician should yeah, of course, dedicate to his/her instrument, but he should on top of that be a good musician, and enjoy music in overall

the old "put the fingers in the place" is the least anyone can do

a true musician does much more than that

  • love this vals

    just started to study it

gotta agree with blacklunden, each instrument has its own things, even if unfortunately the guitar has less known pieces than the piano or whatever

the guitar has a lot of "options" while, imo, yeah, there are a lot of great pieces for piano, but the piano lacks a lot of emotional options, sure you can have dynamics and a little articulation issues, but where are the different timbres? the guitar may have downsides, but a lot of upsides aswell

  • beautiful =)

  • Magnifico!

    que bela interpretación!

en la verdad tienes mucho talento y tocas con sentimiento.

    bravo!

  • also I wanna say that I dont like to compare in instruments in a hierarki. Every instrument has his personality. I think their is a sort of snobbism by some people who think that the violin or the piano is a much better instrument because of it`s big repertoir! the guitar fits very good for intimate pieces, not so good for a 20 minutes sonata maybe.

  • german, I respect your opinion but disagree a bit. I´m a classical guitarist but also a classical singer.I think you can do so much more with toneproduction in the guitar then the piano as an example, for example you can do real legato, get many different timbres and very nice vibrato, not a pumping diaphragm vibrato as a flute has ,but a vibrato that change in pitch

  • I've been to many piano/violin/guitar recitals, and I agree that the guitar is received less enthusiastically than the violin and piano. I feel this has a lot to do with the guitar's natural lack of volume ( when compared with the violin/piano). One needs to hear the guitar in a small room situation or -and this is very problematic - have the guitar amplified in some way.

  • ERES CHINGON

  • Toca muy bien esta pieza, pero siento que le hace falta mas fuerza en algunas notas un poquito de velocidad en algunas partes... pero david es un gran Guitarrista no es como otros que al momento en que tocan destrosan las piezas.

  • Thats talent and real guitar playing!

  • Look forward to hearing smithsherman's cuisine.

  • Thec Musicality is near perfect...if you see musicality as a microwaved lunch.

  • smithsherman = idiot music noob

  • smithsherman u r full of shit aren't you, the musicality is near perfect

just because somebody doesn't constantly change the rythm and tone doesn't mean it's played without musicality, noob

  • great!

  • The "Choice" of John Williams or David Russell is like being constrained to a menu of plain beef jerky ultra dry,or the same...ultra extra dry.

  • @smithsherman you are absolutely retarded

  • I dunno...they are BOTH so TALENTED...but if someone put a gun to my head and said 'CHOOSE!' I guess I would have to choose John Williams only because I think he exhibits slightly wider parameters with regards to dynamics.

  • The Musical phrasing of a concrete wall.

  • @smithsherman

You probably can play it better! lets hear it...

    gv

  • @smithsherman

musical critics always sound so vague!

  • @InnkeeperX

So true and that's because they're for the most part, wankers.

  • @smithsherman < The most ignorant person on earth.

  • This piece is so elegant and fun to play. I love the campanella section. He holds it into control and plays each note with its full beauty. I especially like the last line where he plays each note fast but perfectly clearly.

  • No one plays this, or any other guitar work, better then Russell(not even Williams. he completely understand the instrument. simply the best!

  • Oh really? Then plese tell me the name of one of your pieces, I'd love to read them.

  • you two should just drop it... it's quite obvious music is dependent on taste. Segovia disliked the work of Barrios, with the exception of La Catedral. There is a good chance rah0wa is more parallel with Segovia's tastes.

  • Although Segovia may have been a racist, bitter, and anal person, he was still revolutionary. Agustin Barrios was a musical genius at the level of Mozart, it is easy to see why Segovia, did not like him. If it were not for Segovia, the classical guitar might still be just a folk instrument. Because of him, the classical guitar is regarded just as highly as the piano, violin, or digeridoo. I highly doubt that you will acomplish even a fraction of what Segovia did.

  • I respect your opinion, however:

1)I don't think that Barrios was at the level of Mozart

  • I don't think Mozart was at the level of Barrios..

Better stop thinkin about his genius.. and start looking at the emotion he puts into the music he writes

Compare "Julia Florida" with "Symphony nº 38" it's a matter of opinion also

And I don't think it's healthy to compare those composer.. specially because of the difference in the time they lived.

  • If that's the only comment that you have, then you are jelouse. A person of true talent doesn't have to compete by putting another artist down! Proclaim your talent another way and don't mess with a talented timeless artist.

  • Barrios is the best guitar pieces composer ever.....I love Barrios!!!!

  • this is a waltz...how the hell do you dance to this!!!!LOL!!!!!!

  • With Grace and skill.

  • :-) You go one-two-three, one-two-three and try not to step on your partner's toes!

  • lol!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @inrk When did you last see anyone dancing to a classical guitarist, regardless of rubato?

  • A great song

    Outstanding performance

  • too much rubato. plays with tempo too much i think. I like david Russel though but not on this piece

  • think Barrios was known to alter how he played his own compositions over time...

  • yeah in a masterclass he said that playing with rubato is more effective than just dynamics. So he does do a lot with the tempo in some songs. I don't mind it on this song, but no one comes close to the William's recording of this, especially the ending where he just unleashes

  • Dear David, I discovered you thank's Nikita B.

and since, I regularly listen to you !

You are a great artist !I have a very good CD of you !

    Best regards.

  • Why would you put this up on a video posted by somebody other than David Russell? It's not as if he comes to every video of himself, egocentrically looking for fan mail.

  • David Russel really is an outstanding guitarist. But I dont like the way tends to interpret music. He has too many pauses or "rests" in his notation, and tends to play fast. To me, it feels as if it destroys the piece, and destroys the feeling. He is undoubtly a good guitarist, just not my type of interpreter./

  • I agree with you, but I think he made a much better interpretation here than he did on his Barrios CD. I've noticed that many of the Asian guitarists have interpreted this piece brilliantly.

  • then please upload your better interpretation.

  • Simply outstanding.

  • Definitive Barrios by a great musician!

  • Its a bit too fast for my taste. Specially the intro. I understand this piece a different way, but this a flawless performance no doubt. WELL DONE!

  • Barrios built his own guitars from scratch....Then wrote and performed music like this. Out of abject poverty. a century ago..........cant we all aspire a bit?

  • He also used a steel string for a while, too. I didn't know he was a luthier.

  • ...I have the impression that once every now and then these kind of people like Mangore are sent down to earth...just to see if one is ready for something better...they come and go and one doesn't learn...it's more than obvious that one isn't ready...

  • agustin pio barrios!!! la MASA!!!!

  • sweet gad

  • He's incredible. I just saw a concert and master class. He really knows his stuff... REALLY knows his stuff...

  • que buen guitarrista da un buen sentido a la misca clasica

  • David Russell es un guitarrista magnifico.

David Russell is a magnificient (great) guitar player.

  • I'm playing this piece, too, but not like Russell, you can bet.

  • I'm currently working on this piece.

    Its kicking my face off.

  • amazing!
