  • as this story revolves around the deceipt of a woman singer impersonating a man who can, as a woman impersonator sing such high notes that he blows all other female impersonators out of the water I really don't think it works with anyone who can't perform that trick...Julie could do it just, with some pre-recorded help, in 1995, but surely Liza couldn't, and Julie's other replacement, Rachel Welch never hit any notes at all...might be fun with Chenoweth though :-)

  • If I were Liza's mgr, I wouldn't have let her do this number. It's dreadful! JA puts her to shame. Loss had her good performances, but this isn't one of them!

  • I like Liza, but compared to Julie Andrews, this version sucks!

  • liza is just wonderful. the song was written for julies range and the changed it up for liza both are wonderful julie has a better range but lizas dancing is far better

  • liza is great in everything she does. Was the rest of the broadway show filmed. If so please put it on youtube please. Thankyou

  • Its true that Julie Andrews did it great. But Liza is also great.

  • Please stop comparing Julie and Liza. I love them both but they are different from each other. Yes they are both GREAT AND ENORMOUSLY TALENTED why can't people just accept that. Liza did her best during this run. please remember that she filled in for Julie because this is an extremely taxing show and the lady needed a break. Love 2:20-2:30 best part ever.

  • @strawberrycurrant Actually she filled in for Julie because Julie became very sick and required surgery and hasn't been able to sing since.

  • @emmadilemmasings yes I do know that too.

  • Liza is a Idol, and she is great, but I need to say it; Julie is the best Victor/ia, so androgynous, so hot... Julie

  • i like it, but i'm stil waiting de high note at the end.

  • This was a scary experience. I now going to watch Julie Andres sing it.....since she owns this song!

  • @LivingMindfully1975 You're so right *_*

  • This is horrible. Why did Liza agree to be a part of this production?

  • I saw her in this she was horrible beyond words and I love liza

  • NOOOOOOOOOO ! I can't believe Liza butchered this number !! BRING JULIE BACK ! No offense to Liza Minnelli or anything, she's usually pretty fabulous herself but COME ON !!!! No one can replace Julie Andrews in this !! NO ONE ! ...so disappointed.

  • Liza looks great and sounds magnificent...sorry but no way could Julie compare to the soulful Liza..Bravo Minnelli!!!

  • @bradly2007 Oh Lord. You're twisted. I love Liza so much, but better than Julie ?

  • Liza would have been amazing in this had is been 1977 and not 1997... Cocaine can do some nasty things to you

  • As much as I like Liza she's pretty bad in this. Why she agreed to do it is a mystry .

  • Really awful. especially when she's wheeled out so the real dancers can take over and then comes back to "climax" the number. Poor in all ways.

  • Liza is great here. Shes a much better dancer

  • Brava Liza for making the role yours. Such an attractive guy!

  • I think that the score is fabulous, in the movie, but somehow the score did not translate well to the Broadway stage. I saw Julie on in the run;it was clear she was suffering vocally but still gave it her all. Well I can't claim to have seen her in "MFL" or "Camelot" but she still was quite wonderful in this incongruous melange that the Broadway show was. The movie was spectacular. James Gardner and Preston were major reasons for this!!!

  • this is the first clip (for me) where vocally, she has sounded almost identical to Judy.

I actually had the window minimized and thought for a second that it WAS Judy.

  • ya she was definitely the daughter who got the voice.

  • I played KING MARCHAN in a regional production - absolutely HATED every moment of it. Watched this video just to relive the horror....and the fact that I am NOT a huge Liza Minnelli fan. I humbly eat crow. Ms. Minnelli turned in a FINE job of doing this Dog's Dinner of a score - especially considering that this was a vehicle created for Julie Andrews. Maybe that's why I hated it - "my" Victoria was neither Ms. Andrews...or, now I HAVE to say, Ms. Minnelli.

  • I think she is very good I mean not as great as Julie but still she is amazing, She Is FREAKING LIZA!

  • defenitley not as polished as Ms. Andrews

  • well, liza a much more spontaneous performer and julie is more refined.

  • They both had the same surgery

  • OMG EW!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NO COMPARING Julie is WAY BETTER then this CRAP!!!!!

  • then ending wasnt much of a vocal range show off!! though i still love her!

  • THE GREATEST LIVING ENTERTAINER

  • Man does chick SUCK compared to Julie

  • i could not agree more!

  • i like julie better than Liza..JULIE RULES

  • Liza really brought her own to this... I love julie but I love the way the tempo was changed from julies version... after the the guy sang liza kept the same beat going... julie slowed it down a bit too much...Liza liza liza! But love you too julie x

  • WOW!

Seeing this makes me want to see the show. I never had wanted before....and has anyone else noticed the end.... She removes the head dress and she looks like a man but notice the Prosthetics on her temples... I Now see how thats possible especially given the plot. Watch it closely I thinks its really cool how she really does change her persona with that thing on... really looks like a man! Strange.

  • Liza¨s a real dancer... much better than julie guys!!!!!

Amazing !!! the fosse style marvellous !

    She¨s a complete artist!!!!!!

  • When I saw Liza twice in VV, she was fabulous. Don't believe all of the negative press. The musical was lacking, but she took the audience's breath away!

  • She's a marvellous dancer. She's mesmerizing as always. I agree with a couple of the posts that said the arrangements lagged and were unexciting---what a shame, and I can see that even from this clip. Why did they wheel her offstage, then on again? To take away the most interesting performer for a dull dance extension...then bring her back once the doldrums are beginning..? It's so nice someone posted this. thanks.

  • Liza is clearly the type for this role and does a great job...another classic performance from a legend and too bad the leading man was threatened by her talent...what is his name? Bravo Liza!!!

  • You're soooo right. I love love LOVE Julie, and always will... but she was past her vocal prime when she did the Broadway version. Most of the songs were re-written to a lower key to accomodate her. And the show was mediocre thru no fault of her own.

  • Yes, fascinating to make the inevitable Julie/Liza comparison.

I hesitate to say it, but I don't think this particular arrangement of the song shows either off to her best advantage. Now if you want PERFECTION, you watch Julie in the original. She is the most appealing and talented entertainer of all time. Past, present and future. imHo, of course...;)

That is just one of the laws of the universe like gravity or procreation.

  • @charlexington Your words are like music for me XD

  • @charlexington "The most appealing and talented entertainer of all time, past present and future" isn't Ms Julie Andrews, or ANY broadway star for that matter, iMHo. Numerous other soprano, tenor, baritone, mezzo, bass, contralto, stage actor/actress of the past century TRUMP over all of them. At any time

  • Thank you for posting this. Much better than I thought it would be and what it was "reputed" to be. Shows ya, gotta see it for yourself. Can't believe everything you read, eh? Grazie.

  • Just like to say thank's for uploading this clip. I never got to see this show on Broadway with either artistes, it looks wonderful. Both are amazing performer's in their own right and even to this day ,with their physical difficulties, they could knock the socks off many so called "talents" out there. The chorus are truly amazing. I have never seen dancer's in London show's give what Broadway dancer's do............wonderful!!!!!

  • Julie hates being called wholesome. She has had that label forever for her role as Mary Poppins and her performance in the Sound of Music. She's a lot balsier than you think.

  • Julie is the only reason why a broadway production was even MADE because of her role in the MOVIE!!!! DUH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • of course julie does it better..

the same would happen if they put julie to perform sally bowles.

  • great comment! i agree.

  • I agree! I still think she's AWESOME, even today, when she can't be as physical. But if you seek out her 1981 New Orleans video (sometimes on DVD on Ebay) you can see her dancing and stretching those legs as far as the sky! If you had put THAT Liza into Victor/Victoria then this clip would have melted YouTube down!

  • Great video. I just was wondering who was the jazz singer and do you have the entire footage of him and the song?

  • THE CHORUS DANCERS ARE AWESOME!!!!

  • To my mind, Julie and Liza are totally different artists. Julie is the trained musician, the subtle comedian of well cultivated British humour. Liza is the natural singer, the well trained dancer, and full of charisma. I love them both, but I must say Julie's singing pleases me more, although Liza's belting reminds me of her mama. :o)

  • Liza's Victor/Victoria is Sally Bowles all grown up. Julie is majestic and understated in her performance of this. Liza did a good job, but it was same old same old. Julie made Victoria 3d. Thanks for posting this; it's fascinating. I never thought I'd have the good fortune to be able to compare the two performance. Keep up the good work :)

  • I do have Julie's version on DVD. But Liza makes it even sexier! A little CABARET touch to le Jazz Hot. That was AWESOME!

  • liza better than julie by far. The dance steps were changed by Liza....more Fosse. Better by far I'LL SAY!

  • Really Julie Andrews is the best! No one can compare to her. But Liza sang quite well too.

  • Didn't Liza break a hip during this show?

  • not that i know of. she had her first hip surgery prior to this show.

this was the show that caused her to have vocal cord surgery.

  • no the vocal cord surgery was Julie not Liza

  • Nah, she didn't get hurt. Had a full healthy run while Julie Andrews was on vacation.
