the Banaban people were shipped to Fiji islands in MASS after their land got fucked up by the British colonials BECAUSE THEY COULDNT LIVE AND GROW CROPS THERE ANYMORE...Banabans LIVE IN THE Fiji islands for A REASON
I have posted some photos that I took in 1973 of Tuvalu, Kiribati, Nauru and Fiji. They can be found on Web shots and by doing a search on "coopec100"
There are a lot of Banabans in the Fiji Islands. They inhabit two islands and called it Rabi and Kioa. The Banabans in Fiji are considered native fijians so as Rotumans up northern Fiji. They have a representative in the Fiji government and also in the Great Council of Chiefs. I believe Banabans in Fiji are more lucky and fortunate elsewhere. Bula.
Banaba was NOT given Indepedence BUT was ANNEXED to Kiribati. If it was given Independence the Banaban people would govern and rule their own people, instead after a long battle with Great Britain in the ealry 1900's GB annexed Banaba and gave it to Kiribati. The Original Banabans were scattered during WW2 to Kusai, Nauru,Tarawa, and others to Fiji in Rabi.Banaba was NEVER GIVEN ITS INDEPENDENCE TILL TODAY
it's so sad, why doesn't anyone live there any longer? It seems like such a nice island. How did you visit it? From which country/island did u fly? Is it possible to stay at the island? (even with a tent?) what about the inhabitants? thanks!
I think you would fly to Fiji then to Bonriki airport Tarawa (Capital of Kiribati) by Air Pacific. Then probably take a supply ship from Betio in Tarawa.
Do you the mean the phosphate? no, they load it onto ships and take it away to Australia and wherever else it was needed. Phosphate is old accumulated bird droppings that was and is used for fertilizer.
Banaba was given independence as it is now part of the Republic of Kiribati. The original inhabitants were moved to Fiji but they didn't return after independence.
There are four voices in the clip; the first I believe is a British MP, the second is Ieremia the first President of Kiribati, the third is Minister from the Church Of England from the pulpit at Westminster Abbey during the blessing of new Kiribati flag and the last, is again a British MP during the late 70's.
I am glad for those people . greeting from Romania , Florian
