today i was shopping and I looked at a lable and i was so happy to see that it actually said- Oils (Canola, Palm), Put that product doown and walked away
There are several issues here. Firstly, transparent product labeling so consumers know what they are buying and have the power to choose. Secondly, legal production of palm oil - pressure put on producing nations to prosecute illegal farmers and laws put in place to stop further land clearing and forest burning.
Until now Ive been part of the problem, I know now what the massive consumption of palm oil is doing to the earth and our precious creatures. We need to get this problem to the people and get labeling for palm oil on all products containing it, and better still we need to make palm oil a dirty word and get is phased out of products all together. The only way to make corporations notice and change behavior is when it hits their bottom line.
I wan't the choice. I think it's digusting that this is happpening and right under the noses of the goverments and companies. This should be the top order of priority at the Copenhagen Conference right now.
I believe it is to ask producers to be up front and transparent about their ingredients. Also,
RReederHunt, I love your insight that this is used a lot just to keep junk food edible longer - it is quite sad that our race would threaten the earth and the lives of orangutans just so we can get fat and shorten our lives. Well done Zoos Victoria. PS and well done Cadbury and KFC for both making stands to move away from Palm Oil - shows it is possible. Come on Colgate-Palmolve and Arnotts!
The problem is sustainability of palm oil plots. The top soil in the rainforest is incredibly thin. Once the native vegetation is gone, the top soil soon washes away, and the people who cleared their land are not better off, making it a lose-lose- situation. So much palm oil is used to extend shelf life of junk food (crackers, cookies, microwave popcorn, South Beach diet food and NutriSystem diet food - -those entrees that don't need refrigeration, etc.) for developed nations.

You already have a choice. You can choose whether or not you want to eat food with vegetable oil in it. But don't force other people to bend to your will just because they do something you don't like.
Vegetable Oil isn't always Palm Oil, that's the point!
It is also possible to have sustainably grown palm oil. That's what we're not getting, I've only ever seen one product that read 'sustainably grown palm oil'.
If a food doesn't meet your standards (i.e. it doesn't tell you if it's palm oil), you can choose not to eat it. You'll effect more change with your wallet than you will by asking your government to make laws that force people to do what you want them to. You really have the power yourself. If those companies want your business, they'll start labeling things the way you want them without any government interference. This video says, "I'm too helpless to choose what I want, so I want the ..."
I find it interesting that Palm Oil is allowed to be labeled as vegetable oil. Palm Oil is derived from the Palm Fruit! It's a fruit - not a vegetable......
I want the choice too! We don't always get it on products in Belgium. It annoys me how food industries try to hide things from us to prevent us from not buying their products! Well make good products then, with heart, and ethics! If your products were that good you wouldn't have to be afraid!

This is not a matter of necessity, but this is due to greedy people. This is a tragedy.
