i have a crkt m16 knife. i absolutely love it but the blade went dull and i cannot seem to be able to sharpen it. i have tried grinders, wetstones, and manyothers. i just cannot get it razor sharp anymore. do u have any tips.
I just got mine today, M21 04G (G10 handles, hey it's freezing temperatures during the winter here) now im not planning on using it for batoning, got my parang for that but I think it's a sweet knife, and it came out of the box razor sharp, it pealed of hairs from my arm as nothing ;) nearly to sharp hehe, but it's fine, CRKT has taken their sharpening more seriously it seems. There was a period of time in human evolution where steel knives like this were unheard of.

@EQPconnoisseur I'm not really sure why you and a lot of people miss the point. Watching the vid he clearly says (in summary) He knows it's abused and wants to see if it can take it....he does not ding the design and he says fix blade is of course the best way to go. He's doing a what-if test. It is seriously obvious.

He does not pan the design in the review and he says fix blade is of course the best way to go. He is doing a "what if" test. It is seriously obvious.
@EQPconnoisseur Ok... this knife is literally advertised as becoming a fixed blade while locked. Don't believe me? Go look at Bladeplay. Of course Loctite is going to help it stay together, but so what? If you advertise your lock as being amazing, you should be prepared for people to be batoning with your knife. Also, virtually every manufacturer I have heard when talking about batoning, says that you should pound on the blade stock, as opposed to pounding on the lock or handle.
I EDC this knife...by far one of my favorite medium sized folding knives...last week in my surveying class, we were in the field and had some tree branches that were obstructing our line of site from our fixed surveying points(summer class has more growth that the normal fall class)...alot of the guys were talking about going home and getting machetes...i whipped out my CRKT and went to chopping...the 1-2in. diameter branches didnt stand a chance for this knife...and I havent sharpend it in a yr
I've got the M16-13Z and the 3" M21. I really like these knives. They are reasonably priced, fast deploying, they carry well and aren't too heavy. You get a lot of blade for the money. I've got Kershaws, Cold Steels, Bucks and Benchmades but I really like these knives over some of the more expensive brands. These knives have a lot of character and are just interesting to look at.
I will say however that the M16 came dull but was easily sharpened and the handles could be a lot grippier.
I own a carson sfg m16 in tanto combi edge. But i rarely use it i prefer to use the smaller and dirt cheap m16 10z that i bought for my girlfriend for my edc needs. i ended up liking the m16 10z thats what pushed me to buy the m16 sfg. the only thing i hate about them is the autoLAWKS. Its way to complicated to close. It adds unnecessarry steps to a simple procedure of closing the knife.
@roentgen571...Totally agree...I suspect he wouldn't normally use a folder for batoning, but when a company makes spectacular claims nut'n's going to hold their feet to the fire...cool knife though, huh?
CRKT bills this knife as a virtual fixed blade. You wouldn't NORMALLY pound on a knife like this but when a company makes such a strong claim, it's almost irresistible. He did acknowledge - several times that using lock-tite would have probably fixed the issue. But I think a knife should come ready to go without having to doctor it up. Saying that, I LOVE my M21-14DSFG. This knife is the sharpest "out of the box" knife that I've ever seen...by far. And, it's 8Cr13MOV steel.
@larrydonnelly1 My M21-04G, very similar to the one he used in this video... Love it. It's staying in my emergency bag. I think I'd rather have something like a Ka-Bar for batoning anyway.
dude nutnfancy i have 1 question not on the crkt m-21 but it came to my attention in the vid that a survival folder for a back up blade is a good thing to have just incase the fixed blade does fail, i do have one in my survival kit after my ultima ( great knife) and my folder is the cold steel ak-47 i was just woundering if that was a apropriate blade for survival????, i feel asking someone with alot of experience in the field with knives is the best way to go
I bet I could pound my M21-14SF into any bone in your body and it will not fail me in doing so....hee haw, glad you were not on the front lines with me in Afghanistan.
He is like i wonder why this happened, think back 30 seconds ago when you were beating the crap out of it with a piece of wood into another piece of wood, i wonder what could go wrong
this is an old dry peice of wood see how an axe does with it.the other folders he did were easyer to split .but there is a problem with the m-16s .the washer in the pivit is to thick if you sand it down or replace it with the right thickness so that it can be tighted metal to metal it should preform better.it is what nutnfancy calls a high value knife .the pivit pin on the knife he is talking about isn't tight
woah the batoning is way to close to the tip! thats basically a spine wack test but worse! batoning should be done when hitting the blade closer to the handle dude!
Uh, yeah, let's use a pocket knife and chop wood with it. Up here in the non-tactical northwest we normally use what is called a hatchet. Good thing your not into demo derbys, I bet you show up in a Corvette.
The problem I had with my M21 was how weak the serration tips were. I have serations, and right when I opened it I slid the serrated part of the blade through some wood. Guess what? The serration tips acctually bent from one use on some wood. The knife is a good knife however dont get the serrated blade. They made the serrated part of the blade SO thin that it would acctually bend and dull the serrated part of the blade :O
i got the m21-14sfg and the serrations got chips in it after light use (chopping a couple bamboo trees) idk if its cuz i sharpened it weird but it was very disappointing. did anyone else have this problem ???
Great review but i got a couple questions. 1.) On their website it doesnt seem like CRKT offers a 4 position pocket clip, how did you get yours? 2.) Does the flip lever ever get caught/hung up in your pocket when you take out the knife?
Quick update, checking it out a little closer found that the liner lock is drilled out for tip up carry, WTF CRKT you could have at least done the liner side handle as well.
Had a CRKT M16 back in the day and liked it, saw this review and this blade just did it for me; big blade, aluminum handles, fast opening, left,right/tip up,down carry and that sweet looking grey finish. Plus that spear point is SICK. Now the bad, ordered the blade from amazon; same model number M21-04 and to my surprise only tip down right hand carry. I'm a lefty so that BLOWS. I still think it's a sweet blade, I just hate it when manufactures remove useful features.
@ nutnfancy, gotta ask,... ever thought of a cold steel folder as your folding survial knife? the spartan knive has a 300 lb stress on the pivot and lock
The problem that happened in that video is fixed now in new models. The angle at the back of the blade that blocks the liner is greatly increased to the point where the liner could not travel to the other side of the blade and get stuck like it did in the video
Clips are very hard to get right for some reason. I almost lost my benchmade for ever when i was getting a Christmas tree and it snagged on someone elses tree and had to run them down
I think with a loose pivot srew or in general play from side to side almost every liner fails. This task also should be a last resort with a folder. Maybe will stand up a little more if you'd tighten it when it loosens! Getting this knife tomorrow. The liner is a little thin but what a great looking knife!
I have carried the M21-04 for about 3 yrs ( maybe longer ) the only problem I have is the screws on the pocket clip can strip out easily, otherwise I love it, especially the way people jump when the hear the CLACK when I open it.
Never went as far as chopping down trees, but having had one for years I recommend a lil thread lock; even if you get her a little tight she's still easy to deploy.
Anything is going to break if you incessantly beat the everloving shit out of it. All you proved is that it's not forged out of the heart of a neutron star.
i have carried my M16-13M everyday for 3 years. I have used it for splitting fire wood, and other sorts of hard work, and it has never failed. Just treat it right and it will treat you right. also the aus8 blade is awesome. really want this tough, looks like the ultimate knife. pretty shure it would be a decent survival knife to, as long as it is not subjected to much negative force.
I just got an M21 14-SFG, and it is hands down the coolest knife I've ever owned!!! It would be great to see a review on one in the future...I think if you bought one you'd love it!
The same thing with the liner lock fail happens with my gerber evo a lot. I'm not banging on it with a log, but if I put to much downforce on it the liner snaps over and I really have to work it to get it back over.
You should do a video on what are some of the strongest folding knife locks. I know when I look for a knife I place my decision heavily on strength. That's why i don't like liner locks that much.
i think it's just plain risky to use a folder to split wood. this guy only has, what, a hundred other fixed blades he could use? why bother just breaking knives?
Nothing wrong with testing a product outside its application, to its failure.... informative review. A test to failure is more informative than a glowing table top review. I have this and the Tom Hammond designed CRKT cruiser. Nice budget priced folders, but for batoning I will look elsewhere.
obviously some people don't get what nutnfancy is trying to do. he is trying to inform others of quality, high value gear without being attached to a single company.(correct me if i'm wrong) and why not test something to the extreme once or twice along the way?
That wasn't Batoning, that was "Hammer the wrong sized knife, at awkward angles, until it breaks" I would suggest putting money into some Proper Survival courses, rather than breaking gear on Youtube and calling it a "Review"
Nutnfancy! Just watched your video on the M21-04 and had to comment! I own an M21-14SFG, the serrated version with two flippers, and I carried it for well over a year without any problems at all! But I did discover that these knives don't play well with hammers. I was cutting a 2x4 using the knife and a hammer and the tip-half of the blade snapped right off just before I got through the board! Getting another one because I love them so much!
i have the M16-03Z, and it also makes that crisp mechanical sound when i deploy the blade. a very tactile feature that makes me happy every time i hear it (2nd kind of cool). also a useful size and weight which makes it my edc blade. thanks for all the vids nutn
I have the smaller version of this knife, couldn't keep it sharp (have not modified the relief edge), is no longer my EDC, replaced by a kirshaw. Most likely won't sell the knife, but I don't carry it. Knowing what I know now, would not have purchased it for EDC.
Lol. He did beat the shit out of it. He ALSO said it wasn't the knife's fault, it was his own, and that it was still a good knife from a great company, in case you weren't listening. IMO, though, if you want a survival tool, a nice medium (and preferably BRIGHT) fixed blade with a zytel sheath is the best bet. The CRKT neckolace, for instance. I'm glad he did this though. It is good to know what failings any knife type can have under survival circumstances.
honestly, he should have called it "excellence unless you totally abuse and misuse a folding knife" no folding knife should be used like that because thats not what folding knives are made for. in my opinion
@albi131 i honestly can't say anything about that folder since i dont have any experience with it. can you do the things he did in this video without the lock failing?
@stan1234655 I don't have experience with it too but I was talking about another knife. I think that you can baton the wood without lock failing. I've just watched BLUNTRUTH4U's ontario rat 1 review and in 2 part of the review he was batoning wood using a special technique. Everyone should check it out.
Just got a M21-12G with the Veff serration. As an update, you can now (with the "G" model) change the pocket clip to cary up or down but still only right handed. The serration pattern is very nice with a very deep, and sharp, edge. It seems to bite into whatever you are cutting very nicely. I tried it out on a couple boxes at work and boy did it cut well. The cliche "hot knife through butter" is an understatement with this knife.
there was NOOOO way i was riding all the way back to the barn and back out for more gas. I reached into my pocket and pulled out my M 21-4 and made quick work of the saplings. At first i just hacked at them using the weight of the knife but as they grew larger in diameter i used another log as a mallet to cut wedges....THE KNIFE'S PERFORMANCE WAS FLAWLESS!!!!!!!! I attribute it to the lock-tight and beautiful engineering of this knife...THANKS NUTN!!!!!!!!! :)
So i bought this knife because of this video and the first thing i did was lock-tight the blade. The second thing that i did with it was fairly remarkable and i wish i'd had a video camera with me. I needed to clear a fallen tree and some saplings that were blocking part of a horse trail at a ranch that i used to work at. So, i rode out onto the trail with a chainsaw that i thought was full of gas....after i finished cutting the fallen tree into manageable pieces the chainsaw died
I'm not quite sure why Nutn wanted to baton with this knife in the first place, but hey, now I know the limits of it. At least he didn't bad mouth the knife and say it was crap. He admitted he used the knife outside of its ideal use, which was the right thing to do.
I'm planing on getting the smaller G10 version of this. It was a decision between the M21 G10 and the M16 EDC spearpoint, but I like the blade shape of the M21 more.
I have an M21-14SFG and its the greatest ever. It has a g10 handle making it much more erginomic, and the thumbstop so it can be gripped better. I love the Veff serrations, and theyre sharp enough to cut you by brushing them. The m21's are some of the best multipurpose folders around.
Great knives. I have the M-16 and the M-16z. Only thing I would say about the fail is that the liners are rather thin in these. Under normal condition and use they hold up perfectly. Very fair review in my opinion.
i hate that i live in the netherlands for one: the laws....and second of all the prices the m21-04 is f-ing 80 euro's!!!!!!!!!!! ............and dont forget that de euro is worth alot more than the dollar ........its just ridiculous
This behavior is unbelievable. My father taught me the proper way to treat a knife when I was five. All this proves is that you can abuse anything until it breaks. This was a total fail of the operator, not the knife.
No. Actually, my father is a sheet metal machinist who worked for two decades with one of the major auto companies, and now is fleet manager for a medical laser equipment transportation company. He has been using tools, edged and otherwise, probably for longer than either of us has been alive. His first rule was a proper tool for the proper job. Breaking a tool doing a job it was never intended for proves nothing. We already know that a folding knife is a compromise of form and function already.
whats the difference between the m21 04 and the m21 02?

@EQPconnoisseur I'm not really sure why you and a lot of people miss the point. Watching the vid he clearly says (in summary) He knows it's abused and wants to see if it can take it....he does not ding the design and he says fix blade is of course the best way to go. He's doing a what-if test. It is seriously obvious.

@nutnfancy sorry lad, im with EQPconnoisseur on this 1.........you know how to fuck up a good knife :)
MrDBeukes 3 months ago

@Beast9156 what about a large 10 inch or 11 inch survival knife?
Ookaminokemono 8 months ago

It adds unnecessarry steps to a simple procedure of closing the knife.

about time nutn did another crkt review. you know nutn is for real because he even reviews stuff that he personally doesnt like.
spo3nazgul 10 months ago
@roentgen571...Totally agree...I suspect he wouldn't normally use a folder for batoning, but when a company makes spectacular claims nut'n's going to hold their feet to the fire...cool knife though, huh?
larrydonnelly1 10 months ago
CRKT bills this knife as a virtual fixed blade. You wouldn't NORMALLY pound on a knife like this but when a company makes such a strong claim, it's almost irresistible. He did acknowledge - several times that using lock-tite would have probably fixed the issue. But I think a knife should come ready to go without having to doctor it up. Saying that, I LOVE my M21-14DSFG. This knife is the sharpest "out of the box" knife that I've ever seen...by far. And, it's 8Cr13MOV steel.
larrydonnelly1 10 months ago
@larrydonnelly1 My M21-04G, very similar to the one he used in this video... Love it. It's staying in my emergency bag. I think I'd rather have something like a Ka-Bar for batoning anyway.

dude nutnfancy i have 1 question not on the crkt m-21 but it came to my attention in the vid that a survival folder for a back up blade is a good thing to have just incase the fixed blade does fail, i do have one in my survival kit after my ultima ( great knife) and my folder is the cold steel ak-47 i was just woundering if that was a apropriate blade for survival????, i feel asking someone with alot of experience in the field with knives is the best way to go
usmc11able 11 months ago
So in other words, if the pivot screw would have been lik-tited, the knife would have probably passed with flying colors.

this is an old dry peice of wood see how an axe does with it.the other folders he did were easyer to split .but there is a problem with the m-16s .the washer in the pivit is to thick if you sand it down or replace it with the right thickness so that it can be tighted metal to metal it should preform better.it is what nutnfancy calls a high value knife .the pivit pin on the knife he is talking about isn't tight

Great review but i got a couple questions. 1.) On their website it doesnt seem like CRKT offers a 4 position pocket clip, how did you get yours? 2.) Does the flip lever ever get caught/hung up in your pocket when you take out the knife?
GreaseMonkey250 1 year ago
Quick update, checking it out a little closer found that the liner lock is drilled out for tip up carry, WTF CRKT you could have at least done the liner side handle as well.
lmmmonster 1 year ago
Had a CRKT M16 back in the day and liked it, saw this review and this blade just did it for me; big blade, aluminum handles, fast opening, left,right/tip up,down carry and that sweet looking grey finish. Plus that spear point is SICK. Now the bad, ordered the blade from amazon; same model number M21-04 and to my surprise only tip down right hand carry. I'm a lefty so that BLOWS. I still think it's a sweet blade, I just hate it when manufactures remove useful features.

TheGuyWithAWeirdName 1 year ago
The problem that happened in that video is fixed now in new models. The angle at the back of the blade that blocks the liner is greatly increased to the point where the liner could not travel to the other side of the blade and get stuck like it did in the video

I think with a loose pivot srew or in general play from side to side almost every liner fails. This task also should be a last resort with a folder. Maybe will stand up a little more if you'd tighten it when it loosens! Getting this knife tomorrow. The liner is a little thin but what a great looking knife!

Just treat it right and it will treat you right. also the aus8 blade is awesome. really want this tough, looks like the ultimate knife. pretty shure it would be a decent survival knife to, as long as it is not subjected to much negative force.

Getting another one because I love them so much!

insanefarmer 1 year ago

mattjackson710 1 year ago
So i bought this knife because of this video and the first thing i did was lock-tight the blade. The second thing that i did with it was fairly remarkable and i wish i'd had a video camera with me. I needed to clear a fallen tree and some saplings that were blocking part of a horse trail at a ranch that i used to work at. So, i rode out onto the trail with a chainsaw that i thought was full of gas....after i finished cutting the fallen tree into manageable pieces the chainsaw died
mattjackson710 1 year ago
I'm not quite sure why Nutn wanted to baton with this knife in the first place, but hey, now I know the limits of it. At least he didn't bad mouth the knife and say it was crap. He admitted he used the knife outside of its ideal use, which was the right thing to do.

This behavior is unbelievable. My father taught me the proper way to treat a knife when I was five. All this proves is that you can abuse anything until it breaks. This was a total fail of the operator, not the knife.

Was your dad a gear tester too? -- Veri
nutnfancy 1 year ago
