  • Actually we use S because the latin word for distance (space) is Spatium.

Please thumbs up so everyone can see it.

  • wait, don't you have to make the answer in appropriate significant digits?

  • @PuhLayFuL Sig figs don't really matter in physics nor in biology, it only really matters in chemistry.

  • @IShwazZeRI no.... it matters in physics. he probably just forgot. lol

  • @skateandtennis Ohh maybe I forgot if sigfigs mattered or not lol. But I'm pretty sure when I took it last time, it didn't matter. Or at least the professor said it didn't. :/

  • Marry me!

  • Salman Khan holds three degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology: a BS in mathematics, a BS in electrical engineering and computer science, and an MS in electrical engineering and computer science. He also holds an MBA from Harvard Business School. HOLY SHIT THANK YOU SO MUCH KHAN

  • it's very circumstantial but merry

  • saving my life in physics honors. love you lmao

  • Very enjoyable thank you

  • in disintegration the denuminator is d.

  • some sweet info here

  • Very enjoyable thank you

  • I've always confused velocity and speed, since my native language does not make that distinction...

  • I have a Physics teacher that explains nothing, and he just gives us a bunch of notes to read and a couple of assignments. And he never tells us where or why we're incorrect. Instead, he just shows us an answer sheet and expects us to jot down everything... without explaining the concepts behind it.

  • @Xoneize I don't know what your education system is like, but i would go over his head and complain.

  • Hey sal have you heard about the Bloom's Taxonomy? If you haven't done a vid about it yet, you should :)

  • We have a physics teacher who doesn't explain anything, and then asks us to do exercises. But now, I feel like you're gonna explain me physics, which I like (but it was ruined by my teacher) more easily! Thank you :)

Oh, and also, we used V and S even when we talked about scalars, and never used d or r. Maybe because of the difference in our language? We don't have a special word for velocity anyway, so that may be it :/

  • Great videos keep them up! :D I am a sophomore in HS and I take Physics my senior year. Gonna make straight As by then lol (:

  • looks like Shantanu was in some heavy traffic

  • omg I guessed that 5000 divide by 3600 would be exactly 1.39 and I didn't use a calculator or whatever, I calculated that in my brain in 2 seconds!

    I R genius?

  • a reason that s is used for displacement instead of d is that it is far too easy to confuse displacement with distance.

  • I love you!

  • My teacher once told us that the s stands for "stratas", which, I believe was, Latin for "distance covered". Please correct me when I'm wrong.

  • in the denoominator

  • my teacher uses "distance" instead of "displacement." He uses 'x' for distance instead of 's' for displacement.

  • Sal! Keep it up! Have you gotten a Nobel Prize or an award of some sort yet?

  • loved it , thanks sir

  • As I understand it (not that you'll be reading these comments after three months), s is for displacement because

    A) d is for distance, as well as later the derivative.

    B) s can stand for space, which is a clearer way of describing displacement.

  • Sully is the best

  • d in calculus is the discriminant, which is defined by d = b^2 − 4ac, that's probably why …

  • @CasperBHansen

The discriminant is used with polynomials (and isn't solely confined to just quadratics), so it's part of algebra. And it is more commonly a triangle (delta).

  • right, got the calculus term mixed up here, we don't use that term in Denmark — that's what I meant, polynomials.

  • d is for distance

  • s is from spatium (Latin).

    Cheers

  • Lmfao! What Hreinn91 said is actually kinna true, but the word he choses much like choosing speed is just another word. The S does mean speed, and what happens that ruins mathematics is use of word. To put it another way, we said speed before we said displacement and someone just thought displacement fit more than saying speed. In fact, speed is not a mathematical word. Speed implies fast or slow, rate implies a measurement of speed. That is the distinction displacement clumsily implies.

  • Sal the Denuminator

  • Nono, no. His explanation for S as the displacement variable is all wrong. You use S because S is the first letter in the Swedish word for displacement: Sträcka. It is common knowledge that all math derive form Sweden and that Swedish people are generally not only more capable in Scientific fields but also more beautiful and we smell better then folks from other nations

  • @Hreinn91

Sträcka is distance, the word for displacement is förskjutning, and we don't really use F for displacement...sadly........but hey I actually loled at your second generalization so....Thx!!!

  • @Raysyedrocks it was not meant to be a factual statement

  • @Hreinn91 spammer

  • @Hreinn91 G force is for Gay force, so G force is related to acceleration and speed, and S is for super as Super man has an S on his shirt so S = super, therefore the Swedish = S G force, so Swedish = Super Gay Force

  • @H3llohi1 luckily I´m Icelandic ^^

  • @Hreinn91 Im guessing that ur blonde...

  • @H3llohi1 Yeah, I'm also being ironic but people dont seem to be getting that either

  • @Hreinn91 You are not being ironic. There is nothing ironic about what you have said. Why do people have such difficulty with the definition and use of irony; it's misused all the time.

  • @OscillatingRhythms It was not meant to be a factual statement = )

  • @Hreinn91 Yes, I can see that, that doesn't mean it's ironic.

  • @OscillatingRhythms You are quite insistence :P The definition of being ironic in this context means that you are conveying the opposite point to what you actually are making. Soooo yes I was being ironic. If you disagree please point out more specifically where :þ

  • @Hreinn91 Quite insistence?! I think you'll find the word you are looking for is insistent. Please don't try to lecture me on irony when you have such a poor grasp of the English language. I am perfectly aware of the definition of irony in its many forms. Just because you make a statement which you don't intend to be taken literally, it doesn't necessarily follow that the statement is ironic. If i say a dog has two tails, even though I know it doesn't, that statement in itself is not ironic.

  • @OscillatingRhythms Come on, my grasp of the English language isn't that bad. You'd have much better luck communicating with me rather then most of my fellow countrymen. I like you, you seem like a nice guy :)

But since the topic is irony, don't you find it ironic that I'm trying to lecture you in English where as you clearly are a native :3

  • @Hreinn91

that is realy racist u know i am an australian and i whould not mind saying that some countries are beter in som feilds

  • @DAVIDKOTLYAR I'm not at all racist I was just trying to be funny and fact of the matter is that not in fact born Swedish nor am I especially nationalistic. Much luv to you Kangaroo ppl <3

  • @Hreinn91 your mom was great last night

  • @nurchowdhury5 have some respect dude...

  • @DoomDude20101 your mom was just as great, if not better

  • Did everyone know that he is sponsored by Bill Gates?

  • do heat please (physics) !!!!!!!!

  • D is also used for diameter

  • omfg physics videos are back!!! will you do more on electricity and magnetism? Maxwell's equations perhaps? PLEASE!

  • d is also used for distance, that's one possible explanation, even though vectors have the arrows over the letter.

  • "...by having hours in the de-num-inator."

  • great video. thanks

  • Hey Sal, could you do a video on E. Coli bacteria?

  • Thx for the vids sal.

Everything looks penng on the super amoled screen on galaxy s. The blacks and colours like vibrant.:-)

  • I personally would have chosen a more realistic example. 5 km/h is barely walking speed. ;)

  • I am so glad you use the black backround. This "google eye-blind white" color drives me crazy.

  • Thanks a lot for redoing these videos Sal. Coincidently, I was just studying this (using the old videos). So this is a bit more practice for me. :>

  • i think i'm gunna throw up happiness from all ur videos!!!
