Who cares who was out first. Madonna and Jody are BOTH legends. period. And NO new females artists could compare. Though this is a cover and I like Madonna's more THIS is really like a new song which is what a cover should be. Jody has made this her OWN!
@TheNouveauxdecadence I agree with you 100% and I think this has a lot less pop and more mature emotion I love both songs her's and Madonna's my 9 year old likes this one better LOL!
Both versions Madonna and Jody's are incredible and sung with such feeling. I never really absorbed the lyrics until i heard this slower version. Amazing.
To say that a person that, a black person that alters their appearance is not proud of their ethnicity is not true. To say that it is done to look more westernized is humorous. Are white entertainers that have the same procedures performed, not proud of their heritage as a caucasian? Are they trying to look more "Westernized?" Some people have alterations performed simply because they feel it will enhance the beauty they already possess...nothing more, nothing less.
Well said. But I do believe there aare ppl that may do it to look more look like another culture. Such as Michael Jackson. But on the whole ppl have cosmetic procedures to enhance thier looks or to make them feel better!!
@76discodolly I agree. Michael's skin color definitely lightened over the years. There has been some debate as to whether it was due to a skin disease or by choice. The other facial surgery he had performed, suggests he wanted the features of caucasians. Many caucasians sit long hours in the sun and in tanning beds to darken their skin color. People see different looks or styles on others and sometimes choose to adopt them. Those changes are accepted unless they cross culture--then it's taboo.
I sun bathe in the summer time b/c I like the look of a golden tan on me. But that is not an indication that I want to look like another culture. I am very proud to be Latina. Black women get hair extentions not b/c they want to look white but b/c its is complimentary. But I do agree with you smoothiota.
@76discodolly And that's my point, exactly. Most people do it simply because they like the particular look on them. It's not done to look like people of another culture or to deny their own.
@smoothiota4 So what. Very few whites look good without any sun. Besides, we get Vit D from the sun. Whites are NOT trying to look black, trust me. Getting your nose thinned out like LaToya and MJ is not a sign of slight alterations but of wanting to achieve a look that is comparable to white standards of beauty. Last time I checked, I didn't see lines of white women getting nose surgery to get wider, broader nostrils and flatter bridges. It's usually people of color wanting that "refinement".
@cjs33139 You must not have read my comment because I stated that due to the other facial surgeries Michael had performed, suggested he wanted the features of caucasians. My statement on caucasians tanning was made to show that when people make changes to their appearance, it does not necessarily mean that they want to look like members of another race or ethnic group.
@cjs33139 As for your last two statements, whites spend astronomical amounts of money on cosmetic surgeries and tanning. That too, would be considered, as you say, "refinement.", and contrary to your suggestion, blacks are not lining up to get their features changed to look likes whites. Kinky hair, broad noses, thick lips, and dark skin are all characteristics of BLACK BEAUTY.
@smoothiota4 White women spend money on facelifts to retain their youth, because of the stigma of against aging directed mostly at women. When they get rhinoplasty, they are merely wanting to attain the "Barbie" pixie small-featured ideals that the media pushes. And it has also crossed over to blacks too, but if you don't think that our Eurocentric media that identifies beauty as small, narrow nosed, straight hair (weaves, hello?) doesn't affect us, you are deluded. It did me, unfortunately.
@cjs33139 Your "Eurocentric media" does not dictate nor define beauty. You and some others may choose to, but trust me, I and many others like me, do not. Black and Latino women are probably the most beautiful the world has ever seen. With their fine figures and beautiful smooth brown skin that is wrinkle resistant ... they are the envy of many women all around the globe. And that's FOR REAL!!!
@smoothiota4 That's fine for you and for the few that love black/latina women with natural curly hair and full noses and lips, but the reality is that blacks folks occasionally still are brainwashed to think Eurocentric is more beautiful. I hope you do realize that. Just the other day, a black young woman on here was dissing Rihanna's wide nose, saying she should have gotten it "fixed" and it shocked me. R is beautiful, just as she is, but even people of color are victims of this thinking.
stop generalizing. there are those, too, who are very proud of there afrocentricity. stop letting the (euro) media brainwash/bleach/whiten (your mind) you--dumby!
@smoothiota4 As for the Western media not influencing beauty standards around the world, you are in denial. India has ads for skin whiteners, eyelid surgery in Asia, Rhino in Iran (nosejob capital), denial & even demonization of African heritage in the Caribbean (I am PR), even from people with obvious African heritage... comments such as "bad hair" in PR, marrying lighter skinned men to "better the race", etc. This thinking exists sadly among a lot of blacks/latinos, just maybe not YOU.
@cjs33139 I don't deny that the Western media plays a major influence on many people's idea of beauty. That standard is based not so much on Westerners characteristics as they are "Hollywood's." Hollywood has influenced some blacks to their standard just as they have whites. If a very narrow nose or very thin figure are white features, why do so many of them have to have to diet and have surgery to achieve them? They are brainwashed to that standard of thinking, as are some blacks.
but white women are trying to get asses as well as hips and lips (curves) if that´s indictive of african women. let´s not forget tanning. what´s the point of white people tanning? perms? white people sport dread locks, today!
@smoothiota4 I don't agree. Sorry. As someone of color, mixed black & latino, I had a few surgeries ONLY because I had a wide "non-refined" nose, hated my ethnic features as a child & was driven to BDD. Michael had BDD & it's a real disease. When whites do it, they are merely living up to THEIR limited view of beauty, refined, thin, small waisted. Hence why Anorexia is so huge among white women. When blacks have surgery, most of the time it is to live up to a western standard of beauty.
I just want to add, that after years of denying my racial heritage and finally viewing myself as beautiful just the way I am, that I came to read feminist literature (I am a man) and most of their views on patriarchal and racist origins of our current standards of beauty resonated with me. We have residual self esteem issues from slavery days still, viewing ourselves as ugly still, instead of valuing our differences: wider features. Too bad it took me a long time to realize WE ARE BEAUTIFUL.
And smoothiota, if you don't agree with me, just go to Asia and see how much eyelid surgery is HUGE there, and rhinoplasty, in order to get a nasal bridge surgically implanted on their noses, to get a high bridge... and it is NOT to look like us blacks... guess who they are trying to emulate? Why in India, skin whiteners are sold by the bucket loads, in the Dominican Republic, women of obvious heritage DENY fiercely they are black (and not Haitian) and view black as equal to ugly, nappy hair.
This is how you cover a song. You let the melody breathe, you inject new life into it (but without overwhelming the essence of the song) and then you sing the hell out of it. A great song to begin with and an amazing cover.
SHe breathe new life into that song. At first I was like a Madonna cover? whatever! but from the first couple notes I knew, No this ain't no Madonna cover. This is some serious singing. ITs just lovely.
Yo Jody still holding her essence that is purely the bomb....we need some more real talented singers like Jody to get these kids in line, or we will all be going loosing our minds, on that boderline, Jody say hello to Michele if your read this...MCBEE Zulu One (Mele Mels Crew)
see I like this video better than the version that Madonna did so long ago. In this version, the music is slowed down and the lyrics seem to have more of a sensual meaning.
A very nice remake of this song. It has a nice soulful vibe. I love the sound of rain in the background. Frankly, I prefer this version to the original!
seriously the best rendition of this song. i see that some peeps arent for it, well you dont get it then, lol. she's showing how vulnerable she is and was. being taken for a fool makes you feel stripped of everything you are. im just now getting my skin back from the abuse i had endured. cause love is blind and it can make you feel like your losing your mind. i love it and jody's the shizzle for remaking it. KUDOS!
@stay201 You got it all wrong Jody was around long before Madonna. Jody came out in the 70's with a group called Shalamar and has being strong ever since. She is one of the original divas. Madonna has been taking pointers from her.
@wwaynmanp you've got that wrong, Madonna only started two years after Jody. i don't think two years is enough to say either one gave the other pointers. They are peers.
I love Jody Watley. One of the few black entertainers who didn't succumb to the whole rhinoplasty temptation in order to appear more "refined" and Westernized, like all the others: Aaliyah, Patti Labelle, Stephanie MIlls, MJ and the rest of the Jacksons, Salt from SaltnPepa, the list goes on and on. Jody is proud of her ethnicity and facial features, unlike many rich black celebrities these days who sell out. I love you Jody. You are still as beautiful as you were in the 80s.
@cjs33139 I don't believe Aaliyah did any alterations to her face, if you look at her child photos she looks the same to me, as far as Jody, she didn't need to do anything, even if she felt she did(I don't feel anyone she alter their face, they should be happy/proud of themselves)...if you look at those beautiful cheekbones and all she is put together fine! :)
@MsFGrace11 i agree, Aaliyah is part naitive american and not 100% black anyway, i dont think she had any surgery, her 1st album dropped when she was 14, how much surgury would she have had even at that point...? she always looked the same
but damn girl, wish u coulda rocked that wig double's hair for the whole vid, dem curlz lookin lovely in the beginning. did the humidity level in the studio jump at :42 sceonds? where them curls went? hold up, they're back again @ 2:01 looks like it's just a depth of field thing lemme step off.
well listened to this video last night for the first time before I went to bed and woke up this morning with it in my head. Well done Jody...good material for you.
Jody's version of ''Borderline'' is more soulful, intimate and mature. Jody's version shows major growth in her career. Great Adult Contemporary song. It should have charted on the A/C chart.
This is off of her 'makeover' album and Jody performs this song with true beauty and style. Jody is an artist of immense talent and she been around for three decades now at the top. Still producing records today.
Just fyi to twiliterider, back in the Sinatra days, everyone used to sing everyone elses songs. I think its great to see all these original takes on one song. I love this version, so soulful!
AUGH! What is the deal? Every singer is covering other singer's songs nowadays. That's sad. The original by Madonna was much better. I wish singers would come up with new songs and not cover anyone elses!!!
Originaldeftom you must be kidding. Unemotional? What are you a cactus? Ummmm mature and you'll recognize. It's not all about dance songs and don't comment on someone who has a grammy and talent when your ass can't prob sing a lick. Dumber!
While I love Jody's dance tracks, esp her collabos with M.A.W. and Morales, I find this version very bland and unemotional. I mean, she is not exactly a vocal sensation, is she?
This is a wonderful version of Madonna's original. The tempo and vocals are just wonderful. This is a " listen to on a date" ride home song...You can definitely get a kiss from a hairy bear if you wanted..i know i do......
With all do respect, I love jody, she still look's good, she still sound's great, but, the original collaboration with Nile Rogers and madonna is still my favorite hand's down.
Correction...Madonna did not produce this song with Nile Rodgers-the didn't starting working together until the "Like A Virgin session. "Borderline" was both composed and produced by Reggie Lucas. The 7" Version, 12" Version & Dub Version were remixed by John "Jellybean" Benitez, Madonna's then-boyfriend.
Actually the collaboration was with musician/music producer Reggie Lucas. Not Nile Rodgers. Nile Rodgers produced the album ''Like A Virgin'' in 1984.
Pardon me, The like a virgin albulm is what i was talking about in collaboration. My memory failed me thinking borderline was on that albulm. Thank's for the research.
Timeless...Ageless...Unforgetable. Always a classic style and grace. Nice to know some people have evolved but never deviate from themselves. Love ya Jo-Jo.
Damn - never knew Miss Jody covered this cut. So hot and whatta beautiful video. What a nice version - its as good as the original because its sound is on a different tip. I'm feelin it! Love that Duffy did it too - its a bomb song. Borderline - feels like I'm going to lose my mind... Amen!

@Jaggabone not a comeback attempt love - an artistic progression.

Yes, is it artistic progression! Educate those who have missed the mark!

Forever and always the smooth DIVA. Fashion-wise, musically - go mama! Very smooth take on this great Madonna cut.

Wow......I would not even reconize Jody. She doesn't look like herself. I cannot believe 25yrs she never got her bottom grill fixed.

This was around when her friend Doug died. He was a trainer on that reality show, cant remember the name. Also, I never did find out what he died of.

Jody's version of ''Borderline'' is more soulful, intimate and mature. Jody's version shows major growth in her career. Great Adult Contemporary song. It should have charted on the A/C chart.

i love jody watley, but i am also a huge huge madonna fan, so i do prefer the original madonna version. but have to admit that jw did a good job!!!

This is off of her 'makeover' album and Jody performs this song with true beauty and style. Jody is an artist of immense talent and she been around for three decades now at the top. Still producing records today.

Jody did a cool job on this song. More mature and personal. Her cd is very good. I like when she did the Chic remake I Want Your Love on the cd also.

i'd never heard this remake before. thanks for sharing.

In my book there are just the two artists that can go way with doing covers: Whitney Houston, Troop and, yes, Jody Watley. Enough said!!!

This version is actually pretty damn good.

Just fyi to twiliterider, back in the Sinatra days, everyone used to sing everyone elses songs. I think its great to see all these original takes on one song. I love this version, so soulful!
BigZeeEnn 2 years ago 3
I love this version as much as the original. Jody adds a mature feel to the song without taking anything away from it.
celtee66 2 years ago 2
Nice cover.
LoseWeightWithBrandy 2 years ago
AUGH! What is the deal? Every singer is covering other singer's songs nowadays. That's sad. The original by Madonna was much better. I wish singers would come up with new songs and not cover anyone elses!!!
twiliterider 2 years ago
Thank you for your research Harajuku, but, I'm speaking on the song but on the albulm in collaboration.

Originaldeftom you must be kidding. Unemotional? What are you a cactus? Ummmm mature and you'll recognize. It's not all about dance songs and don't comment on someone who has a grammy and talent when your ass can't prob sing a lick. Dumber!
sabbax35 2 years ago
While I love Jody's dance tracks, esp her collabos with M.A.W. and Morales, I find this version very bland and unemotional. I mean, she is not exactly a vocal sensation, is she?

This is a wonderful version of Madonna's original. The tempo and vocals are just wonderful. This is a " listen to on a date" ride home song...You can definitely get a kiss from a hairy bear if you wanted..i know i do......

With all do respect, I love jody, she still look's good, she still sound's great, but, the original collaboration with Nile Rogers and madonna is still my favorite hand's down.
district644 3 years ago 2
Correction...Madonna did not produce this song with Nile Rodgers-the didn't starting working together until the "Like A Virgin session. "Borderline" was both composed and produced by Reggie Lucas. The 7" Version, 12" Version & Dub Version were remixed by John "Jellybean" Benitez, Madonna's then-boyfriend.
Harajuku75 2 years ago 2
Actually the collaboration was with musician/music producer Reggie Lucas. Not Nile Rodgers. Nile Rodgers produced the album ''Like A Virgin'' in 1984.
1musicencyclopedia 2 years ago
Pardon me, The like a virgin albulm is what i was talking about in collaboration. My memory failed me thinking borderline was on that albulm. Thank's for the research.

Amen!
