@CrimsonRGU I don't think he had to, but there were only two empty positions, so he would have had to take one that was already filled by a piece. It was probably the easiest to ride a horse as a knight than any other chess piece.

@CrimsonRGU  I actually looked closely at that moment because originally I thought the queen stabbed near where his legs were. It actually stabbed near the juncture of the neck and body (which was fairly high up as the horse was rearing). The force of the blow and the resultant shatter, as well as fear, most likely dislodged him and he fell to the wayside, pieces falling about him.

@svenske71 If Ron jumped off the Horse before the Queen hit him, it would count as cheating or a forfeit. Like Harry and Hermione, he has become a chess peice in the game, and must abid by its rules and be taken, otherwise getting off would be a forfeit. It's like how Hermione tried to see if Ron was alright, but Harry stopped her because if she left her square, it would count as a move.

@THX256 Because he's the chess piece. Technically, in the book, there was no horse chess piece that he climbed onto. It was just him, the way Harry was ACTUALLY one of the bishops and Hermione was ACTUALLY one of the Queen's rooks. But probably, since Ron was directing all of the chess pieces, it was a better camera angle if Columbus had him on the horse.

That would count as a foul move and his side would forfeit the whole game. All his side's pieces would be taken, King , Harry, ...

He couldn't concede the game like that to save himself temporarily.

In the book there WAS no horse. Ron actually got slugged in the head by the white queen's fist. I'm guessing that on screen it didn't seem credible that he would survive a blow like that, so they gave him something to take the hit. Notice how he was the only human taken, and he was the only human with a 'steed'
