I am fascinated by the fact that some Germans have difficulty making the sound "v" as in the word "verb" when speaking English. They use this sound constantly when speaking German in words like 'werden', 'verboten', etc. I wonder what the linguistic explanation for it is, if there is one.
@wojtek0000 the english v is a fricative, while in german, and even Finnish the v is an approximant. The English v manner of articulation is fricative, which means it is produced by constricting air flow through a narrow channel at the place of articulation, causing turbulence. Whereas the German v's manner of articulation is approximant, which means it is produced by narrowing the vocal tract at the place of articulation, but not enough to produce a turbulent airstream. Thus the difference.

Wow, it's pratically the same in Italian! We say "Io ho fame" that litterally means "Ich habe Hunger"
FemaleAyase 2 weeks ago
@FemaleAyase It's also the same in Spanish ("Yo tengo hambre").
QuesterLEJ 1 week ago
@QuesterLEJ And you can also say "I'm hungry" as "Estoy hambriento" in Spanish.

@Gumms97 Yes, you are completely right. She should have used another example or said that there are two possible translations for that specific case.
