Quite exquisite ! For me too, Max Ophüls was the best director ever. It's such a shame that several of his films are virtually impossible to get on dvd, but, thankfully, a handful can be had, including his superb documentary on France during WW2, "The Sorrow and the Pity."
Of course Kubrick was influenced by Ophüls. Stanley was smart. He was also a great, if not the greatest, American film director. If only more current directors were as influenced as Kubrick.
thats what all directors want inside is outside and vice versa and only one achieved it! not even monsieur kubrick, who stole from max ophüls like crazy lol
so true man, kubrik stole the shit out of max, godard too..but godard aproached max's natural flow of images & feelings on a more naturalistic & effective way than kubrik with le mepris...in the apartment scene the camera work was flawless & wasnt an intruder between the characters, more like max's style. kubrik was GREAT but sometimes the camera felt too forced to interact with those AWFUL acting style on his films, the result was more like an industrial film rather than the natural flow of images
I don't see teh similarity between those two directors. I guess they did like to move the camera around a lot

In France, half the poupulation hates Godard and the other half do not understand^^
And the New wave; she was helped the strange cinéma in but she was mortally wounded the french cinéma. A great disaster for us.
