Senna wasn't really a racing driver: he was a philosopher, a thinker who had the ability to express, in almost a godly but always intimate way, his concepts about human life, personal growth and ultimately, death, by driving a racing car to the limit. Far from deifying him, this is what truly makes him an outstanding human being.
Never use those two names in the one sentence together please. Very much disrespectful to someone who was the greatest at something as opposed to the garbage they churn out nowadays.
There is perhaps no more interesting figure in all of sport history than Ayrton Senna, even after almost 20 years, we still are learning more about the man
I remember watching Senna as a racer on ESPN. When he took the lead I knew it was a race for second. Understand, some people drive a car to race. Senna didn't drive his car to race. The other drivers were racing. Senna was winning, period. Once again, people drive to race. They were racing. Not Senna. Aryton Senna was winning every single turn, period.
@jalpafett ...so true - Senna was racing against himself. As his good friend Gerhard Berger said, "The only thing that existed was himself - and he had to be first."
The music is "Do Not Take Another Man's Wife (Part 1)" from the sound track of the film Three Colours Red which was composed by the Polish writer Zbigniew Priesner
@chrishampton1981 Thank you for the reply but that song you named is the one in used in this video when Ayrton is being air lifted to hospital in the helicopter, not you can see him driving round monaco and trying to squeeze Prost into the pit wall.
Ah, sorry about that. May have got a bit mixed up there. Am not sure what the music is when you have the moment of Senna almost pushing Prost into the pitwall at Estoril.

I always try to search videos in youtube so i can bring back the feelings i had in the 80 and 90 when i used to watch his victories in F1. not one video, Tv or spectator, shows Senna steering into the turn. His wheels continue straight of track. The video doesn't lie. And it all shows the same thing. The steering column broke at the weld. Ergo, Nat Geo and Williams are lying and or blind
@IExposeMormonism it would have happened so fast that you wouldn't see much... you can see the twitch from Schumachers onboard pretty clearly... subtle but clearly
@Bryan2799 I've seen the footage and there is spectator footage. It all shows the same thing, it must, it's the same event. There is no steering into the slide. no oversteer. the car goes off track. Period. Nat Geo and and Williams are obfuscating. the steering column broke. Also, there is no reason for Senna's camera to go blank Before he hits the wall, yet it does stop.
@IExposeMormonism it goes blank because the Formula 1 world feed switched on board cameras... they did that back then...
the steering in to the slide may have taken a tenth or two... a normal human blink is about that...
I'm not saying the steering column couldn't have broken... but there are several things that could have happened and the National Geographic (among others) scenario is plausible...
@IExposeMormonism oh and where is the spectator footage? I've seen one were the guy is sitting up on the exit of Tosa looking down and you just see the aftermath... if there is another can you send a link?
Also and "slide" and "correction" at that speed would be very quick and the slide would not look like much at that speed. Also keep in mind the width of the track and the speed he is going. If he corrected what he thought was a slide and turned to far right there would be no chance...
@Bryan2799 I don't have a link, just type in some words and maybe you'll find a couple of videos. Nat Geo and Williams say he steers into the slide, the back end steps out. Caused by the car scraping the ground. All non sense. I don't care what speed he was going, if he steered into the turn we should see and we don't see any such thing. And the car scraping the ground is less than irrelevant, they scrape the ground all the time.
@IExposeMormonism scraping the ground at 310km/h is not irrelevant... especially when loaded up in the corner... it always upsets the car. Even when you look at Schumacher's on board you can see the wheel saw in his hands when he hits that part of the track.
Glad YOU don't care what speed he was going... but it does matter... And if he hit the bump hard enough then it could have done a lot to the car and if he flicked the steer an half a inch to far or too early he could have gone off...
@Bryan2799 I've watched zillions of hours of F1. Including scraping in turns. It's very common. And it contributed not at all to the Senna accident. Senna didn't loose control of the car. He does not steer into the slide. The back end does not step out. The video ends prior to his hitting the wall. Yet the statements of Williams suffice to over ride the video that exists both in the car and from spectators, all of which, of course is consistent.
@IExposeMormonism sorry I guess you are an expert... I will defer to your expertise...
I assume you've been in a car that has bottomed out at speed then? We aren't talking just "scraping" we are talking full on hard contact with the ground...
Well I mean you've watched zillions of hours of F1 and have watched the video (on board at 24 fps) so if you don't see it then it didn't happen...
Oh and the spectator footage... as long as YOU say it exists.. who am I to argue...
@Bryan2799 What makes Nat Geo the ultimate frame of reference? There are so called experts in every field that disagree. Why should I be under a compulsion of expert witnesses? In a court of law a jury can find either way, or not reach a verdict. I watch the video, I disagree. I don't have to sit in a F1, I can watch hours of scraping F1 cars. they do it all the time. And, no, I don't see what Nat Geo and Williams claims. And I'm not alone. And I'm right.. And you, too can believe what you will
@IExposeMormonism you say they are full of crap when they present a possible (and that is all it is) explanation for what happened... it is possible the steering column broke or was compromised in some way
But you dismiss it out of hand based only on what you think to see... it makes you a hack... you can believe what you want... it doesn't make you right...
And sorry dude... you have to at least sit in a racing car to know the difference between scraping and bottoming... it feels different
@Bryan2799 Sorry, dude, no one has to sit in a F1 car to make a call on the situation.. Not one juror was ever in a F1 car. And again, the experts disagree so I am under no compulsion to either side. I believe what I believe on the basis of viewing the video. Williams destroyed some of the computer data. that's real evidence. the video is evidence. I dismiss Nat Geo on the basis of the video. period paragraph end of report
@IExposeMormonism no one has to... but the ONLY other person who experienced what Senna did that weekend was Damon Hill... he doesn't think they steering column broke... he had to lift at that corner... and he was there...
@IExposeMormonism Williams didn't destroy any data - The Williams black box althophysically surviving the crash had it's power severed and the contents were lost. However the Renault black box was recovered and the data from that was used in the trial.
@dave41184 The most sophisticated car in the world and all that happened at once. I doubt it. In fact I've seen interviews/documentary stating certain Williams folks got right into the box prior to and F1 officials or "the law". The law was there because the law says in case of death there will be an investigation. Williams erased 2-3 seconds worth of info.
@IExposeMormonism Read Tom Rubython's book 'Senna' it gives an accurate account of both the accident and it's aftermath. The car was taken to the FIA garage where initally William's personal were denied entry and then only admitted to remove the boxes under supervision.
His crash and to do with the fact that the car bottomed out and lost its aerodynamic down force. If you in a fast left hander and you loose your downforce a 200 mph, well your not going to make the turn.
The Rainmaster, racing was lucky to have known you, the world was lucky to have watched you, maybe one day you will be the patron saint of driving in the rain. Balls to the wall, win or die, Senna was the man.
And if that Balestre was sent sabotage! I know there only argument anyone would disobey him understand more I think I sabotaged the car of senna and Balestre wanted to end his career some think!''To assist the documentario''Senna Asif I am Brazilian Kapadia is what is happening here!
Senna was one of a kind, he drove undriveable cars and won, that's how brilliant he was. Imagine if only he had the car that all drivers hope for, who knows how many championship he would of won, 7 8 9, unstoppable. ( RIP)
i think that being left handed has somthing to do with why he was so good an could cosentrate better than others left handed peoples brains are wired up diffrently to right handed people another great who is left handed is valentino rossi :)
Fantastic documentary. I will never forget May 1st 1994. A Formula 1 legend died that day. In my book the best ever. But we also must not forget Ronald Ratzenberger. He died a day earlier during qualifying. Man it was the worst Formula 1 weekend ever.
i remember seeing this when it was first shown... late at night (for me at 11 years old) in 1995... i actually remember my parents house, the bedroom, where the tv was and my bed.. and that i wasnt supposed to be up...odd... i dont remember my first day at school...
For the first 3 races of 1994 the FW16 was not a good car. It had a flaw, they had found the problem it was design flaw in the car's front end before Imola. They had not time to fix it before the race.
So putting it on pole and leading all 3 the first races was all Senna not the car.
@falmark187 your so right , fellowpetrol head as you say how he slams that car around monaco is pure skil or how the car respond to his spine,. and seeing them now you kinda wonder was he a jedi??
@tazio2 It wasknown as a bad handling car at the beginning of the year as it was prone to snap oversteer. Of course no one was better than Senna at handling the rear end of a car but nevertheless the 1994 Williams only got better towards the end of the year. I think 1994 would have gone to Schuey but 1995, 1996,1997 could well have gone to Senna had he stayed in shape.
The footage of Senna ramming his car around Monaco at the beginning is simply incredible - I remember watching this documentary on the bbc 14 years ago and I've never fogotten it.
The incredible thing is that although the 1994 Williams was a pig of a car he still managed to put it on pole in all 3 races he was alive for - against a young Schumacher. In my view if he had lived on he would still have been able to take care of Schuey for 2 or 3 more years.
My Uncle stopped watching F1 that day that Senna died. He used to love watching racing, but that was it. Till this day he never watches a race.

Fantastic documentary. I will never forget May 1st 1994. A Formula 1 legend died that day. In my book the best ever. But we also must not forget Ronald Ratzenberger. He died a day earlier during qualifying. Man it was the worst Formula 1 weekend ever.

For the first 3 races of 1994 the FW16 was not a good car. It had a flaw, they had found the problem it was design flaw in the car's front end before Imola. They had not time to fix it before the race.
So putting it on pole and leading all 3 the first races was all Senna not the car.
After Imola they fixed the front end and the
FW16 became a very good car.
So when Senna had it it was a "pig of a car"

@tazio2 It wasknown as a bad handling car at the beginning of the year as it was prone to snap oversteer. Of course no one was better than Senna at handling the rear end of a car but nevertheless the 1994 Williams only got better towards the end of the year. I think 1994 would have gone to Schuey but 1995, 1996,1997 could well have gone to Senna had he stayed in shape.

The footage of Senna ramming his car around Monaco at the beginning is simply incredible - I remember watching this documentary on the bbc 14 years ago and I've never fogotten it.

I know, compare that to onboard footage from todays F1 cars, it's incredible how they managed to finish the race in those days !

The incredible thing is that although the 1994 Williams was a pig of a car he still managed to put it on pole in all 3 races he was alive for - against a young Schumacher. In my view if he had lived on he would still have been able to take care of Schuey for 2 or 3 more years.
