Probie was the best - undisputed. I have to declare this a draw - but it was awesome to watch them fight and better yet to recognize each other's efforts with a light headbutt and a nod at the end.
@keith81081: Tim Horton would have given Probert a run as the toughest man in NHL history. Horton fought infrequently, but that's only because everyone in the league knew he was as strong as a bull. probert was a genuine tough guy, though, no doubt... and I'm a Blackhawks man from way back.
@GeorgiaBoy1961 Tim Horton was known to be crazy strong but was never known as a fighter. You have to fight to prove yourself and Tim almost never fought.
@SCROGY: It is true that Horton almost never fought... point taken... but then again, people knew that Horton wasn't to be messed with. That's a pretty darned good deterrent right there, someone people steer clear of on reputation alone. No one wanted to tangle with Horton, because everyone knew he was extremely strong and as tough as an ox. Probert is tough to top, but then, I am a Blackhawks man from way back...
@ECheGuevera yeah uhhhhhhhh no bob probert was put on this earth to break faces in the NHL he's the G.O.A.T of hockey fights, GO WINGS!! R.I.P Probert
@ECheGuevera Laraque only beat him because he was older when they fought, laraque is good but when he gets in a fight that he knows he cant win he wrestles instead of throwing punches. that's the only reason Boogaard didn't destroy him
@ECheGuevera in every fight he has with someone of equal or greater size, he'll throw a few light punches real quick then wrestle his opponent down, he has no stamina
@thekillers1stfan Agreed. As soon as Laraque starts to tire or the guy starts getting the best of him he throws the guy down so it looks like he won. He was a tough dude and a good fighter but prime Probert would beat him 9 times out of ten easy.
McSorley didnt get knocked down. I was watching on CBC and he tripped on the jersey that was on the ice. He didnt get 'rocked'. Win to McSorley. Ask Don Cheery about it.
@detroitchuckie Dude, he got clipped right in the face with that punch (the punch landed before Marty stumbled). Hell, Probert even let up on him and allowed Marty back in the fight TWICE. Bobby gave Marty TWO chances in this fight that he didn't have to give him. Marty was one of the best and one of the few with cardio to fight Bobby this long, but no way did he win this. At best a draw for Marty. I loved both guys but McSorley did NOT win this.
@keith81081 ESPN has certain "standards", I agree with you 100% Bob Probert was an all around player, it's just that he was used by the coaching staff as the enforcer, which limited his scoring, people need to understand, that in hockey, you need team unity, and a protector of that team unity!!! Love ya Probie!!!!
so tough to call. looked like it was going to be Probert with the McSorley knockdown, but McSorley was stronger at the end. So I'm going to call it a draw
this is proof that probert was a true professional. he didnt throw a punch when mcsorley had the jersey over his head. also when probert nearly KO'd mcsorley, he still let him up. they dont make em like they used to. to me the enforcer term died when domi retired.
@whitecloud1980 not many of the old school left, i like to think belak still holds to the gentlemans code of violence, but your right their arent too many others.
@keith81081 - I am a Flyers fan too...it would have been great to see him in a Philly uniform. But Dave Brown was no slouch either.Unfortunately, the fights between him and Probert were not the best.
I am reading Probert's autobiography 'Tough Guy' that just came out. I would highly reccommend it. He talks about his fights with McSorley and Domi and also tells people what he really thinks about Bettman, Stevie Y and the state of the game generally. He is very honest and pulls no punches (lol!)
@Boxingbear I'm getting that book! I grew up in Boston,I just wish I had gone to a game to watch Bob play.Notice the shoulder pads Mcsorley is wearing, looks like something I wore in peewees.Total respect for both.
A friend of mine played for the Leafs and fought Mcsorely. He said it was the stupidest thing he ever did.
Mad Props to Probert , but I love what they did @ the end of the fight there.
Something you don't see anymore is respect between fighters anymore if you can call them enforcers anymore. Don Cherry had it pegged right from the start that those 2 Hockey Enforcers were the last of the greats of enforcing
also, i'm tired of chicago fans chiming in all of the time about probert, and how he's a blackhawk. BOB PROBERT MADE A NAME FOR HIMSELF IN DETROIT, ALL OF HIS BIGGEST FIGHTS WERE IN DETROIT, HE WAS MOST FEARED AND IN HIS PRIME IN DETROIT, AND HE WILL ALWAYS BE A RED WING.
Could very well be the greatest fight in NHL history, when you take everything into account : the length of the fight, the respect that they had for one another, and this great era in a sport that has become way to soft on fighting. RIP Probie, any true fan of hockey will miss you.
I remember the day i saw this fight. I still consider it to be one of the best hockey fights ever. Both took and delivered some really good punishment.
Met him once, In a bar somewhere in "Ontario", and....he was a true gentleman, signed autographs for me and my Brother, and posed for pics for both of us..., "Thanks Bob!", you were the Best!.
I am the biggest McSorley fan. This fight is clearly 10-9 Probert, but hey, he's the greatest fighter in the history of the NHL. And Marty hung in there for almost 2 minutes and he got plenty of good shots in. I miss the days when the Kings played whatever team Bob was on, and you KNEW he and Marty were gonna go at some point. RIP Bob Probert
That's what makes the game, then and now, great. Great stuff at the end showing total respect Two warriors going at it and then showing admiration for each other's toughness.
I watched coverage of the funeral today on the news ....Probie's casket was attached to the side of a Harley, fans in Red Wing and Black Hawks jerseys lined the streets and rode bikes. It just shows how much of a well respected and stand up guy he was. He was soft-spoken, humble and treated people with respect...and he was also a bad-ass on the ice! He had demons, but don't we all...that's why he was loved and admired so much. He was like any other blue-collar guy.
@shamuswinston Almost a disappointment that there weren't fans wearing every jersey in the league to line the streets. Irrespective of your colours, Probert was universally respected by knowlegible hockey fans.
I say this as a hockey fan first, Pens' fan second: Modern hockey fans don't understand that there was a Code that these guys lived by. It was a job, and nearly all these guys respected each other outside of each fight. But when it came time to go to even a score or rock the crowd, it was these guys who answered the bell. This was, and is, Hockey. Rest In Peace, Bob Probert. Hopefully you're at your best forever, grinning when someone asks "You wanna go?"
When "24" & the Other worthy (McSorley, Domi, Crowder ect) enforcer stepped on the ice during one of those games where you knew that it was about to go down, accounted for The Most ELECTRIFIED Moments in Sports.
20,000 at the "Joe" immediately stand and go fucking nuts..... Then, when the gloves dropped..... There will Never be anything like it again.
Thanks to Bettman & his Euros & teams in Columbus & shit like that.
Thats what missing in hockey now is respect, at the end of the fight when they bump heads and show sportsmanship to each other for doing what they have to. Its not personal its business, both class guys. R.I.P Probert!!
I also like that when a ref grabbed Bob at the end of a fight, he would not struggle with the ref. It happened but a time or two, like when Stevie got jacked by a St. Louis player. But other than that, Bob respected the refs who broke up the fighs.
@MrsBrenda777 Go back to your milk and cookies and Santa Claus MrsBrenda. You're probably a soccer mom who thinks her kids are influenced by this stuff and hates fighting in hockey. Why are you even here? This is a hockey fight video. We don't invade your topics/videos on veganism and skirt making 101 or whatever the **** it is you do and post garbage. Stay the **** out.
I was at this game. It was great. No offence to the people that have a disdain about fighting, but this was classic Probert. He was the best at what he did. He had a role to play in hockey and he did his best to fulfill that role. I will always admire him for his kindness to his fans. He didn't have to talk to me after a game, but he did. I will always remember him for that with fondness.
I always like Kocur as a pound for pound guy. Probert had stamina, no doubt. Probably the best stamina fighter I have seen (28 yrs old). Probert wouldn't ever his as hard as Kocur, it appeared. I never actually took one to the face from them, so, who knows. I dont think Laraque is anything special. Or Mcsorley. Big boys, but nothing to crazy.
@MrUnclesam666 ROFL? are you kidding? Lucic is a pussy. The only enforcer he ever fought was Colton Orr and he got a broken nose and backed off asking the refs to break it up.
Lucic is a modern Cam Neely and one of the best power forwards in the league, but if lucky he might crack the top 50 best fighters in the league.
What A Fucking Fight!! Watching it again, I had to give these two guys a standing ovation. Both men went shot for shot, Probert & McSorley landed shots that rocked staggered each other - Gotta Love It! This Fight Was Too Close To Call: Maybe Probert slight edge for landing more bigger shots (especially early in the fight); Then again McSorley was far more consistent with his punches & was stronger towards the end (Including staggering Probert at the 1:37 mark). Awesome Fight. This One's A Draw.
I like when Probert rubs the top of McSorley's head showing good sportsmanship and respect for each other and of course entertaining the fans. Great fight it was and I watched that entire game too...
The way you said it, it looked like you were literally blaming the new technology. Obviously that wasn't the case, but next time blame the fact that fighting isn't the same.
Oh I understood it. I'm just saying the fact that you mentioned today's fights are in HD was irrelevant. When you bring that factor into your comment, it's like saying "Bettman's an asshole AND he has a belly button!" lol
No, I said I'd rather watch a REAL fight in shitty resolution than a Bettman fight in HD. I don't know how else I need to explain it. The horse was dead 4 posts ago.
Bad Bob Probert chipped my front tooth and put 7 stitches in my chin.

Big boys, but nothing to crazy.

i wonder if mcsorley in his prime could handle lucic blow for blow that would be a fucken brawl
MrUnclesam666 1 year ago
@MrUnclesam666
you wonder?...lol
if lucic was ever in that long of a bout, he'd end up puking all over the front of himself half way though it....twerp....lol
huntercalgary 1 year ago
@huntercalgary I wouldve loved to see Georges Laraque give McSorley a beat down.

Classic maratonbattle.
Probert landed better usually, knocking McSorley to the ice middle of the fight.
Closer to draw than clear win Probert.
I had call it EDGE B.Probert.

Great fight it was and I watched that entire game too...

sure, this fight was probably entertaining in its day, but with all due respect, 2 frames a second doesn't do it for me anymore.
pyropotato1 2 years ago 3
I'll take this fight at 2 frames a second as opposed to the "fights" today in HD. Bettman NHL ftl.
darkknight91 2 years ago
@darkknight91
What does it matter if they're in HD? I'd love to see two fighters as good as Probert and McSorley fight in HD.
cronin098 1 year ago
I think you missed the point. If there's a Probert or McSorley fight in HD, you let me know.
darkknight91 1 year ago
@darkknight91
The way you said it, it looked like you were literally blaming the new technology. Obviously that wasn't the case, but next time blame the fact that fighting isn't the same.
cronin098 1 year ago
Uh...I think that's exactly what I did, hence the term "fighting" in quotes. Seems everyone got it, except you.
darkknight91 1 year ago
@darkknight91
Oh I understood it. I'm just saying the fact that you mentioned today's fights are in HD was irrelevant. When you bring that factor into your comment, it's like saying "Bettman's an asshole AND he has a belly button!" lol
cronin098 1 year ago
No, I said I'd rather watch a REAL fight in shitty resolution than a Bettman fight in HD. I don't know how else I need to explain it. The horse was dead 4 posts ago.
