@DontClickOurURL the Afghan National Army is still brand new and msot of thema re conscripts. The ANA soldiers are poorly trained; since the advisors have little time to train them. Canadian and American troops have all the time they need back home; they're not the ones whose countries are always in turmoil.

What is also appalling is ANA soldier in the first scene that just holds his weapon down, while the Canadian next to him is holding it with intent of use and readiness.

@Gramra I've done some research, the ANA, isn't exactly the most loyal and professional army in the world. Many go AWOL, many are undisciplined, and most recently, a ANA soldier who was turned by the Taliban killed 4 Brits and a few of his fellow ANA and ran.
@iamidiotic There are several reasons for this. Low pay (The Taliban actually pays more I hear), widespread drug addiction, inferior equipment, language issues (Both with their ISAF allies and other Afghan soldiers), and of course some of them are Taliban spies..
@iamidiotic I believe that The West has already forsaken the idea of a stable, democratic Afghanistan. That may have worked...if we had 10x more troops and were there for another 15 years. Instead, I believe that the war will be downsized...It will be waged with special forces, drone strikes, and most prominently anti-Taliban Afghan elements.
@Gramra To my surprise, since the invasion has significantly downsized the number of Taliban existing, it used to be some 45,000 members, now its somewhere in the mid 20's. If we do leave, it will be unstable without a doubt, but I honestly think with a little bit more funding and heart, this will work out. The ANA has made a substantial improvement, its bought about 90 Mi-35s, purchased our excess M16A2's, getting M113s and APCs alike, etc. I'd see a good improvement a good chance of winning.

There's also economic development, political stability, reconciliation, negotiations with the surrounding powers (India/Russia/China/Pakistan/Iran). Ideally, there would be some kind of power-sharing agreement between the four ethnic groups (Tajiks, Hazaras, Uzbeks, Pashtuns) and the Afghans could use all that mineral wealth..
@Gramra Yeah, winning the ethnic groups hearts hasn't been exactly successful. Many have been turned by the Taliban. It runs like a deadly cancer, the Taliban seek and attack from the inside to destroy infrastructure. Control, emphasizes a lot of how we can win this war. While improvements have been made, Afghanistan isn't exactly in shape to run this war without us. I would expect the ISAF and friends in Afghanistan for at least another 5-10 years before anything is stable.

@DontClickOurURL the Afghan National Army is still brand new and msot of thema re conscripts. The ANA soldiers are poorly trained; since the advisors have little time to train them. Canadian and American troops have all the time they need back home; they're not the ones whose countries are always in turmoil.

@Gramra Nah, its a LAV III used by the Canadians, its very much similar to the LAV-25 the Marine Corps use.
What is also appalling is ANA soldier in the first scene that just holds his weapon down, while the Canadian next to him is holding it with intent of use and readiness.

@Gramra I've done some research, the ANA, isn't exactly the most loyal and professional army in the world. Many go AWOL, many are undisciplined, and most recently, a ANA soldier who was turned by the Taliban killed 4 Brits and a few of his fellow ANA and ran.

@iamidiotic There are several reasons for this. Low pay (The Taliban actually pays more I hear), widespread drug addiction, inferior equipment, language issues (Both with their ISAF allies and other Afghan soldiers), and of course some of them are Taliban spies..

@iamidiotic I believe that The West has already forsaken the idea of a stable, democratic Afghanistan. That may have worked...if we had 10x more troops and were there for another 15 years. Instead, I believe that the war will be downsized...It will be waged with special forces, drone strikes, and most prominently anti-Taliban Afghan elements.

@Gramra To my surprise, since the invasion has significantly downsized the number of Taliban existing, it used to be some 45,000 members, now its somewhere in the mid 20's. If we do leave, it will be unstable without a doubt, but I honestly think with a little bit more funding and heart, this will work out. The ANA has made a substantial improvement, its bought about 90 Mi-35s, purchased our excess M16A2's, getting M113s and APCs alike, etc. I'd see a good improvement a good chance of winning.

@iamidiotic But as has established before, victory in Afghanistan, were it to be reached, is far more complex than merely making sure the ANA has armored vehicles. There's also economic development, political stability, reconciliation, negotiations with the surrounding powers (India/Russia/China/Pakistan/Iran). Ideally, there would be some kind of power-sharing agreement between the four ethnic groups (Tajiks, Hazaras, Uzbeks, Pashtuns) and the Afghans could use all that mineral wealth..

@Gramra Yeah, winning the ethnic groups hearts hasn't been exactly successful. Many have been turned by the Taliban. It runs like a deadly cancer, the Taliban seek and attack from the inside to destroy infrastructure. Control, emphasizes a lot of how we can win this war. While improvements have been made, Afghanistan isn't exactly in shape to run this war without us. I would expect the ISAF and friends in Afghanistan for at least another 5-10 years before anything is stable.
