As a beginning dancer myself, I salute all the women AND men who perform the art of belly dancing. Everytime I watch one of these clips, it reminds me to keep practicing and makes me truly appreciate a culture I wasn't even aware of a year ago ^_^
I do not care what others have said. He dances with masuclinty, other male belly dancer,I could confuse them with women, He certianly sets it out that he is a male. And even if he is a little fast, but he certainly uses masculity. Men and women belly dancers have the same concepts to start. BUt I certainly must say that you, shiva, have a good dancer skills. Truley astounnding.
Wow! On e veil is difficult to handle - two is more than difficult. His dancing is controlled and positvely amazing! Kudos to a fantastic Middle Eastern Dancer!!!!!!!!!
Great performance and wonderful to see the male bellydancers out there sharing their skills! Some beautiful transgender performers too (well, I'm not bad!) and the famous Noor of Morocco- amazing performer, teacher, wonderful person and friend too. It really is an art and enjoyment we ALL can share. Thanks again! x
not bad for a male? Are u aware of how prominent men are in raqs sharki. I don't think that would go down well with the likes of Mahmoud reda, tito,Mo Gadawi or even kazafy.
hummm... samir, every professional dancer has their own style and while i believe dancing slow is great, in dance there must be a reason for everything you do... so if hes dancing fast, there is a reason.. a feeling he wants to convey, where as if he were dancing slow it would not be the same feeling. also remember the tempo of the song. pretty fast. you can not dance slow to a fast song. and in my opinion this dancer concentrates a lot on his movements... we must be seeing different vids lol
I don't comment specifically on his dance ability because I am not a dancer and have no basis for assessment. However, as a drummer, I believe he was "dancing so fast" because the rhythm given to him was fast. Especially at the beginning. Don't be too critical. There were other parts where the tempo went faster but he maintained a slow controlled rhythm. A good dancer knows how to take a rhythm and break it down from 2/4 to 4/4, essentially dancing in slow motion if desired.
Samir, I'm m not sure if you are a professional dancer or not, but Shiva is one of Australia's premier Male orienal dancers, and he is twirling the veil and his body fast because the rythm is fast. If you nderstand Ra'as sharki, you realise that you have to follow the music, either fast or slow or medium rythm/melody...
I agree with helenblondelTV - each dancer is trying to covery something different, and if you kept it simple (in 2010) you would have to be Souheir Zaki to be entertaining, thats why dancers use a varety of moves
@samirfouad1 Okay so you evidently have no idea about bellydancing if you can't differentiate between a "cape" and a "veil". Shiva is amazing, I've seen him so many times live & have worshipped him for years. Once, he pulled me up to dance with him at a restaurant. His individual movements stand out perfectly fine, it's just hard to see in a relatively low definition video. He lacks no control of his body. In fact if you saw how his body (omg especially the stomach) flowed, you'd gasp too.
seriously one of the best male belly dancers out there...he still looks like a man!! plz plz come to america lool u would so give a shock to the arab community here lool
:-) I would looooove to come to usa and dance there. I'm thinking very seriously of heading to canada in late jan then usa for a while. where do u say is the best place to go in usa and check out the raqs sharki scene.
What a talented performer you are!!!It's so fun to see you,i can hardly blink, lol, you got it going on,these people look pretty much like my people are they from Israel?i wonder, anyway Shiva, beautiful, beautiful dancer.
thank you arvedsin. Much appreciated. The crowd are a mix of Arab, australian, asian, greek and any other nationality. It was at a middle eastern dance festival.
I love your style of bellydance - it's awesome, full of energy, flexibility and masculine grace. Keep dancing dude... let the world know that belly dance is every bit a man's art as well as a woman's.
hi Bellydance shiva, there is a strange turkish belly dancer diva on your right on utube doing very strange exhibition of movements, so different from the artistic performance of yours even though I am sure you are totally capable of doing what he does, your aim is not the same, it is clear that you love to dance! well actually she is a he and I acutally didnt do any fusion. I havent done rajasthani or bhangra b4 so it must be luck that I somehow managed to put that in there. Its a combination of egyptian raqs sharki with my own technique. yeah it was pretty fast paced I think and I've slowed up quite a bit.
this vid was taken about 4yrs ago..Im gona update it pretty soon...
unfortunetly not lena. Its a bit hard trying to get a good grasp with my egpytian, lebanese n gulf friends..everybody wants you to learn their dialect. inshallah I will get myself back into class. how about you?
No I don't speak it, but I want to learn. It's just such a beautiful language. Plus, most of the music I listen to is Arabic, so it would be nice if I could understand the deeper meaning of the song-- the translation ;)
I really love your style, and the group that accompanies your dancing is great, as well. You're one of the few bellydancers I've seen that really plays up the music. Can I ask where you learnt, and what style? I pick some almost Indian Odissi qualities in your handwork.
I learnt from practice at the beginning but then I took a few classes and had also learnt a lot from a lady here in Sydney. I learnt the egypt form of raqs sharki. The band were great that night tho I had no idea what they were going to play so it was pretty much improvised. as for the odissi style, I haven't learnt any indian dance forms b4 but perhaps it just came out in my performance.
While the arms are excellent and leg work is magnificent, try and work on your lower abdomen muscles. Not overly effeminate either which is rare, lots of belly dancers in Middle East are rather effeminate. Good work Shiva.
I actually like the "flab" very much. Stick-thin never did well in a profession that valued curves. You can't accent the curves very well if you don't have any.
hey thanks lena. I started dancing about 5 years ago. u know, I truly believe that this dance is one that is so individual. U have to feel it from within, the music n the soul of it. Its hard to explain. hope u know what I mean. In arabic they say aHsas which is roughly translated as the feeling. i.e the feeling u have for the dance (passion)
after watching you perform at castle hill tonight..l would have to say you were the best dancer in the room,,you have a great presence on stage and l hope l can see you perform live again,,wish there were more male bellydancers like you Shiva

Excellent dancing Shiva. It is not "just a woman's art", that is a Western idea. The men in the Middle East/Egypt have been doing it for centuries along with ladies.
Thank you very much. And I totally agree with you. Its a shame that the dance is often represtented as a women's art. It should be owned by both sexes and enjoyed.
Are u meaning my dance partner and I..what do u look like when we dance together? If so...looks amazing. two reasn. theres the male/female chemistry. Strong, masculine with the graceful. its quite seductive but not sexual. And theres a strength between us in drum solo and taksims

Hey! REALLY delayed reply! iv seen u at a couple of my church's dinner dances.. & at El phoenecian in parramatta @ my friends 18th!.. not being a pro in belly dancing i cant really pick up on your flaws!! really u never cease 2 amaze me! im always bragging on about how u put all the female belly dancers to shame!! Lol i hear ur goin 2 be performing @ my universitys orientation day! so im excited to see!!!
hahaha i recorded u on my phone so my friend could see it and it almost killed the speakers of the fone .. haha the sound system was ear piercing!! but nonetheless u never cease 2 amaze ;) il deff come and say hi! il be like IM THE GIRL FROM UTUBE! lol yayy!
Belly dancing... Oriental dancing... is not a womens' art, NOR is it a mans' art. It's a people art. People of all shapes, sizes, genders, and ages are welcome to take part in this beautiful dance. Why must people always have the idea in their mind that only good-looking women can do it? Its completely false. All it takes is dedication and patience, it has nothing to do with whether you're a woman or not.
Sensual, yet powerful
Beautiful, but still masculine
As a beginning dancer myself, I salute all the women AND men who perform the art of belly dancing. Everytime I watch one of these clips, it reminds me to keep practicing and makes me truly appreciate a culture I wasn't even aware of a year ago ^_^

I'm sure they're enjoying the show.
Something about the way he dances gives such a manly appeal. I wouldn't confuse him for a girl. Could be his body type too.

Unbelievable ENERGY! Handsome to boot! Your profile looks pharaonic.
when doing 2x veil maybe slow it down a bit. The only reason that i say this is veils are soft not aggressive like a cane may be.
Try it. I have been dancing for 30yrs. Just loaning some experience.

Not bad for a male but he lacks control and feeling important elements of the
oriental dance. Why dance so fast???
Slow down the tempo and individual
movements will stand out better.
Discard the cape!!!! Concentrate on
using body movements to their best
advantage. Keep the dance simple!
