  • Hi!, thanks for this video! is so interesting for me.... i wanna ask you about the microphone that you use usually for udu if you can tell me something...i'm checking diferent ways, but i still haven't found the best i think...

    thank you!!!

  • Oh I didn't mean that in a negative way! Sorry. Yeah I had no idea. I just assumed it was some kind of visual showmanship or something.

  • In response to a comment from korgnewb777 that stated they were not getting the striking on the back of the hand and that it looked funny - First, sorry I think in responding I think your comment got deleted. Have no idea how that happened. but I wanted to reply. See next two posts. Thank you for stopping by to check out my videos. -

  • Well. It may look funny but it is amazingly effective. It allows you to create a sound with a very soft and round texture. It acerbates the incredible depth of sounds and textures that can be created with the udu and just another level of finessing the air that moves around the drum.

  • When using this technique you can actually continue to create a sound and control the pitch even if you lift your hand off the drum shell completely. Just a suggestion if your interested. If you can't hear the music then try using either headphones or by turning up the volume. On the other hand – “Funny” is good as well…

  • SOOOOO sick

  • Knock on a hole!!

  • Genial maestro!

  • this thing would be perfect for me. i'm always desk drumming :D

  • Wow ! That is some fine pick'en ! Thanks.

  • Hello. impresionant sound and resonance truly.

    thanck

  • @uduboy This is great, I am looking to get one of those, unfortunately, here in Argentina is very difficult to find it out at an affordable price. I think i will have it done home made, do you happen to know the measures of it?

  • @vquarleri Measurements aren't important. Go ahead and make one. You want one that looks and sounds like yours, and not somebody else's. As a potter, I can say there are challenges getting all the pieces to fit together. Measurements aren't something I worry much about.

  • @ImperialistRunningDo I actually did that, I'm not very good doing those things, but I have a friend who does this kind of things, so I paid for the materials and his is doing it on his own meassurments, I'll have it soon, will try to upload a video when I finally have it

  • oh seriously, i wanna buy them all, i have the Udu Utar,i have ordered the claytones all four of them...im pracitcally in love :! :D

ok the mic is a Cardioid Condenser Clip-On Mic (PRO35AX)

its a great on , little high on budget..but then its the best !

  • oh yeah !

    thank you

i bought the same one .

    its incredible !

  • @rahuldesai8191 I would buy every of Franks Udus, they're all incredible as you said..

But could you maybe tell me what kind of microphone he used to plant inside of this one? I just know that a piezzo-mic won't work, is it maybe a sort of Lavalier-Mic? like the little ones for speech?

    thx for reply

  • Hey,WHERE DO YOU HAVE THE MICROPHONE PLACED ?

    PLEASE REPLY

    you play awesome !

  • @rahuldesai8191 it's one of frank giorginis udus that have an integrated mik-port in the neck of the udu, you can see the cable comig out on the side of the neck.. reeeeaally good handmade...

  • Hi,

What kinf of microphone to amplify would use such a model Utar Latin Percussion Udu?.

    Thank you for your attention.

    Regards!

    Hola,

¿qué tipo de micrófono usarías para amplificar por ejemplo un Udu Latin Percussion modelo Utar?.

    Gracias por tu atención.

    Un saludo.

  • @GAUDY2001 Did my Diploma Work about the Udu.. You may have different sounds everywhere around the udu, so you have to find a place your udu sounds well. I probably would place a Bassdrum-Mic or a Grand-Membrane-Condenser at the neck, but not directly in the neck cause of feedback ;D then i would take Drum-Overhead-Small-Membrane-Condenser mono/stereo and place it on the Top, justified to the border of the pothole.. So you got the main Bass at the neck and the high tones around the Pot..

  • I want one.... I want one now

  • nice

  • downloading this instrument's wav sounds thanks for the demo!

  • I want to buy an Udu..But cant figure out what Kind...It might be this one :)

  • I have similar one, this guy has an enormous sense of where to hit it. Very subtle changes in tones as well as some big changes. It's very difficult weaving all the techniques together.

  • thise was awsome you are very great at what you do thank you for your proformance

  • you play really well keep it up

  • Can you provide a link for the rubber? foam? stand you are using for the drum between the drum and the table? How would you compare this Utar in size to LP's version? Looks maybe bigger, especially the snout or nose? Or roughly the same in size?

  • Did he PM you about the stand? It's called softPAW, and you can find it at his website by Googling his name.

  • What kind of mic is in this utar and where can I get one. I received my udu utar in the mail today. I'm a big time beginner. I love playing things with my fingers and hands. This guy is very good. Are there instructional videos on technique and how-to?

  • Sweet! That udu looks awesome.

  • i gotta get me one of them ! and learn to play it.

  • : )

  • This is Gregg and I purchased my first udu drum from you at Pasic when Frank first introduced the line. You're still amazing on the instrument. I definitely have to do some shedding after watching the demonstration. You're still a bad man.

  • Great video, interesting instrument. I want to learn to play it now!

  • Excellent!!!

    whats Mics use???

  • this is cool

  • I like this instrument!! :)

  • The sound possibilities on this drum is virtually endless, such an amazing instrument

  • I agree. The Utar has the lowest of the lows and the highest of the highs with-in Frank Giorgini's Claytone Line of udu's. As with all of his wonderful magical drums you loss yourself inside them...

  • @uduboy i heard about this instrument only minutes ago while I was reading up on the Hang. What a diverse instrument, I finally know where those sounds come from in music. Thank you very much.

  • 2:57 is the craziest sound I've ever heard

  • WTF

  • Excellent sounds. Elegant playing.

  • Thank you

  • well, just watch this video then...

  • Just went out to buy an Udu after watching Marilyn Mazur on stage! I have no idea how to play it :) Where can I find your DVD? Is it out yet?

Great videos btw. I wish there were more

  • Thank you. I am very excited about alfred Publishing re-releasing my video out in DVD. We are just completing the graphics for the packaging. as I understand they are looking for a spring 2010 release. will post as soon as I know. Please check out Alfred Publishing online for upcoming release date and thank you very much for your interest. wishing you continued success...

  • FANTASTIK !

  • Wow. Superb playing.

  • I'M WATCHING YOU RIGHT NOW.

  • The part starting at 2:55 has some really interesting sounds in it. Great performance :)

  • Now I have to buy one. I first saw the Udu in a more "pot" looking form rather then the turtle looking one you have. Are they as good? Can't wait to learn!

  • tits or gtfo

  • Where did you get this udu and how much? Love the sound!

  • thats an utar not an udu per say ....

  • Wonderful. Thank you for your kind words...

  • Very musical playing. Enjoyed it.

  • Nice! 2:56

  • Thank you for visiting and watching...

  • You have inspired me, Brian Melick. I hope there's any avaible in Sweden to buy...

  • You are very kind. Thank you. I suspect that you can find them. Drums I use are created by frank giorgini and he has licensed 10 different models to LP. any music store that sells LP products will be able to get them for you. wishing you continued success in your musical journey...

  • cool groove you hit at about 3 minutes. the rest of it's cool too, but at 3:06 i was compelled to type: "cool groove." and so i did. a pleasure concocting grooves w. you over the past 2 days. let's do it again. bring your ceramic turtle next time.

  • i gotta get me one of those!

  • Great stuff mang I like it

  • Comment removed

  • Yes. This the LP Udu Utar. The Tambuta is a very nice Udu as well. I find it to be a really nice compliment to the Utar and vise versa. The tambuta has a shallower main body to it so it has a tighter sound. Quicker responce and tonally in the mid range area. Continued success with your udu. Thank you for stopping by to check out what I am doing with the Udu.

  • is it the lp utar? i have an lp tambuta but it doesn't sound as crisp and deep as this one.

  • gracias por compartirlo

    thanks

  • Also read Chinua Achebe's "No Longer At Ease."

  • you guys knew how to copy works of my great ancestors the igbo.udu is my igbo musical instrument, udu is igbo .

  • @tweenthyfourseventow

Yes, a fact that should never be forgotten or watered down!

  • Parabéns ! from Brazil !

  • great song!added my favorites :)

  • you are very good sir. I have been searching for the perfect hand drum to pick up and i just found it! I play flamenco and classical guitar, and this will be perfect because of the finger playing. Well anyway it was amazing!

  • I feel the same way today!.Im just getting into the flamenco percussion, but I cant take the cajon, it gives me back pain, so today i found this to be cool and you helped me to make my decision! Thanks

  • does it naturally give that loud and clear of a sound?

  • Amazing! Only the skilled like you get us such a performance to enjoy watching and listen to. Well done and keep the good work. Upload more clips please!

  • These drums are Frank Giorgini's Claytone series udu Drums which have been licensed to LP Music for Manufacturing and Distribution. You can get any of the claytone drums through any LP Percussion dealer... Have fun!

  • Where can i get one?!?

  • FANTABULOSO!!!...:)...

  • Thank you...

  • oohh my goot this so great

  • Thank you for your time and your kind words...

  • It's me again. Sorry but only after I send you the comment I noticed that you had also given the response to other visitors... Nevertheless, do you have a guess what's best for stage? because lavallier mics are hard to handle in concert...Thank you so much again!

  • Hello Brian!

    Great video, great sound!

I have my own Frank Giorgini's udu but I am getting a hard time trying to amplify it. I noted in your video that you have a wire coming out from the small hole in the udu mouth (the entry for amplification I guess that mine also have)... What kind of mic are you using? ...Thank you so much in advance!

    Best regards

  • i had great luck putting a large diaphragm condensor mic between the 2 sound holes and about 6+ inches above it. Not much EQing necessary. i forget whether or not i had it on cardioid or bidirectional though.

  • Thanks. I will try it! Any specific diaphragm condensor mic?

  • i used the Samson C03U USB mic. its pretty much perfect for recording this type of stuff. frame drums, too. i'd imagine any large diaphragm would just about do the trick. I'd prefer to use 2, but this is only one i have at the moment.

  • thanks! I have a similar one. I will try it. The thing is, I need one for stage...

  • hey i got my udu utar last night! And i love it, thank you for showing me thid great drum.

  • Where can i get one!

  • This is amazing...any idea when your video will be released on dvd? Alas, my vhs player is broken beyond repair...

  • Thank you for your kind words -

Congrats on your new Udu. Continued success with your journey.

  • I went out and bought an Udu after I saw this video... NOW the trick is to practice it so I can sound like THAT! :D

  • Thank you for your very kind words.

  • amazing. this is my favorite of your videos. I like the Utar more than any of the others and you play it so well....great beats....awesome percussionist

  • awesome i playing didgeridoo now

  • very nice. thanks for posting!

  • I love that kind of "underwater sound" !! What a variety of sounds on one instrument.

  • Thank you for your kind words. No I only play them. The udu drums that I play are designed and made by artisian Frank Giorgini. He has licenced 10 of his udu designs to LP Music. you can get them through any LP Music retailer. Here's to you getting 1, 2, 3, 10 of them ...

  • Wow..amazing sound..did you make this yourself?..it is really great..like magic..

  • This sounds excellent. Wonderful and inspiring playing. But one question: What kind of microphon do you use ? The sound is very direct and blending . Thanx for answering

  • Thank you for your kind words. I use the Countryman Isomax II. Hands down the best mic for the udu. I also recommend either a notch filter or a parametric eq so you can control feedback issues. Continued success to you.

  • Nice One dude

  • Thank you for stopping by to see what I'm up to.

  • Hi Brian!

    Excellent and inspirering playing...

I've finally got some "funds" together and have purchased a LP Udu Utar.

I've been coming back to your video every now and then and I love the tones and your feel for the instrument. Please make more!

I'm a bassplayer, but I have a hidden interest for percussion instruments. I hope to generate better moto-muscle skills in my hands by playing the Udu Utar and to get a greater understanding for world-music rhythms in general.

    Best Regards Peter

  • Thank you Peter. I am happy you enjoy what I am doing. I have to recommend to you John Bergamo's "Joy of Hand Drumming". It opened my head up to spliting my hand as well as individual finger technique. I wish you continued success with your work and again Thank You for your very kind words.

  • Hi Brian!

I've ordered a SoftPaw from you and I'm really looking forward to get the proper sound out of the Utar with it. The sound is dampened too much when the Utar is played lying in my lap. Your sound is very nice, so I guess the SoftPaw will improve my timbre...

  • So i just purchased the udu utar, and i was wondering what you used to mic this instrument.

  • Where/how do you get it/from?

  • Thank you for your kind words. I use the Countryman Isomax II. Hands down the best mic for the udu. I also recommend either a notch filter or a parametric eq so you can control feedback issues. Continued success to you.

  • Wait, do you hand make them?

  • No. Well I have tried my hand in making but they turned out to be large paper weights. I use Frank Giorgini's Udu Drums exclusively. I designed and patented several SoftPAW performance stands for his entire line of udu drums.

  • Where did you buy that Udu? The only one's im seen are smaller and more like a sphere.

  • I am blessed with a personal and professional relationship with Frank Giorgini. All the udu drums that I use are his. Both his Handmade as well as cast line known as "Claytone". You can obtain his "Claytone" drums through any LP Music retailer. Be careful cause' I bet you can't just have one...

  • Wonderful. I would love to read your report when it is complete. If possible please let me know where I can find it. Thanks. Continued success to you -

  • I'm writing a report on Igbo culture and this instrument is great!

  • Hey everyone I was hoping someone might be able to help me out. I've been messing around with my udu trying to amplify it. Im using a shure mic through a regular guitar amp but its not working very well. Every time I bring the udus sound hole near the microphone (without even playing) I get this horrible ringing feedback but Ive noticed it stops as soon as I cover one of the two holes. If anyone has had this problem or knows what Im doing wrong some help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

  • I got to know udu drum by a movie - Buena Vista Social Club. And I've wanted see how it is played. And finally here I got what I've wanted. :-)

I really appreciate for your impressive play and work.

  • Wonderful! I love the "boum boum" sound.

    I-will-make-udu-one-day...soon I hope :)

  • Yes. The udu is made of clay. Typically hand built not thrown on a wheel. Slab and coil technique. The drums in my videos are by Frank Giorgini. These are his cast version of the hand built drums he makes. Like all drums you develop calluses on your hands and fingers over time. Udus do have a Talking Drum quality that makes for great change in its voice. Thank you for visiting my videos.

  • that sounds like its made out of ceramic, is it? and i was allso wondering, that looks like it would kill your fingers after awhile, but im sure its just somethin you get used to xD very unique and i like how you can almost bend the note like a talking drum

  • After watching this and your other 2 videos, i have to get one of these... won't I be sad when i get it and can't get it to produce a fraction of the beautiful sounds you are creating... nah just kidding I'm getting one anyways, and thanks for convincing me that i need to buy one of these, that was great : )

  • Thank you for your very kind words. I am happy you stopped by to see what I am up to. There is a great danger with the udu... you can't just have one! you will want to get'um all!!!!

Have a great time with them.

  • WOW!!!

after hearing this i got hooked!!! i love the Udu so much now! you are an amazing musician :]

    keep up the good work!!

  • Thank you for your kind words. There are several different ones out there that Frank Giorgini makes. I wish you much success with your udu journey.

  • Very cool! I was searching the web for your "How To of Udu" video after watching this. Do you know if it is available on DVD? Thanks

  • I have had the video edited for DVD. Just need to get my graphics edited and then it will be available. I will write to you when all of this is done. Thank you.

  • Thanks looking forward to it. Does the video show many rhythms to play or is it mostly about how to get the sounds out?

I recently bought an udu, and the one other udu video that can be found via a web search. That one was kind of disappointing in that it mostly stuck to showing you different sounds you could get out of the thing and didn't teach any grooves.

  • Hi - Well I don't know if you will enjoy mine either. I really focused in on an approach since after being at several trade shows I saw first hand that folks enjoyed the Udu but were really interested in ways to play them. I do mix in several performances sections ie like these video excerpts but no direct rhythm lessons. Sorry.

  • super brawo pozdrowienia z Poland

  • Overall the tiered shape udus I would have to say yield the wettest sounds and textures due to the neck. The side hole will be round and low in contrast to the neck hole which will have a wetter overall texture. Alto Size or the #2 is a nice drum to concider.

  • i am looking to purchase my first udu drum and would like your opinion. What drum of the LP line yields the "wettest" notes. This is the sounds that i most love out of the udu so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

  • Thank you

  • 0_0

    love it

  • şahane he's very good on utar

  • Phil Colins always was a great drummer.

  • Great udu playing - I noticed the rest the udu is on doesn't look like the standard 'rope' ring - is it a special material?

Post more videos -this was outstanding.

  • Awsome music, awsome mullet!

  • The "King" of Udu

  • I wish you continued success with your music....

  • im def buying one of these now

  • ......love this instrument!!!

  • AMAZING !!!!!!

  • Buddy Rich of the udu!

  • wooow

  • Wonderful performance, beautiful sounds! Is there a DVD of your UDU vhs how to, if so where can i get it? Thanks!

  • Thank you. I wish you continued success with your work! If you haven't already experimented with water. Try it. It will allow you to tune the fundamental pitch it will also change the texture of the shell...

  • Absolutely dazzling! I think that the greatest thing in udu is the infinite amount of sound variety, especially in this kind of solo performances where you can hear all the details. I'm using udu in a film soundtrack now.

  • amazing, didnt even know this sort of an instrument existed :) good job man keep them coming

  • Thank you very much.

  • Amazing.. Great skills!

  • I will. sounds great. Cool for you all. Nothing like the sound of multiple udu drums being played together. Continued success to you all..

  • Very nice sounding udu and talent! We have 5 uduplayers in our band... If you want to listen, have a peek at my user page and check out the 'Tervakello' -sessions.

  • That is one of the nicest compliments. I wish you many many hours of great fun.

  • I just bought one becouse of your Video, I am not musical at all but I hope I get some fun out of it.

  • The sound you hear has no effects on it. Frank Giorgini's Udu Drums have additional small holes per Chamber for the use of Lavaliere Microphones. What you are hearing is the drum miced with an internal microphone installed through one of those small additional holes. Flat EQ and No Effects Just the Drum in its purest form.

  • Many thanks! Sounds great. Would you recommend any specific mic?

  • My favorite mic is the Countryman Isomax II. Flat shape. Front and back diaphragm. Can handle anything you throw at it.

  • cool video. did you use a mic to get that sound?

  • the 1 ur playng lp or franks?

  • The Drums that are in these videos are of Franks pre LP. Frank licensed 10 different drums to LP about 4 years ago. He also over saw production overseas and gave it his blessings. The claybody is a bit different but the fundamental tone is similar. The LP Claytone Drums have a slightly different personality off the shell. They don't ring as much.

Continued success with your work -

    Brian

  • Thank you for your kind words.

  • really well played

  • egemen = uduboy of the future comes from the middle east's legendry mountains called altay .

    fucking cool instrument man

  • Yes .....a very good udu player ....big respect

  • I wish I could do something like that.

  • very cool! you get quite a lot of variation of sound out of that thing! those 10-finger rolls remind of me of Indian tablas. post more soon!

  • The Udu Utar is created by Frank Giorgini and available through LP Music Suppliers. Hope this helps.

    Continued success to you -

  • very nice and so creative! where did you get that udu utar?

  • Thank you for your kind words

  • A Masterful udu player

  • Imaginative playing!

  • Lovely instrument, beautifully played! Thanks, Paul

  • Brian is an amazing performer, and I love the sounds and rhythms he makes on the udu drums.

  • Thank you for your kind words...
