When I was in Los Angeles in the 90s, a pickup would pull up to a corner and Spanish-speaking men would get in the back and many were left behind. I guess they were taken to do manual labour like gardening. So this is a reversal - a sign of the times.

In times of great economic trouble (the Great Depression for example), workers of factories and such would stand outside of the gates and beg the foreman to give them work for that day. Some lucky ons were picked out of the crowd and the rest could go home and hope there'd be another opportunity the next day. But it's hilarious when you put this in a white collar-context.
