Your first steps are too large! You loose a lot of time and explosiveness by the long time of ground contact! Furthermore your body's center of gravity is too low above the ground! Because of this you loose power pushing you forward... Your hips are also flexed too much!
Your really know your stuff man, thanks a lot, this has really helped me with my starting technique. I watch these video's before I race which is probably 3 times a week. Thankyou so much.
Hey nice vids , i have a question im an 15 year old junior high school student and im joining the Track and field team my best time is 12.18 sec i wanted to ask if do you have any opinion on how i can run 11.9? or can you give me a training schedule pls? thx so much
Blocks are faster. When you start off a horizontal surface, friction between your shoes and the ground is the only force that moves you forward. When pushing off an angled surface, the surface applies an equal force against your feet, allowing you to start running with more force. Essentially, pushing off a horizontal surface allows for more force to be applied because friction AS WELL AS the counter force to the movement of your feet increase the net force. More force = faster start.
Blocks slide backwards, that is why they have people hold them and they still slide backwards. So at that point and time you are losing traction not getting it.
Personally, I don't like blocks. I find I can get my knees higher for those crucial first steps and get that plyometric rubber band thing going without them. With blocks, I have to adjust to the momentary difference in stride those first steps.
Usually it's the opposite of whichever hand you use to write. Another test is to have someone (gently, but not pansy-like) push you from behind at a time you're not entirely expecting it. Whichever leg you extend to keep your ground will be your lead leg.
It appears that without blocks you can get closer to the start line. You can also push more confidently off solid ground than off blocks. Could either of these facts negate some or possibly all of the speed advantage offered by blocks?
Most accomplished sprinters that I have met just automatically assume that blocks make their times faster. But none of them can convincingly explain how they reached that conclusion.
Blocks or No Blocks? Perhaps each athlete should put both options to the test.
Yes you can get closer to if not right at the start line base on body type. And yes you can push more confidently off the ground then off blocks. I also come out at a lower angle without blocks. I am not sure that blocks offer a speed advantage. If I can push more confidently off the ground then I can use more force than I would with blocks. Yes the option should be put to the test.
I would imagine that judging from your description of your problem with block starts is that your technique is probably not quite correct. Athletes with stronger leg muscles can angle the blocks at an angle more perpendicular to the ground. Ideally, they should allow you a lower start than using the ground. After all, have you ever seen an Olympic sprinter start without blocks? I haven't.
I have a 100m race coming up, we are not gonna use block, so i was wondering, which is a better way to start, the normal standind start,or the whole proffesional bending down start
in 5 days i will be running the 40 for a football combine and i was wondering if the paddling of the arms (on your first technique) will help me in that because my coach told me i should have my hand at 45 degree angles with my elbows in. Also should i have my feet shoulder width apart?
still dosent avoid the fact that if you took two people of equal speed, lets say you, and a clone of yourself, and the clone used blocks, while u used your kitty start, your clone would win
is hand stances at the start of a race important or not? because i have very weak fingers and feels like they'll snap if i put a majority of my weight on them when i get into a set stance in a race
what is the correct way to sprint, only on your toes,or does the foot go flat on the ground? this could be a stupid question, but i would relly like to know :) thanks
Nice hip displacement with the Cheetah. Also, looks like the athlete is expressing all the potential energy from the hips/knees/ankles. And I like the big, backward arm rip to set up the shoulder stretch reflex and encourage full amplitude in the alternate leg.
MY steps are rapid and quick but it feels as if im not going no where I Work out on my Hamstrings,Calves, and thighs doing Squats,Rises,And running stairs but to in crease my stride I train with the stairs skipping one step then stepping the same usual
I dont get What im doing wrong. I NEED SPEED, Help? Its Very Urgent.
hi, i can run about 11. sec range, i got 2 styles of runnig short steps for quick accelerationand long stides for speed but i find it difficult to switch from small steps to large ones, any help?
Okay thanks. I've recently started having knee pain on both and I don't know whats caused it but I can't do any kind of plyometrics training and its painful to start running so any tips on what I can do while recovering?
We must have different a definition of popping straight up. As I am a long ways from popping straight up. I will post still images to show you how I am leaning forward and not popping up.
What you may be noticing is how my hips drive forward first, which makes it appear that my first movement is up but it is really forward.
You don't have to slowly straighten up as you go faster it should happen automatically
You have to time the start of paddle of the hand with the touchdown of the foot. Creates better posterior chain action. It also makes the hands recovery faster from back to front. This makes your feet recovery faster while maintaining low heel recovery.
It is more efficient than non-paddle action.
It is not something that is done for whole race as the action changes as speed increases.
?????? I dont know about that..paddle hands down for more power????....My coach has never taught me anything like that and he is a ex-National champion.
Can't give advice unless I can see you run. Send video of you running. That way I can explain how you should perform the drill and not just provide generic information.
To run like Usain Bolt, you have to control the levers as he does. If you want your feet to recovery fast, then you must use your hands, elbow and arms to move your feet, knees and legs. Look back at Usain from 2007 and then look at him in 2008, the biggest change is the path his hand travel from the front to the back and the back to the front
hey..great teaching!! can I ask you about which makes faster? cause I`m 6´3 and I know that with long legs is more difficult to accelerate..but it´s possible to make feet faster and improve technik..look like Usain Bolt !! he has long steps and fast feet= world record! thx...
It allows you to get more action out of your hands. It is faster than the standard chop your hand downward or swinging them. It will make your start faster and improve your acceleration mechanics. A few elite sprinter do it.
he got the twich but no power

Are there any scientific studies to compare block starts vs. no blocks ???
If yes, where are the results posted?
healthhavencom 2 years ago
I imagine there are but I can't say where off the top of my head.
Most studies I have seen compare the different style of block starts.

Yes, before blocks were mandated by the IAAF. Sprinters did start without them, Some pretty good ones at that.
Before saying my technique is the issue, explain the technique of using blocks as you understand it.

Before blocks came along sprinters had no issue running fast.
Of course they are slower than me if I am beating them.

Yes993 3 years ago
Let the knees heel. You can't apply force on painful knees. You will just end up picking up bad habits.
tttjump 3 years ago
You might have "jumper's knee".
try bending your leg to about a 90 degree angle. Then rub hard horizontally on the kneecap and the tendons immediately below it.
It hurts, but if done every day, it relieves the pain.

Asafa Powell, Usain does it with one hand and not both, Maurice Greene did it.
