  • what's the song called at 4:00??

  • this guy doesnt know belgium was independent at 1830 , only holland didnt want to face this fact till 1839

  • @fej426 It is a matter of prespective

  • @TheSatanicEmperor why did belgium have a king on the 21 first of july 1831? i don't think occupied countries dont have kings or presidents of their own

  • @fej426 They claim that it was a king wile it actually was a puffed up frenchmen. Doesn't seem legit to me.

  • @TheSatanicEmperor to start with ,leo 1 was german who married the oldest dauther of the english king , he would have become "king" of great britain but then she died when giving birth to their child, then we where going to become indepentenden and all the big nations then (prussia, russia, great britainn france) said it was okay and great britain was sending leopold the first yo us to prevent that france would deliver the king .

so what did u say ? it wasnt legit? think again

  • Well done!

I think you captured a good overview here. If you were to make a slightly longer version you could elaborate a bit more about the Dutch wars with Spain, Austria and England and perhaps some scientists (van Leeuwenhoek, Lorentz), philosophers (Spinoza, Descartes) or Dutch exploration (two centuries of trade monopoly with Japan, mapping of Australia, establishment of New Amsterdam).

You could also show a time/period index in a corner for reference. Just suggestions though ;) Good work!

  • @w0rt3l Well Spinoza was from Portugal and if you talk about René Descartes ? He was french like me , he was born in La Haye en Touraine (Indre et Loire/France ) . And Napoleon is not part of your History . You were part of the French empire at this time , included all europe .

  • @Frenchkisssss

Spinoza was born in Amsterdam which makes him a Dutchy. His ancestors came from portugese-Jewish descent and fled to Holland during the Inquisition as they were slaughtering Jews and protestants in the lower countries.

  • @Frenchkisssss

One would think Napoleon's brother Louis was part of our history since he was the official King of the United Netherlands back in the days, being a puppet of his brother, he was alot better for the people than his older brother in every way.

After Louis' reign the United Netherlands came into Napoleons hands for a couple more years making us part of the French Empire of old, and you claim Napoleon has no part in our history?

It's just as much our history as it is yours.

  • @Frenchkisssss Sorry, Spinoza was born in Amsterdam, only his parents came from Portugal. Of course, you are right, Descartes is from France, but he lived and worked a long time in the Netherlands.

I chose these people not because of where they were born (as you can see) but because they show what was possible in the Netherlands at the time, given the relative freedom of religion and speech and a healthy academic climate. Napoleon I have no strong opinions about. Cheers :)

  • I do like this video. Shortcut history!

  • this is bad

Simplist!

  • Goed filmpje! Zit heel mooi in elkaar.

  • Dear foreign friends! Itr sounds pretty unmodest, but - dutch history is so multilateral & complicated that it's very difficult to choose its nucleus!

Naja, vlaanderen.

  • Now i had my history lessons for the next 6 semesters on highschool

  • loool the efteling song xD

  • Where's the weed?

  • @135Raige weed is today and this video is about the history

  • @135Raige in my dutch mouth of course!

  • i'm proud of my country, god bless the Netherlands!!

  • Well, the dutch created more land 1985 by creating another province called 'flevoland', they created a huge island on the water where alot of people live now a days.

  • very interessting

  • Anne Frank die einzige Niederländerin die mein Respekt bekommt. Der Rest kannste vergessen.

  • @DutchMasterJohan no problem m8

  • @BigLouieLittlePhilly Und du kannst vergassen als Anne Frank.

  • @pyromaniaknl vergassen? was meinst du hirsch damit?

  • @BigLouieLittlePhilly Moehaha....that's like saying your birth was the only good thing that happened....the rest of your life was misused abused and hopeless.

  • Im related to Charlemagne! HELL YEAH!

  • Leuk!

  • @TheDutchman4 The Frisians well they are just As all dutch people a Society

  • u forgot that the inventor of the submarine is also dutch

  • Big mistake 1830 was belguim independence on the map

  • I emigrated 50 yerars ago and have never nissed it a bit..... upon being asked i explain that the nethertlands can be travelled on foot in half an hour, but only 15 minutes if you on a bicycle.

And yet... during many years I would often badmouth the duch sioling my own nest. But I had to quir doing that after I realised that they are a pretty clver bunch of people with a vision

  • i love you josephine, the prettiest blonde dutch girl

  • kanker nederland

  • Not even a quick mention that following WWII, despite the country being bankrupt, Holland still managed to send out an expeditionary force of 100,000 soldiers to the Former Dutch East Indies?

As Lord Vader would have said: "Impressive... Most impressive!"

You should have cut half of De Beemster... De Beemster... DE BEEMSTER

  • Totaly fals information dude, and the land map is not correct either. About ""Belgium"" is the fact that de Walons didnt wanted to be a part of the Netherlands because they didnt spoke French...the Flemish people did not wanted to seperate from the Dutch

  • Funny how the Frisii and the Frisians are simply overlooked, despite them being the tribe causing the Roman border to remain at the Rhine and the kingdom defending these lands against Charles the Great. History of occupied Magna Frisia in 5 Minutes is more like it.

  • Consider this just me being curious, but why did you use in the part you tell about the Hunebed builders music from the Efteling and het Volk van Laaf?

  • @Klokhuisjes It's just my (weird) sense of association. When I thought about music for the Hunebed builders, I immediately thought about this tune, don't ask me why =) I hope you like it nevertheless.

  • @Velders :) Yeah I still like it, was just wondering. I grew up in that part of Netherland (Drenthe).

And because I spoke the Dutch Low Saxon language (Nedersaksisch) I was teased by other children and even adults when on vacation in other parts of Netherland (Holland). So as long as there's no degrading thought behind it, I'm cool. ;) Thumbs up!

  • I hope the history of Holland will not be extended with Leader of Bilderberg Group.......

  • @sswemmer

Ah come on... Did there happened something bad there? No. Because you know what? It isn't exactly known what they discuss during that convention. So stop talking bullshit, really people should stop being scared,

  • @DellionNL Actually; it is exactly known what is discussed there. Inside moles like Jim Tucker brings out (sometimes) minutes from the agenda. I wished it was bullshit. And I'm sorry, I will never stop talking, even when you call it bullshit. The real bullshit is people being numbed down like sheep and taking everything up the tailpipe. The European Union for example; nobody voted for that crap. Or the Euro. Soon the N.A.U. will rise. You call that bullshit? It's fascism. You better wake up

  • @sswemmer

:') and the piramides in egypt were made by aliens,

Oh and the earth is hollow! And there is Niburu a new planet offcourse!

It's all true mate! There is enough 'evidence' Yay!

    /sarcasm off.

Geweldig he, of niet?

    /translation off.

  • @sswemmer

    Waar slaat dit op.

  • When does Netherland on earth apologize and compensate the ex-colony countries?

The Asian and the African are very angry of such criminal racist dutch. And, they plundered cultural property from countries they occupied. Rerurn ALL now.

  • @anfordable you most be confusing us with germany because what did we do to the asians or africans ??? and who are you calling an racist ????? the only thing that is occupied are the few regions we have we are not germany with hitler and all that stuff in 1939

  • @anfordable

dude the slave traders were not me, thats few 100 years ago. why should i apologize for that.

besides the colonialism of the dutch brought wealth and development in afrika and asia. or would you like to go back to barbarism and nature gods? you pop you choose.

  • I just being Dutch...

  • 0:41 is in my home town hahah bless holland

  • Belgium didnt like being a part of the Netherlands. Thats kinda short. Guess not a lot of people know or care about it.

  • hahahaha and all the black folks from africa shipped to america, chained into dark merchant ships layered on eachother by the dutch to be sold as slaves 8 months later were not mentioned in this clip nor all the indonasians that got fucked in the ass by the dutch!!! what a glorious history indeed!! what a lovely people the dutch!!! hahahahahahahhahahahaha

  • @xman822 hahah xd idd

  • The Dutch are a nice people. Most countries have evil sides. I love British history but even I can admit the British did some very evil things, same with the French, Germans, Americans, Russians etc. but I can't think of one evil thing the Dutch did.

  • @MajBlood , I can, how about slavery?

  • @sub89 Well everyone had slavery man that doesn't count. Saying is slavery is an automatic killer to the notion that there is anyone country that were all good. If you are going to use slavery use it as a point against the Americans, who did it worse than everyone else.

  • @MajBlood How can you say slavery doesn't count? Just because every nation was doing doesn't make the act less bad. Hey I will admit I have a hard time too thinking on something the Dutch did wrong, I was just being a smart ass about you statement. Btw did you know the Dutch were the last to end slavery? Anyways dutch people are okay some are nice some are not. trust me on that just like any other nation. You have nice and bad people.

  • @MajBlood do you remember indonesia ??

  • @MajBlood They massacered an entire island somewhere in Indonisia because of a dispute of spices.

  • @MajBlood

The dutch did do bad things we traded slaves on a really bad way(most of the slaves didn't survive the journey across the ocean) its a black chapter in our history

  • @tunaclan I wouldn't feel too bad about it. The British and Spanish traded slaves too and most of theirs would die in the middle passage too.

  • @tunaclan I wouldn't feel too bad about it. The British and Spanish traded slaves too and most of theirs would die in the middle passage too.

  • @tunaclan

Really a black chapter.. No ;) It was only 5% of the total trading in slaves. Wich was really not that much.

  • Fuck The dutch they stole our country ... but 1 day we frisians will be free !!!!!

    Leaver Dea .... os Sleaf

  • @Frysianboy Omg.. Hoe oud ben je, ff serieus. En wat als je dan onafhankelijk bent? Wat dan? A dead nation..

  • Lol, music of Zelda Ocarina of Time in this video, great memories

  • Heres some more Dutch history: Indonesia was a coerced colonial economy. In the 19h cent. Indonesian peasants were required to cultivate 20% or more of their land in cash crops to meet their taxes for the state. Crops were sold to gmnt contractors at fixed & low prices. When resold on the world market. they were HIGHLY profitable 4 Dutch traders, shippers, the Dutch state, and ALL of its citizens. they were HIGHLY profitable 4 Dutch traders, shippers, the Dutch state, and ALL of its citizens.

  • cont. According to one scholar the cultivation system from forced Indonesian labor "Performed a miracle for the Dutch economy," enabling it to avoid taxing its own ppl and providing capital 4 it's Industrial revolution.

I hope you thank all of the people's of the world that propelled you out of shit and into your success today Netherlands. All of your wealth today is based off of the exploited backs of others.

  • @GGLebo23 U are american? Made out of the european countries which made colonies for own enjoy. Let's not talk about the massive slavetrading to America in horrible circumstances. Your nothing better, ur weaker.

  • @GGLebo23 Like any other country at that time! England, France, Germany, Spain, Portugal. I'm not proud of it but it is a part of history and acctually ''normal'' business for every colonial empire.

  • we already had countries during the 80 years war

why did you not post the VOC in this video

  • @dragongame2 Start of the Stock Exchange. The V.O.C was the first"company to give out shares that could be sold and gave u a share of the profit.

  • The text changes too fast

  • Respect.

  • so, nothing about the frisians, the saxons, keeping out the huns, the plague, famine... post golden age crisis, freedom of speach (Dutch invention)...

  • @lygophile You're not the first to make remarks about content lacking in this video. To all these people I'd like to say: Please read the disclaimer. I know I let out a lot of stuff and it has a slight bias towards geographical aspects (therefore 'hunebedden', Leeghwater,..) because of my original audience.

I really invite you (and others) to make a video about the aspects of Dutch history you mention in addition to this video. I don't disagree they're important, I just had to set priorities.

  • @Velders Greetings from England. This was very interesting, and informative, Dank U.

  • @lygophile

Zelf al eens iets ondernomen EN volgehouden? Luie flikker!

  • I love the Netherlands,

  • Holland was NOT neutral in World War II. They collaborated with Germany. They let the German army cut through Limburg to get to Belgium faster. STOP rewriting history!

  • @toeli7 they were neutral in world war I in world war II the nazi occupied holland because we are official germanic

  • @yuigu It Was the fasted route to London and Paris. We where just in the way and you can't send your troops over neutral countries. We tried to stay neutral, but the germans thought otherwise.

  • @sombercore but more than a half of holland was Germanic if they were not there would died much more of it's population

  • @yuigu The germans saw us as western europeans. Poland and Russia where not that lucky because germany thought of them as an inferior race. They did not think that dutch people are a part of germany. They occupied holland and belgium to evade the great line of defense structures the French build after WWI on the border with germany (I think it's called the maigniot line). Going through the netherlands and belgium to paris was much easier and took far less time then a head on attack on th French

  • @toeli7 so you're sugesting that holland was on the nazi side? don't think so!

  • Velders, Kuddo's to you for making this movie!

  • There is a saying : God created the world but the Dutch created the Netherlands.

  • @djunkie 'God created the world but the Dutch created the Netherlands....' - you forgot to add '...and the transatlantic slave trade.'

That's where the Golden Age got it's wealth from, after all.

  • @maureenOWW Not really, the Dutch Golden Age was caused by the Republic taking many of the previously-Portuguese claimed Indonesian islands, and therefore controlling the spice trade, the most profitable trade of them all.

  • @maureenOWW Wrong, the Portugese and Spanish started the transatlantic slave trade. And the British were the biggest slave traders.

  • @wjgmspeedy The ones that bought them. Curaco was one big slave camp where the dutch would bring their slaveships and sell the slaves from there to colonial parts of england and spain. In Africa there are still remains of slavecamps wich say "God zij met Ons" (God is With us) on the front Arch. Maybe we did not inventid the slave trade, but we turned it into a big buisness.

  • @maureenOWW

Though being the pioneers in the transatlantic slavery, the Dutch weren't that big in it proportionally. If you don't know it - the Jews, of old, were always the masters of the slavery (being a key organizers that time as well). Concernin' poor black slaves - they were sold as the slaves by their chieftains (the guys with the same skin colour).

A Golden Age welfare rooted mostly in a CALVINISTIC rationalism - something, say, Portugal (another great colonial power) didn't know.

  • GREAT VIDEO !

  • vette film man :-)

    Btw 1:17 - 1:49 Legend of Zelda?

    cool vid man :-)

    Btw 1:17 - 1:49 Legend of Zelda?

  • goed gedaan jochie

    well done mate

    bien hecho che

  • hisioty never end but it was great tlo look at

  • Comment removed

  • were the holland people celts?

  • So, where are all the Moroccans?

  • uuhm claiming land while man is finite is stupid anyway.

I claim nothing i lose nothing

  • ...... Holland wins the world cup 2010... :)

  • now yu can say rotterdam is the biggest port of the world ( okay one of the biggest)

  • @par2765 just get over it. It happend. We can't do ANYTHING about it, because the people who live in the present haven't done ANYTHING at all! It's all in the past, you're just being immature for a grown-up by putting us in one box.

so say; what the hell are you trying to get at? And don't tell crap like 'our lifes are hard because of it' because if you want to achieve something it is up to yourself and not up to something in the past.

  • Comment removed

  • @par2765 I'm sorry for barging in but it's quite immature what you're doing. You're putting all the Dutch people into the same box (don't know if it's the good expression) because some of our ancestors did some wrong things you're putting the blame on us! The past can't be changed, and what could we have done? It's the same as saying things like, for example, "It's all the German's fault that there was WW2" or "It's the Muslim's fault that 9 11 happend" Don't blame people who aren't the cause!

  • @xxjonkoxx ..Don't take it personal. It is a discussion were people say everything. And where we play all sorts of cards. ok?

  • @par2765

You're acting like a victim, and you clearly are not.

We live in 2010, whatever happened with slavery and war, it's sad, but can't change it, it's deffenitly not this generation's fault.

a good world will start with yourself, so stop blaming the netherlands like you're a victim for life....

  • @xxjonkoxx ..That is not totally true man.. . Sometimes I become very angry when I think of the past. Because I cannot understand that a race can be so evil to another race. Look at it from my point of view. It were my ancestors that had to suffer man. When I read the history, I can feel also the pain man. Perhaps it is really a trauma.

    Can you understand that ?

  • @xxjonkoxx ..You (white people) talk easily about it. And that makes it more awful.

  • @par2765

I don't like what happened to the dutch too in ww2.

But like Xdiris says, you can't blame a whole country for what our ancestors did.

    So!

  • @xxjonkoxx ..Sorry man, but I don't think that you have any knowledge of what I mean. You will never understand what a black man feels. Is a genetic thing. You are not black. We have a genetic and spiritual connection with our ancestors. And we believe in God and justice.

  • @par2765

without the history of slave trade you would probably lived in Africa, have you ever realized that? through the hardships of your ancestors they have given you a great gift and you are befouling that gift by wining and blaming and everything else to make yourself look like a victim of actions century's passed. honor your ancestors by taking there suffering and struggle to gain rights and build the life they dreamed of. there is no white man stopping you from achieving those dreams

  • @par2765

    That's not true.

We might have done bad things along time ago.

Nothing this generation can do about now.

Every country has done things ages ago, like america for example.

And without slavery most black people you know today would not exist.

You do not have the right to be mad about that, you didnt experience it.

    It's sad, but it happened...

  • @xxjonkoxx ..I experience it every day again. Because your ancestors stole all our wealths.

  • @par2765

Hmm, you experience nothing, you was never placed in a position like that.

I never took advantage of stealing.

Whatever my country decides to do with money etc, I dont care.

I'm just here to live my life, and it happens to be in the netherlands.

  • @xxjonkoxx ..I blame this generation also, because your ancestors did the criminal acts for you. So that you can have a better life today . You also take advantage of the stealing.
