Just finished my 2009 tax return & getting ready to cut my check to feed the beast the balance of what it didn't devour throughout the year. 03/23/10 - House HC bill signed into law by Pres. BO. This is also the day back in 1775 when Patrick Henry made his famous statement "Give me liberty or give me death" - strange coincidence. I would like to take back my earlier remark regarding the "silver lining" - there is nothing silver, gold, or even bronze about this bill - it's all garbage. Thank you once again, elected officials, for not listening to the American ppl & for doing whatever the hell you want to anyway...you're fired.
03/21/10 - Historic HC bill passes in House 219 - 212. Thank you, Congress. As if I didn't have enough taxes to pay already. I hope your bags are packed for your permanent trip home in November - we will replace you at the first opportunity.
There may be a bittersweet silver lining for my particular industry (hospice) if, despite our best efforts, this HC monstrosity does indeed become law. The gov't will be cutting costs everywhere they can, of course, and since hospice is generally less costly than traditional aggressive medical treatment, many older citizens will be referred to end-of-life care in much higher numbers. Hurry up and die already, people! But I'm sure the gov't will find a way to destroy hospice care too, eventually.
lol, the guy mooched money off his church and everyone he knew because he didnt want to buy into his employer insurance program. What a moron, his community should have let him go bankrupt, those are the kind of people that deserve to go bankrupt. He is precisely the type of person that should be forced to have coverage.
OK, this kinda shows the problem I have with these people. They think that they know better what we need than we do. That is actually not acurate. They think someone they know of knows best, because nobody in Washington wrote any of these bills. They think the revolutionaries and radicals who chose to go in to education as a means of changing the mindset of America know best.
sshimp6, In this case the "nanny state" knows best. Elites, like Durbin, represent the antithesis of common sense down to earth people. They underestimate our ability to realize they are lying. And we know this issue is not about HEALTH or CARE. It's about CONTROL and we are their "subjects".
Durbin, WE THE PEOPLE are not going to sit and take this BS anymore. You must be defeated!
My dad said to me the other day on the phone. The biggest thing that pisses him off about most of today's politicians and intellectual elite's is they think the average American is an idiot. And wont see the bullshit they are trying to push.
Sensible regulation of health care and insurance only!
We the people don't want a government option or a takeover of health care!
An incentive that matches the tax savings by large corporations (34%) to purchase health care benefits including Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) for everyone would be the best low cost way to let the free market work and help more get better health care.
Durbin, it is there, it is not there, I don't know............. really, should our representatives be pushing bills that they have not read. Pathetic, really an embarassment and stain upon our republic.
Anyone that claims they don't want to mandate what insurance you can get, obviously hasn't read about the Health Insurance Exchange (HIE). If you ever change coverage, you must use the HIE (or public option). This IS NOT a free market solution, but a federally price controlled way to kill private insurance, period.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
OPTION DOES NOT = MANDATE STOP THE LIES F*CKERS! besides, the only people who will not benefit from a public option are INSURANCE COMPANIES. Teabaggers, stop dragging this country down and doing the bidding for the elite corporatists. I'll take "evil" Obama and Dick Durbin over some f*cking insurance company republican scam artist ANY day of the year.
I guess you're not paying attention. The answer was that you didn't have to choose the public option. But the result was that you will be forced to buy something or be fined. Where in the constitution does it say that congress has the authority to tell people what they must buy?
When I said "you must use the HIE (or public option)", I didn't mean they're the same thing, but you must get one or the other... or yea, get fined ;)
"I predict future happiness for Americans if they can prevent the government from wasting the labors of the people under the pretense of taking care of them.". -Thomas Jefferson
So he doesn't know whats in the House bill, so what. Why would he? He is a senator. As long as he knows what is in the Senate bill when he votes on it.
I don't understand how the first guy seemed kind of proud that he didn't take his employers health insurance. That was kind of confusing.
Yep he avoived answering pretty much all the questions. But did anyone in the crowd press him to answer the most basic question that you both asked? Where in the Constitution does it allow for congress to mandate people buy health insurance?
I agree man the auto inaurance comment by the host was sneaky trying to make you trip, you totally owned him though and you thought on your feet, ncie vid
Durbin used to be our Senator, until we moved. He has never been useful except to the extreme left. He is as crooked as the rest, and needs to be voted out.
Dick Durbin is my Senator. I've written to him about my opposition to Cap & Trade and the Health Care Bill. He did write back (I believe it was a form letter) giving his reasons why he will be voting FOR BOTH. He did not address my concerns, but only stated the generic talking points about why we "need" both of these Bills passed. He is always in 'lock-step' with any far left agenda and won't ever be disuaded from that position. I have never voted for him and never will.
This push by the Left is not about healthcare, it is part of bringing "Fundamental Change to America" that the Obama spoke of during his campaign. It is about restructuring society and greatly tightening the Left's grip on as many aspects of our lives and our economy as they can possibly manage, as quickly as they can possibly manage it before we can stop them and it becomes too late. Period. All discussions of the misc minutia in the "Bill" is just that, distraction from the real issue.
Excellent question Steve!! Thank you for asking that. What is sad is our "Senator" doesn't have a clue..yet he is pushing us to follow?? I'm sorry I love my friends but if they told me to drink the kool aid you bet I'm going to know everything in it. WAY TO GO when that smart azzzzzz guy with the horrible tan asked you about car insurance. You owned him. My aunt is a hospital administrator for visiting nurses. She said that program would just about be gone. Thank you for showing your backbone!
There are two arguments to be made here. The first is that we as a country cannot afford it.
The second is that if the public option is part of the new law, then that will end up being your only option. The reason is because your employer will have a choice between paying between $6,000 and $8,000 for your private insurance, or they could choose to pay the 8% additional payroll tax of about $4,000, or less, to opt you into the public plan; you will not have a choice, the choice is theirs.
well to counter your argument, i think that in the bill it prohibits businesses from enrolling in a public option for at least a couple years.
Within that time frame, it's quite possible that the private industry will be able to compete by reducing fees which might make your "$6000 and $8000" estimate more like $6000 and $6000.
To understand what would really happen one only has to look at the other federally funded public option system. Education. There is private education and the public option. Private education always costs more. The public option wont make it costs cheaper. It sets the price and drives the cost up from there. It's no secret the per pupil costs have risen dramatically. While private costs spike with it. Compitition between companies are eliminated and an orderly increase in costs are the result.
Although public schools receive some funding from the Federal Govt, most comes from county taxes.
When you say "Private education always costs more' are you talking school expenses or tuition fees? On average local schools pay $10k per child, yet most private school tuition is under $10k. In a nut shell, private schools are more efficient and keep costs reduced.
A public opt. will be funded by user fees w/ some subsidies, where as education is completely subsidized. Apples and oranges.
Well, to counter your argument. How will requiring the insurance companies to except preexisting conditions, to reduce co-pays and deductibles, and to raise their maximum expenditure limits (on lifetime payouts), how will this lower their costs?
Just remember that the bill is still being worked out, and you're making some assumptions here that won't make any sense if they are in the final bill.
To answer your question on how costs would be reduced...although it sounds tough, mandating every person have health insurance will increase demand. I'm not necessarily for that but that is one way it could happen.
There are a number of arguments both sides have come up with that would help , unfortunately partisanship gets in the way.
My personal "real" health insurance is what is called catastrophic insurance. It's $165 a month. My annual deductible is $2,500. My total annual out of pocket amount is $5,000. The lifetime maximum that they will spend on me is $1,000,000.
This plan will no longer be available with most of the plans going through congress. So how will that increase choice? How will that make it better for me? They will limit choice, freedom, and make things worse.
We need to be very careful before we fundamentally change something so personal as our health care. With some things, there's no going back. If something is rushed through without us knowing the unintended consequences, then we may live to regret it for the rest of our lives.
Here's an interesting article on what we will lose with some of the changes proposed:
i do agree that a fundamental change in something as personal as health care is something that shouldn't be rushed. this discussion goes back at least over 10 years ago so it's not something that's been thought up in recent months.
if anything, a public option would mirror medicaid in the sense of how the government is involved in it. the way i see a public option is medicaid that people pay for as they go, instead of what medicaid actually is...you pay before you are eligible for it.
Obama's on record as being in favor of single payer health care (government run health care). There are those around him who are on record as saying that a government option is a foot-in-the-door to getting a single payer system. This is why we need to be careful.
Obama wanted all of this done by the end of July. If that would have happened, then we would have had no debate, we would have just been stuck with whatever they put together behind close doors. The town halls changed all of that.
hell i'm all for a single payer system too...at least the federal insurance is accountable to the people and not the wealthy stock owners.
look overseas and you will find single payer systems that work...and yes, there is still capitalistic competition involved...check out france or even a system that's not federally funded but federally mandated like in switzerland.
Obama says that health care is being rationed right now by the insurance companies, but he is wrong. It is not being rationed. Your health, and the care of it is your responsibility. Health insurance companies are just providing a service that you chose to purchase. How is that rationing anything? However, if the government is the provider, then there will be rationing; they will decide.
If you are poor then you can go on Medicaid. If you are not poor then you need to prioritize your purchases.
Then let's do something about the preconditions problem without throwing everything out. There are a lot of things that can be done short of giving control of our hearth care to a government that can't even balance its budget for the last 40 years and that is running us into insolvency.
Allow interstate purchasing of health insurance. Pass a portability law. There is a lot of reform to be done that does not enhance the governments power over us.
control of health care won't be given to the government...only the funding of it. just like medicare is only funded by the government, so will a public option.
it's all about who gets the money...the capitialists are fighting hard to propagandize health care reform to make sure their investors m
The government does control health care for the elderly. They are setting the prices that doctors receive for procedures. This is how it will be if they take control of our care. And in fact they will take even more away from the elderly because there is not enough doctors to cover 45 million more Americans, and to make it worse, doctors will be leaving because they will be making less money when the feds take over.
more demand equals financial security for doctors.
how can you think doctors will make less money when the feds take over? if a doctor wants to continue to only accept private insurance, then they'll continue to get that pay.
if a doctor wants to get a steady amount of patients, then they will.
i don't know one doctor that'll quit the business just because they are getting paid less...that made me laugh out loud.
...the capitialists are fighting hard to propagandize health care reform to make sure their investors make their profits, but at what expense? it's all about money, at least in my opinion i would give that money to the government...a government that is accountable to the people.
health care should be something everyone is entitled to and that's the bottom line. the status quo isn't working and hasn't for the last few decades, it's time we stop letting companies profit over our health.
I guess we have a fundamental disagreement that will not be resolved with debate. I believe that health care is not a right. I believe that you are responsible for your own care, and that the farther that care is removed from the individual, then the more expensive, and the worse that care will become. Do we agree to disagree?
not sure what you mean by that, but i do think that health care should be available to all without the risks of bankruptcy. if you think otherwise, you are a very self serving person.
think about national security and the well being of the entire country. think about fire and police protection, road and food safety, air and water safety...
it sounds like you wouldn't be for any of those if you're not for an available option for health care for all. after all, health care sums up all of those.
The only responsibility that government has is to provide us with what is outlined in the Constitution. They are only supposed to guarantee us the freedom to pursue our happiness, and that is all. How do you mix health care in with that? Are you going by the Constitution, or are you going by your heart?
How do you figure that they have the right to take my money and then give it to another for health care? This is nothing like the military, which is there to allow us to pursue happiness.
the responsibility of the government is to be voice for the people and to make changes that better the lives of all americans.
since we live in a democratically elected republic, this is how domestic and foreign policies are made.
they have a right to spend money on whatever the people allow them too, which in this case i think it's more important to spend billions on it's own people than overseas on unnecessary wars that seem to be profiting companies who make bombs.
You are wrong. The states and the people created the federal government to do only those things that the states, or the people, could not do for themselves; see the 10th Amendment; read the Constitution.
They don't have the right to spend money on whatever the people "allow". Once again, refer to the Constitution. There are limits on the federal government; they are limited by the Constitution.
Roosevelt in 37', threatened to "pack" the Supreme Court, and that is when it all went wrong.
I do wish your health insurance company could compete with the ones in our state! I just priced some out at 50% higher premium with less deductible and less annual maximum $ paid. That was after going through several more higher priced ones.
Americans need choices like this to help lower costs and make our health care system even better.
Yes it would be nice if they made a federal law allowing people to purchase health insurance across states lines, but that would only empower the people, and not the government, therefore the democrats would be against it. And when I say the democrats, I'm talking about the democrat leadership, not the average democrat.
I checked out what is actually deducted from my checking and it's less than I quoted. Here's the company: Asuris Northwest Health
Congress actually knowing whats in the bills they are so adamantly trying to force down our throats? Oh come on! You cannot expect congress to read all the bills they generate. I mean that would be like doing their jobs! And we all know that doing their jobs gets in the way of their Golf games, world trips on the tax payer dime, and joy riding around the country on private planes to meet with special interests. Given a choice between reading the HC bill or just forcing it down our throat pick 1
Can't stand this MOTHERFUCKER he's made me VERY ANGRY when he made SHITTIE comments about our BRAVE TROOPS. I want him voted out of office. FUCK HELLcare.
While we may technically still possess the private option under HR 3200, no one will offer it because it will be impractical. It's just cost prohibitive.
This is the same exact "backdoor" ban they tried to pass on the 2nd Amendment by placing enormous taxes on firearms and ammunition, and highly restrictive mandates.
While technically true, there is no provision to force you out of your plan (initially anyway), there is a HUGE assumption that exists as a dirty little secret: You can keep your coverage---assuming it is still made available to you!. What business would not unload all health care costs to remain competitive? My employer has already stated: "If this passes, your plans cease to exist". So Tell me DICK, how do I get to keep it if I like it?
thx for the link,,these people are completely clueless..btw who was the jackass with the mic,,who thought he was gonna be a funny guy..to bad he and Dick was the joke.....good job......
Durbin thought he was so sly slipping in the "like auto insurance..." bit.
Big difference DICK:
You may be forced to purchase car insurance, but by that time, you have already chosen for yourself the OPTION to purchase a car.
2ndly, if Healthcare is a "right" DICK, and therefore the Gov't must provide it, then where is the line to pick up my government provided handgun as it too is a right???
Yeah, it is an option, just like paying your taxes is like "voluntary compliance". What a joke! Aslo a great retort by LandofDaFree. You don't have to by auto insurance if you don't want to drive, or don't have a car. So there is still a way around it, but there is not way around this marxist crap.
"Would you impose indivudual mandates in the bll? "
Response: "I'd like to see how its written."
Translation: Unlikely.. As long as the constituents sit back and don't research what I'm doing and the clause is so verbose that it takes a team of lawyers for the public days to figure out I just sold them out.
Well done in calling him out and succintly spelling out his objective.
Very good questions by the way - well spoken, well prepared. Those two guys should be commended. Good job pointing out the difference between health and auto insurance. And btw, not all states have mandatory auto insurance either.
Thank you, sir. I could have been more well spoken and even more well prepared if I wasn't such an angry, hate filled, right wing extremist looking to shout people down and stop the debate.
You also had another good point on auto insurance.
I know exactly what you're saying - I suffer from the same set of conditions. I guess these are pre-existing. I wonder if they are covered under Obamacare?..
When Obama was elected I had lost all faith for my nation, but with resent events happening in healthcare, I'm proud of what I'm seeing. People are realizing that Obama was a bad choice which means Republican House in 2010
That is if the Republican Party does not screw it up - and I have full faith in their ability to do that. They have demonstrated it in the last several election cycles.
Good video Steve. Durbin is one of the slickest politicians around. He's not going to say anything of substance that might get challenged in an open forum. He's going to speak to friendly outlets - like MSNBC, and give the Dem talking points.
The public option is such a cat & mouse game. We all know it's a govt takeover. Dem's won't admit it is, even though we can find quotes from them in the past - which pretty much spells out their plan. And, we know it will balloon the national debt.
Have to cut the politicians some slack - they don't have a clue - about the HC bill or much of anything else for that matter, especially if they're a Democrat!
If they want to know what's in the bill maybe they should ask someone actualy involved in witting it, like that communist radical Van Jones at the Apollo Alliance.
well done, LandofDaFree--I'm so thankful for people like you who are standing up for an honest, open, intelligent debate re: healthcare reform! Thanks for fighting the good fight!
Chicken shit Dickless Turban should come down state and have a real health care town hall with the rest of his constituents instead of hiding in closed meetings and hanging out in Chicago.
I would also support allowing people to buy into the same plan federal employees buy into - more choice, great coverage, private plans, no govt involvement.
But the goal isn't providing affordable care - it's govt control.
yes, the government will FORCE us to take their "option". Those who choose private insurance will be heavily taxed (and those who choose not to have insurance will be heavily taxed) ... so that these taxes are used to pay for the government "option" -- an option that would not exist at all without STEALING from the American people. The government "option" is completely unjust. The only moral health system is private healthcare.
I don't know if it's in the bill, but hey, I'm still voting yes. Who cares if it's constitutional!
Good to see you didn't let that "car insurance" question throw you off. I wonder why we don't need an Auto Insurance Exchange (AIE) for appropriate insurance when driving on interstate highways. I'd better shut up before I give them any ideas and they invoke the commerce clause!
Government intrusion into healthcare is blatantly unconstitutional. That is profoundly important. Healthcare is just the latest excuse for the government to grab more power at the expense of the citizens. And once you authorize the government to steal For you, you also authorize the government to steal From you.
The host was very nice to all of us and the producers were great. They did want an open discussion. I have nothing but good things to say about WTTW Channel 11.
I can guarantee you they will be severely reprimanded for having allowed these questions to be asked of Durbin. They may lose some funding, and I'm sure this will be the last of this little foray into opening discussions to the other side.
Big surprise- Durbin doesn't even know what's in the house bill. We have not seen so many avg citizens (all sides) so engaged in yrs and he can't be bothered to read the stinking bill! Perhaps that's why he refused to do town hall mtgs? Tragedy! It's time for voters to re-think their elected officials in IL...clearly.
Dick Durbin is a lying tool...he compared our troops to Nazis, the Khmer Rouge and Soviet gulag guards. Please Illinois replace this parasitic troll with someone who actually wants to represent you (not himself) and who will defend American and the Constitution against all enemies foreign and domestic...Durbin has betrayed his oath of office and his country and has become a domestic enemy himself...vote him out of office so he can go "terrorize" his own family not us.
I have to watch these videos, but they make me so mad. They wanna push this bill through but could care less what is says and how it affects Americans.
Lastly, we can expect Durbin to vote the way Rahn Emanual & Obama tells him how to vote.
Durbin has a safe seat, as he's not up for re-election 2010. However, a seat held by Burris will be heavily contested by republicans. Durbin can mess it up for other democrats in Illinois.
Some blacks in Illinois got 1 track mind & taste of power is addictive. They will get mad if they don't get a black to replace Burris. So Durbin's got some ass kissing to do to keep blacks from switching party.
Kevin, good luck to you. Not a surprise that Durbin doesn't know EVEN THE BASICS about what's in the bill but sickening nevertheless.
Durbin is an Illinois tool. Look at him feign concern. Yet the d*mn bill DOESN'T INCLUDE TORT REFORM. Nor will members of congress participate in this insurance plan. SAY NO until CONGRESS MAKES THE SAME SACRIFICES AS IT ASKS CITIZENS TO DO.
If he believes that folks must have OPTIONS (to be written into the law), does this mean that the citizen has choice to opt in or out. And if not, then who does he feel should be charged for breaking that law. The citizen or the insurance company.
Opps! I almost forgot that the insurance companies will be the GOVERNMENT.
When you asked Durbin if he would oppose mandate in the Sen. He responded that he has to see how its written.
However, Durbin arguments to the previous citizen expressed support for mandate. His arguments supported the belief that insurance is a RIGHT so as to spare folks from bankruptcy; & that this should be a MANDATORY OPTION.
OPTION is a choice & its the opposite of MANDATORY. Mandate carries penalties. Yet, he indicated he supports OPTION, but he dodged the "mandate" question.
You're right, Arlene. He was dodging every question. If it's a question about the Senate bill, every answer is "It's not written yet". If it's a question about the house bill, every answer is "I'm unfamiliar with the house bill".
Why have a congress when they rubber stamp Bills like cap and trade 1300 pages with out reading it ,that is a crime and they are traitors to the country and humans .
This is the problem. For too long they've just done what their fellow pals in congress wanted them to do, not because of the core bill but because of all the "goodies" in the bill. They have NO CLUE what they are voting for or against. Also they could care less what those of us who are supposed to be the "represented" want. The frauds are being exposed. We need to clear the crooks out!! Bravo. Great job. Thanks for sharing:)
Oh yea, O was being questiond on provision in the House bill, by the netroots and he said "Oh, uh, I don't know what's IN the House bill" & but blah blah blah. So, HE dosent even know whats in the friggen' bill, and Spector is going "& we've got to pass these bills fast" & the audience lets him have it.

There are two arguments to be made here. The first is that we as a country cannot afford it.
The second is that if the public option is part of the new law, then that will end up being your only option. The reason is because your employer will have a choice between paying between $6,000 and $8,000 for your private insurance, or they could choose to pay the 8% additional payroll tax of about $4,000, or less, to opt you into the public plan; you will not have a choice, the choice is theirs.
jbranstetter04 2 years ago
well to counter your argument, i think that in the bill it prohibits businesses from enrolling in a public option for at least a couple years.
Within that time frame, it's quite possible that the private industry will be able to compete by reducing fees which might make your "$6000 and $8000" estimate more like $6000 and $6000.
gsadler82 2 years ago
To understand what would really happen one only has to look at the other federally funded public option system. Education. There is private education and the public option. Private education always costs more. The public option wont make it costs cheaper. It sets the price and drives the cost up from there. It's no secret the per pupil costs have risen dramatically. While private costs spike with it. Compitition between companies are eliminated and an orderly increase in costs are the result.
mickeysears 2 years ago
Although public schools receive some funding from the Federal Govt, most comes from county taxes.
When you say "Private education always costs more' are you talking school expenses or tuition fees? On average local schools pay $10k per child, yet most private school tuition is under $10k. In a nut shell, private schools are more efficient and keep costs reduced.
A public opt. will be funded by user fees w/ some subsidies, where as education is completely subsidized. Apples and oranges.
gsadler82 2 years ago
Actually the cost of private education is a lot lower than public; as little as $2,500 for elementary grades.
I don't think that this can be compared to health care because there is no rationing involved, just inept administration.
jbranstetter04 2 years ago
Well, to counter your argument. How will requiring the insurance companies to except preexisting conditions, to reduce co-pays and deductibles, and to raise their maximum expenditure limits (on lifetime payouts), how will this lower their costs?
jbranstetter04 2 years ago
Just remember that the bill is still being worked out, and you're making some assumptions here that won't make any sense if they are in the final bill.
To answer your question on how costs would be reduced...although it sounds tough, mandating every person have health insurance will increase demand. I'm not necessarily for that but that is one way it could happen.
There are a number of arguments both sides have come up with that would help , unfortunately partisanship gets in the way.
gsadler82 2 years ago
My personal "real" health insurance is what is called catastrophic insurance. It's $165 a month. My annual deductible is $2,500. My total annual out of pocket amount is $5,000. The lifetime maximum that they will spend on me is $1,000,000.
This plan will no longer be available with most of the plans going through congress. So how will that increase choice? How will that make it better for me? They will limit choice, freedom, and make things worse.
jbranstetter04 2 years ago
can you quote some text on what you're saying? all i've heard is that the maximum coverages are going up, not deductables or monthly fees.
gsadler82 2 years ago
Unintended consequences? Maybe not.
We need to be very careful before we fundamentally change something so personal as our health care. With some things, there's no going back. If something is rushed through without us knowing the unintended consequences, then we may live to regret it for the rest of our lives.
Here's an interesting article on what we will lose with some of the changes proposed:
5 freedoms you'd lose in health care reform
We need to be careful or we may end up with less.
jbranstetter04 2 years ago
i do agree that a fundamental change in something as personal as health care is something that shouldn't be rushed. this discussion goes back at least over 10 years ago so it's not something that's been thought up in recent months.
if anything, a public option would mirror medicaid in the sense of how the government is involved in it. the way i see a public option is medicaid that people pay for as they go, instead of what medicaid actually is...you pay before you are eligible for it.
gsadler82 2 years ago
Obama's on record as being in favor of single payer health care (government run health care). There are those around him who are on record as saying that a government option is a foot-in-the-door to getting a single payer system. This is why we need to be careful.
Obama wanted all of this done by the end of July. If that would have happened, then we would have had no debate, we would have just been stuck with whatever they put together behind close doors. The town halls changed all of that.
jbranstetter04 2 years ago
hell i'm all for a single payer system too...at least the federal insurance is accountable to the people and not the wealthy stock owners.
look overseas and you will find single payer systems that work...and yes, there is still capitalistic competition involved...check out france or even a system that's not federally funded but federally mandated like in switzerland.
gsadler82 2 years ago
Obama says that health care is being rationed right now by the insurance companies, but he is wrong. It is not being rationed. Your health, and the care of it is your responsibility. Health insurance companies are just providing a service that you chose to purchase. How is that rationing anything? However, if the government is the provider, then there will be rationing; they will decide.
If you are poor then you can go on Medicaid. If you are not poor then you need to prioritize your purchases.
jbranstetter04 2 years ago
current health care is rationed...those with preconditions or the elderly are often denied. that is common knowledge.
if the government insures everyone, there will be no rationing...as everyone will be covered.
in addition, think of the expenses not covered by health insurers...people are going broke to pay for their health care.
i don't think i've heard of one person going broke who was covered by medicare.
gsadler82 2 years ago
Then let's do something about the preconditions problem without throwing everything out. There are a lot of things that can be done short of giving control of our hearth care to a government that can't even balance its budget for the last 40 years and that is running us into insolvency.
Allow interstate purchasing of health insurance. Pass a portability law. There is a lot of reform to be done that does not enhance the governments power over us.
jbranstetter04 2 years ago
control of health care won't be given to the government...only the funding of it. just like medicare is only funded by the government, so will a public option.
it's all about who gets the money...the capitialists are fighting hard to propagandize health care reform to make sure their investors m
gsadler82 2 years ago
The government does control health care for the elderly. They are setting the prices that doctors receive for procedures. This is how it will be if they take control of our care. And in fact they will take even more away from the elderly because there is not enough doctors to cover 45 million more Americans, and to make it worse, doctors will be leaving because they will be making less money when the feds take over.
jbranstetter04 2 years ago
think about what you just said.
more demand equals financial security for doctors.
how can you think doctors will make less money when the feds take over? if a doctor wants to continue to only accept private insurance, then they'll continue to get that pay.
if a doctor wants to get a steady amount of patients, then they will.
i don't know one doctor that'll quit the business just because they are getting paid less...that made me laugh out loud.
gsadler82 2 years ago
...the capitialists are fighting hard to propagandize health care reform to make sure their investors make their profits, but at what expense? it's all about money, at least in my opinion i would give that money to the government...a government that is accountable to the people.
health care should be something everyone is entitled to and that's the bottom line. the status quo isn't working and hasn't for the last few decades, it's time we stop letting companies profit over our health.
gsadler82 2 years ago
I guess we have a fundamental disagreement that will not be resolved with debate. I believe that health care is not a right. I believe that you are responsible for your own care, and that the farther that care is removed from the individual, then the more expensive, and the worse that care will become. Do we agree to disagree?
jbranstetter04 2 years ago 2
not sure what you mean by that, but i do think that health care should be available to all without the risks of bankruptcy. if you think otherwise, you are a very self serving person.
think about national security and the well being of the entire country. think about fire and police protection, road and food safety, air and water safety...
it sounds like you wouldn't be for any of those if you're not for an available option for health care for all. after all, health care sums up all of those.
gsadler82 2 years ago
The only responsibility that government has is to provide us with what is outlined in the Constitution. They are only supposed to guarantee us the freedom to pursue our happiness, and that is all. How do you mix health care in with that? Are you going by the Constitution, or are you going by your heart?
How do you figure that they have the right to take my money and then give it to another for health care? This is nothing like the military, which is there to allow us to pursue happiness.
jbranstetter04 2 years ago
the responsibility of the government is to be voice for the people and to make changes that better the lives of all americans.
since we live in a democratically elected republic, this is how domestic and foreign policies are made.
they have a right to spend money on whatever the people allow them too, which in this case i think it's more important to spend billions on it's own people than overseas on unnecessary wars that seem to be profiting companies who make bombs.
gsadler82 2 years ago
You are wrong. The states and the people created the federal government to do only those things that the states, or the people, could not do for themselves; see the 10th Amendment; read the Constitution.
They don't have the right to spend money on whatever the people "allow". Once again, refer to the Constitution. There are limits on the federal government; they are limited by the Constitution.
Roosevelt in 37', threatened to "pack" the Supreme Court, and that is when it all went wrong.
jbranstetter04 2 years ago 2
I do wish your health insurance company could compete with the ones in our state! I just priced some out at 50% higher premium with less deductible and less annual maximum $ paid. That was after going through several more higher priced ones.
Americans need choices like this to help lower costs and make our health care system even better.
CPAsheldon 2 years ago
Yes it would be nice if they made a federal law allowing people to purchase health insurance across states lines, but that would only empower the people, and not the government, therefore the democrats would be against it.
Otacon237 2 years ago 2
"If you like your insurance, you can keep it..."
And, we know it will balloon the national debt.

yes, the government will FORCE us to take their "option".

Some blacks in Illinois got 1 track mind & taste of power is addictive. They will get mad if they don't get a black to replace Burris. So Durbin's got some ass kissing to do to keep blacks from switching party.
arlenearmy 2 years ago
Kevin, good luck to you. Not a surprise that Durbin doesn't know EVEN THE BASICS about what's in the bill but sickening nevertheless.
Durbin is an Illinois tool. Look at him feign concern. Yet the d*mn bill DOESN'T INCLUDE TORT REFORM. Nor will members of congress participate in this insurance plan. SAY NO until CONGRESS MAKES THE SAME SACRIFICES AS IT ASKS CITIZENS TO DO.
AnnieSweetieOakley 2 years ago 2
The follow-up question to Durbin is:
If he believes that folks must have OPTIONS (to be written into the law), does this mean that the citizen has choice to opt in or out. And if not, then who does he feel should be charged for breaking that law. The citizen or the insurance company.
Opps! I almost forgot that the insurance companies will be the GOVERNMENT.
arlenearmy 2 years ago
When you asked Durbin if he would oppose mandate in the Sen. He responded that he has to see how its written.
However, Durbin arguments to the previous citizen expressed support for mandate. His arguments supported the belief that insurance is a RIGHT so as to spare folks from bankruptcy; & that this should be a MANDATORY OPTION.
OPTION is a choice & its the opposite of MANDATORY. Mandate carries penalties. Yet, he indicated he supports OPTION, but he dodged the "mandate" question.
arlenearmy 2 years ago
You're right, Arlene. He was dodging every question. If it's a question about the Senate bill, every answer is "It's not written yet". If it's a question about the house bill, every answer is "I'm unfamiliar with the house bill".
