@ZR1Terror Yup, iMovie 11. Just basic cuts really, and a title with some black fade transitions. Zero color correction, I just wanted to see how the footage looked straight out of the camera!
@PAINmedia The nice thing about the web is that it makes it hard to tell what the footage was actually shot on. You can even do quasi-DOF in software if you want...
@dim93270 I like the Olloclip the best. I don't really care for the image quality from the 8x Telescopic lens. The OWLE Bubo (now mCam) is really neat, but twice the price of the Olloclip and much larger. But you can use a dSLR adapter from enCinema on it if you'd like to use real camera lenses.
@TedzMultimedia Fluid head. It's similar to a tripod head on a photo tripod, but instead of clicking, it has a thick dampening fluid inside to let you make smooth pans. The good ones have adjustable fluid tension knobs so you can tweak how fast or slow the smooth pan goes. I'm using a Velbon DV-7000 tripod kit.
@MOROKOSINO1 Thanks! Yeah I have a T2i, I haven't touched it in awhile lol. Really the biggest thing lacking from a dSLR is shallow DOF. If you shoot right, you can get some DOF, and of course you can add it in plugins in post if you really want to.
@nr1Nerd The camera is on a glidetrack, sort of like a train rail for cameras. It lets you slide side to side really nicely. Makes the footage look way more professional imo!
@belbers9715 Also be careful of different lenses. Apple doesn't certify magnetic lenses for use on the iPhone, so stuff like Photojojo or those cheapo Chinese ones might not be safe for use (also the picture quality was not as good). If I had the cash, I'd do the iPro Lens System from Schneider Optics, but it's $200 and doesn't include a Macro. That's the best I've seen. But the Olloclip is so portable.
@nowphilming Great video! I'm sooooo impressed. Nice job, really. I watch it again and again. I have a few questions to you. 1.What lens did you use? 2.How many hours/days did you spend for doing this video?:) 3.What about iphone 4, not 4s?I want to do the same video by iphone 4, can I hope that my video will be as good as yours?;)
@IlienkoFangAkopyan Thank you! Re: (1) I used an Olloclip. The best combination of price/functionality for the iPhone 4/4S imo. (2) I took about 2 hours of footage the farm, then edited it in iMovie for maybe 4-5 hours on & off. Mostly sifting through clips. (3) The iPhone 4 has a great 720p camera. Check out the "Goldilocks" series, shot on an iPhone 4 and iPod Touch. You can do a lot with some creativity! Definitely get the Filmic Pro app, it gives you the most control over your image.
@IlienkoFangAkopyan I thought Goldilocks was pretty good! I think it's cool what people are doing with cell phones & iPods. I like the concept of shooting movies on a cell phone...I want to do a lot more of it...
@AliAmer00 if you are uploading it directly to youtube from the phone it will only upload 720p in order to get 1080p videos you must first upload it to the computer to something like iMovie mac or movie maker windows and then save it as 1080p and export it from there! hope that helped! check out my channel!
Smallville's home! =) Great shot. Cuz of that, I bought Filmic Pro. :o) I already own an OlloClip. Finally something I can lock exposure and focus independently.
@kibbycabbit Yeah, it's the best app ever. I use Camera+ & ProCamera for stills (both do the same thing - Focus & Exposure Lock). I have a lot of fun with those apps & the Olloclip!
@aaspri Velbon DV-7000, which includes the Velbon PH-368 fluid head. It's pretty much the cheapest fluid head I've ever found, and it works great! I usually use a scrunchie (fluffy girl's hair band) to dampen the movements (it's like a more flexible rubber band, which helps to smooth out your hand jitter).
@koz1769 Basically on a fluid tripod head (smooth instead of clickity like a photo tripod head), you have the head with a handle sticking out. Normally when you move the handle, it is subject to how shaky your hand is. So you put a rubber band on it - loop one end on your finger and the other on the handle and pull, like tug-of-war. Except a girl's hair scrunchie is even smoother and dampens your hand shake, so you get a nice smooth movement with a smooth start and smooth finish. Make sense?
hey man, nice video. Im shooting the month of January on the 4s for my show. And in my tests, i've found that my phone is automatically shooting in 24.00 fps, when supposedly it shoots @ 30 fps (so says apple site). Is there an app that you used to get true 24p, or like me, did it just shoot in 24 automatically?
@FilmIn5D The iPhone shoots natively at 30fps. What is probably happening is that you have your editing timeline set to 24fps and it's converting the video for you. 30fps to 24fps conversion doesn't look right in a lot of situations (especially lip sync). Thus, you need to use an aftermarket app to get true 24fps. In this case, I used Filmic Pro. It's like three bucks and it's awesome!
@nowphilming yea i have that too now. The thing is i have premiere pro, which tells you the exact specs of a clip regardless of the timeline, and it says 24.00 fps even if i just use the app that came with the phone
@nowphilming okay so I figured it out... unless you are using filmic pro (i.e. the app that comes with the iphone, or another app like almost DSLR), you cannot lock the frame rate. If you shoot in low light, the camera will automatically shoot @ 24 fps... but when shooting in good lighting conditions it shoots in 30 fps... which kinda sucks because I was shooting a skit last night and 2 shots of my 40 shots were at 24 instead of 30.
@FilmIn5D Whoa, news to me! That's really weird. I did some research online and apparently it lowers the framerate to 24fps in low-light conditions to compensate for the lack of available light. I'd imagine the filmic blur looks better in that situation and makes the image look a bit better by masking the noise etc. Very interesting, nice find! I pretty much only use Filmic Pro anyway - not just to lock the framerate, but also to lock focus & exposure. Especially exposure!
@CrazySourcePlayer A tripod. The pan & tilt motion using a video head called a Fluid Head, which is smooth instead of clicky like a photo tripod head. For the sliding shots, a special rail called a Glidetrack.
@nowphilming alright, thanks for the info and video, the colors and sharpness of the video makes me second guess why i bought the 550d. keep up the good work!
@CrazySourcePlayer Yeah, I love my 550d, but my iPhone is always right in my pocket, so it's just waaaay too handy. The only thing I'm really missing is an optical zoom or a good telephoto. I've checked out the ones from Photojojo, enCinema, etc. but I haven't found anything I really like yet. The 8x telephotos look bad and the SLR lens adapters either lose too much light or have the screendoor effect.
@clubhappybest Thanks! Yes, it does very well with a lot of light. And it does surprisingly well without much light if you clean up the footage using NeatVideo & some basic color grading. Not as good as say a 5D MKII, but not bad for a cell phone!
@SinkingShipOfFools I have the original files if you'd like to take a peek. You can check out my blog (see description) for some behind-the-scenes shots. This was filmed using an iPhone 4S with a Velbon DV-7000 tripod and a Glidetrack SD sliding track. What makes it look professional is (1) using stabilization equipment, (2) using the 24p framerate, (3) controlling the exposure via the Filmic Pro app, and (4) using editing software. With that said, thank you for the compliment :)
@tybreezy1997 Yes, this was made completely with an iPhone 4S using the Filmic Pro app. I use a tripod and a Glidetrack rail for the shots. The video was editing in iMovie on a Mac.
Hey great video! I noticed some compression artifacts; is that because of YouTube or will there be blocky artifacts in the darker areas in the original vide? Thank you!
@olofin The original video is pretty clean. Youtube does add some artifacts. I've also noticed Youtube (Flash) struggles with clipping some of the camera movements.
At 48 MB/s, the 1080p master clips are surprisingly clean. I've found that the NeatVideo plugin helps to clean up artificacts (noise etc.) in low-light conditions quite a bit, and some basic color correction can really make the footage pop. The iPhone footage has a surprising amount of dynamic range.
@TheCompatibleShow 24p is for the film look. Commercials & news are shot in 30p; films are shot in 24p. Have you ever been watching a movie on TV and it switches to a commercial, and you can tell from the way the commercial looks right away that it's a commercial? Similar to if you're watching COPS - 30p looks more home video-ish, whereas 24p looks more filmic.
I took this app for a test run on a dance performace, shooting the overview with a 4S and details with a 5D. It ran for 1.5 hours. When stopped the movie didn't process and the data is gone. SUPPORT HAVN'T RESPONDED TO 3 EMAILS.
@cha0smoon Filmic Pro has been slightly buggy in my experience. The good news is, they update the app on a regular basis. So far, it's been the best iPhone filming app that I've found. Personally, I would not use it to record long sequences such as a dance performance; I've found that it is better suited to do shorter clips like for short films. You may look into something like a Panasonic TM900K for long recordings and use your 5D for the detail shots.
hey awesome video! I film a lot and recently got an iphone 4s. my usual workflow consists of using mpeg stream-clip to convert to apple pro res 422 and ship it off to fcp. but i cant figure out the best workflow for the iphone. all the shots are sideways and im curious what your method is
@Maxamillion300 Have you tried using Compressor instead of MPEG Streamclip? I'm still developing my workflow too - I am also using ProRes for my current projects, although the file sizes are killing me with the hard drive shortages, haha.
@Maxamillion300 I've read that a lot of people like MPEG Streamclip more, but I don't know if that's because it's free or what. Personally I just use Compressor - it's really easy to use. There's a nice plugin called CRAMcompressor that lets you export to a lot of different formats using presets. If it weren't for the hard drive shortages & price spike, I'd just convert all my shots into ProRes and call it a day. I saw a single 4TB drive at Best Buy the other day for $199...
@nowphilming it sounds like MPEG Sreamclip and Compressor are fairly similar. I convert to ProRes LT which is a bit smaller then delete the original footage. Every 3 or 4 edits I put the old footage on an external hard drive. I haven't run into any problems yet but ive only been filming for a year haha.
@LegitMeow Thanks! I kidnapped JJ Abrams and made him write a Star Trek app for my iPhone to do the lens flare. I kid, I kid :) The 4S does lens flares like 100% better than the iPhone 4 does. Also I am uses an Olloclip (fisheye & wide-angle lenses) for most of the shots. Having bright lights, like at the crack of dawn, and a lot of existing visual flare also helps. Of course, you can also add it in post, like with a Digital Film Tools or Video Copilot plugin.
@LegitMeow I used a Glidetrack SD for the sliding shots. It mounts on my tripod and lets my put my Fluid Head on top for the pans & tilts. The last shot in the video is a sliding shot with a pan, looks pretty cool I think. Glidetrack just released a new version called the Mobislyder made specificially for iPhones & small cameras, I believe the US pre-order price is $135. Also check out the Pico Flex Dolly, another cool sliding/rotational shot tool.
@mosslack Thanks! So much easier to shoot with than my dSLR...do the white balance, lock the focus, then lock the exposure & shoot. Swapping lenses takes seconds with the Olloclip. The fisheye almost turns into an ultra-wide with the video crop, which I really liked for the landscape & architecture shots - really nice effect.
Next project is to add some color grading to the stock footage and see how much I can make the footage "pop" :D
This is amazing. Simply beautiful. I hope you do many more. This is really beautiful.

Hey, amazing video, I was wondering how those lens flares were possible? and what did you use to slide so smoothly?
LegitMeow 2 months ago
