I love sparring. You just have to keep your hands up and relax. I know its hard to do that in the heat of sparring. Bruce Lee said sparring is the main thing to do because its the only way to see how good you are and what you could do in real life.
@KarateGrappling haha, so do I! it's intense, especially if you are up against someone better than you, once I started sparring, I discovered how to practice :)
@eteune We were able to record the sparring portion of tonight's brown belt test. See: attached video response.
The camera app crashed (without saving) after the first minute of recording & had to be restarted, resulting in the loss of almost the first two minutes of the match. =(
@RicochetRita yes, just as I suspected, after the first couple of minutes, snails pace, no speed and no power. I real fight does not last 10-12 minutes. Sparring needs to be about speed and power. That is why doing sparring for more than a couple minutes is NOT effective, good for endurance, I suppose, but it stops being sparring and just has some hapless practitioner doing meaningless moves hardly moving their arms or legs at all after the first few minutes. You confirmed my suspicion.
@RicochetRita having said that, I think 3 minute rounds are perfect. If you really put everything in and keep the speed up for 3 minutes, I think that is effective. 10 minutes? 12 minutes? 20 minutes straight? Effectiveness of training drops to zero.
@RicochetRita but this is just my amateur opinion, have not even attained first degree Black Belt yet, so take it all with grain of salt. Thank you, BTW for sharing this.
@eteune No offense intended! I've been following your belt progress (& weapons videos), with great interest. Please keep posting!
We do have a senior purple testing for her brown belt this week, but it's pretty late to line up a video.
...and 12+ mins IS a long time, especially when proceeded & followed by calisthenics. Our physical req's increase with each degree (testing black belts spar for a full 20 mins, including multiple opponents). Def harder for older practitioners, like us! =)
@RicochetRita none taken, but I would like to see anyone do actual sparring for 12 minutes straight, even professional fighters do not do that. Let's see a video of someone sparring for 12 minutes straight and I will believe you.
@RicochetRita I don't see any videos on your channel, I would like to see anyone do sparring for 12.5 minutes, especially someone who is 49 years old :)
@hamster130 weeeelllll, this isn't Hapkido sparring, just Taekwondo sparring unfortunately, but I should keep my hands up anyway, hard to remember these things when actually sparring though! :)
seriously not bad at all, keep practicing, sparring (and Hapkido) is actually very difficult to do well. Most people who have never sparred do not realize that.
@AlanMolstad thank you very much for your kind comments. Yes, she claimed twice that I was low kicking because our shins hit a couple times, but I watched this video like 10 times and we both just had our legs up at the same time is all. I thought I was going to get my ass kicked. This student is very strong and fast with her kicks and is usually very aggressive, so I came out attacking right away. Little did she know I was intimidated by her and so was just trying to compensate for that :)

However, we did capture the remaining 10:45.

@eteune was the sparring a part of your belt test? If so, it seemed brief. Our brown belts have to spar 12.5 mins during theirs.

I thought you did a great job.
You handled yourself with good form and you were great.
Now the last half of the video is all about the sparing, and this one weird moment where you two smack legs.
I feel it was just a smack, not a low hit..She and you both had legs up and went smack.
To be expected...
Good job all the way around.

@eteune The first part of your video shows you working very well with your drills and you seem very well taught on how to do all the things needed.
the girl U were sparing was a very good kicker.
You really notice there is years of difference in your styles, she was very good at her kicks.
But the "smack" was just an accident, you both just kicked and hit legs.
But you sure were able to get past this and she clearly was not.
