  • he's the only violinist i've seen who fingers the end of the big D-major arpeggios 1-3-4-4, instead of the usual 1-2-3-4. he can get away with it at this moderate tempo. his fingering is a bit more secure, better chance of being in tune.

  • BRAVISSIMO SHLOMO MINTZ!!!

  • Damn it. Nice!

  • The incredible Mintz ! In my opinion this part of the Sibelius violin concerto should be played like that. The ending was amazing.

  • ES DIOS

  • @frederickgauss Si es Dios

  • How the hell is he not more famous?

  • @MDbam He is pretty famous...

  • @ leppettu see: movie scores (ie dark knight)

  • Best version on youtube

  • @spiked415 watch ferras...

  • @MarlowStardust I have.. not able to reach the subtlest of shadings and colors Mintz exhibits with his superb bowhand

  • WTF! this is so awesome! wish i can do that too. -_-

  • There's no reason why concertos with this sort of power couldn't be written today, but where are they?

  • wow is the conductor esa pekka salonen?

  • Really great! very beautiful and daring ;)

  • Magnífico! Dios mío....Sibelius Maestro!! me hace vibrar completamente...

  • Magnífico! Dios mío....Sibulius Maestro!! me hace vibrar completamente

  • muy largo, mejor era incomplete

  • @JuanAlbertoGuerra1

  • absolutely outstanding!!!!

  • Well u have a point , however one can't deny that he does play very well , but I do see your point.

  • With all due respect to those who like this, I listened to it and totally didn't understand what was going on there. For me, it was way too heavy-handed and sloppy. But then I listened to the Vengerov clip ("Maxim Vengerov - Sibelius - Allegro ma non tanto") and he makes Mintz sound like a kid trying to tune a violin. Sorry, just my opinion.

  • @allergyforsun "With all due respect" is hardly the way to begin something that ends with "like a kid trying to tune a violin." This isn't my favorite recording of Mintz, but it played with great intonation, tempo, & with grace. Listen to the Heifetz recording-- no one compares to that one.

  • El concertino es Bush

  • ES DIOS

  • dear god.... i wonder how much dd he suffer to get that one at such a perfect timing an afination >w< damnit awesomeeee!!!! he seems like posessed xD

  • boo.

just kidding. it was fantastic. his expressions are priceless

  • Sibelius couldn't have said it better himself. lol

I wonder why some people didn't like it?

  • Comment removed

  • old school

  • oh my god. sibelius got pwnd

  • this is brilliant. He does look at the conductor like a bit of a teacher's pet doesn't he? =P 'Sir, Sir! Look what I'm doing Sir!' lol

  • 7:22 what happened with his head? jaja

    I like his Sibelius interpretation.

  • My God, this guy plays it better than others

  • @0Nathre0 Hm, come to think of it, he does doesn't he! lol

  • That just blew my socks off! Along with a few other parts.......We will be playing this piece in our March 2011 concert - Northwest Chicago Symphony

  • the conductor is rather precious - is he

    auditioning for Hollywood ?

  • Fantastic spirit. This is the way music should always be played.

  • 1:25 "FUCK YEAH CUNT I'M CONDUCTING THIS BITCH ASS"

  • @KhoaFTL haha

  • One of the most outstanding performance !!! His bowing and phrasing are just perfect.

  • what happen with his face? jaja

  • @veidhleadoir what do you even mean? it is obviously the face of awesomeness!

  • @emarum haha good answer xD

  • WOW =) I love this performance.....

  • Superb! TY.

  • Now I'm a big fan, however this is the most raucous and obnoxious Sibelius I have yet heard...

  • @winrx agreed

  • Shlomo is an amazing violinist and a truly great musician! This is such a captivating performance.

  • I love how he shakes his head in the beginning theme hehe

  • what a powerful player!!!!!! simply magnificent

  • BRAVO

  • The man was a prodigy as a youth. He is "virtuoso". In my opinion, he is one of the greatest men alive when it comes to virtue.

Bravo, Shlomo! May you live one hundred years.

  • His sound is not very interesting (for me!)... rough and thin!

  • I don't understand why people don't talk about Shlomo Mintz in the same breadth as Heifetz and Oistrakh. He's gotta be in that same league. I can't stop listening to this masterpiece, which I think , at least for this specific instance, is better than Heifetz's and Oistrakh's.

  • depinga

  • me encantaa genial

  • every time! just blows me away

  • now, who will gonna say hileri's video is better?

  • Wonderful job, but what a slow arm!!!

  • He moved the wrist instead. Very clever.

  • he doesen t use the wrist at all

  • @jasonform I noticed that too. Makes his tone static and not dynamic at all.

  • @ModernRitual euh, I don't agree with that.. Why would he use his wrist? He can make perfect bow changes without moving the wrist.. I think moving your wrist more (like Perlman) is just another way of bowchange technique, but doesn't affect the tone quality too much..

  • I often find other versions of this a bit heavy or sticky like glue, but not this one! It just floats along

  • That was absolutely fantastic. Wonderful. Amazing. Inspiring (and awe-inspiring) Thank you for posting. :)))

  • Salonen conducts the best Sibelius.

  • He might, but if you're speaking of the recording with Hilary Hahn I must disagree. She ruins the third movement, there is no articulation whatsoever, just overblown and unnecessary tenutos that ruin the whole character.

  • the true spirit of Music

  • looks like Lu Si-qing.

  • im so glad this is also a vid as well as audio. just look how absorbed he is in the music, yet still totally connected to the orchestra. fire emotion and passion and sheer unsurpassed excellence

  • Certified Intergalactic! The best in recent years!

  • nonetheless, he is one of my favourite conductors of all time. he conducts with elegance yet precise.

and shlomo mintz with exceptional techniques.

    watch 1:58

  • Wow, didn't notice that. He actually manages to make it sound crisp and right on!

  • It's Salonen!!!

  • amazing!

  • The conductor seems to be Esa Pekka Salonen

  • the conductor conducts funny. he holds his arms close to his side and doesnt move his upper arms much.

  • and Shlomo has his jowls flopping, but the music is incredible. Close your eyes and enjoy.

  • @calloffthedogs heheh love ur expression.

  • lol you are funny.

    you know who he is?

the great former director of LA Phil

    ESA PEKKA SALONEN.

  • @ZeroX810 apparantly, nope. i apologize for my ignorance.

  • i love watching this man play. how he feels the music, and nearly skips to it near 5:30, is pleasant and beautiful to watch.

  • Its the sibelius violin concerto

  • dude, he's such a badass in this piece!

    DAYUMN!

  • bravo

  • Increible, la mejor version.

  • That guy needs a haircut. It's flappin' all over the place

  • He looks really relaxed o.o

  • tango? sorry no, that reminds me polonaise 3/4 (1:23-1:26) here we are: ta ta ta ta taa- ta... polonaise is: taa- ta ta ta ta... i dont know maybe someone help me, sorry if my comment (taa..) sounds funny :P

  • Of course you are right. Donald Tovey once described this movement as a "polonaise for polar bears" - but there were also critics that were remindend of a bolero. You see: A very "european" movement indeed.

  • Curious Mintz performance Mintz in this "tango" moment

  • Magic bow? Magic hands!

  • Magic BOW!!!!!

  • fantastyc!!! musically and violinsticlly

I have always been curious about his right hand technic so unique and so presure based!! it isnt right like scholasticly talking but it work fantastyc for him! so once agun it just prove position is just personal

  • The classiest Sibelius EVER!

  • 1:52 that's my jam.

i can listen to this part all day long

  • What violin does he play here?

  • i really like this but from 5:00 to 6:31 should be more desperate sounding

  • Is that Salonen conducting?

  • yes!

  • nn sò che dire!!!!è il migliore

  • some slides really piss me off

  • this violin sounds great

  • this kicks some serious ass

  • this is a great rendition here - full of fire and pasion

  • SHLOMO THE GREAT!!

  • this is absolutely fantastic. i love his interpretation!! make's me feel so great!

  • i don't really like shlomo mintz, but this is really good!!

  • Ferras is still my favorite on this.

  • yeah mine too but this is still damn good...it's like he's possessed! haha

  • It's things like this that make me love youtube and the internet as a whole: there is just such a wide texture of culture that one never really had access to with such ease.

  • I was listening to a masterclass of him today and he really isnt in good shape anymore! Very scratchy and bad intonation!

I guess he is more an conductor today...

  • :ooooooooooooooooooooooooo

    mouth drops on floor.....

  • i like his playing, but when he shakes his heads while he plays that scares me.

  • thats my pops!!

  • Sure it is. Ask him if I can borrow his violin!

  • Before I realized this was on youtube I had another performance selected as what I thought best--Shlomo's artistic interpretation and technical command is simply stellar; I don't think another violinist can touch him.

  • Gidon Kremer, James Ehnes, Leonidas Kavakos, Maxim Vengerov... and I'm fairly sure Perlmann can still play. I'm not convinced this guy is any better than them. That said his bowing is utterly awesome.

  • Wow, What a bow technique!!!!He makes me almost laughing for how he superates technical difficulties which in the Sibelius are diabolic. I 'm studing this concert now and I think I'll take some ideas from him.

No doubt, one of the greatest ever!!

  • I watched this clip in a music appreciation class and I LOVE it!!!

  • HIS BOWING IS FANTASTIC.

  • WOW his violin projects so well!!!

  • Jascha and Hi are GOD's, no question about!!!

  • mamma mia che emozione!!!!

  • wow this is amazing! So perfect. Just like his caprices :)

  • this is my favourite! perfect

  • i know i said this before but does anyione else think the really visible cellist looks like michael cane?? closure...lol

  • Me encanta su fuerza. Es Hermoso.

  • 1:59...i'm speechless! he's so amazing.

  • when you actually play the piece, 2:17 is way harder to sound nice.

that's a series of chords that heifetz murdered.

  • Chilling. I had the pleasure of listening to Maxim Vengerov perform this at Carnegie under the direction of Riccardo Chailly in 1996. Thank you for posting.

  • I like it so much!Which orchestra& conductor perform here????I have CD -this concerto with Shlomo Mintz, but not the same orchestra...

    Thank you for this video!

  • the famous C.D is with James Levine and the Berlin Philharmonic

  • i've watched it 6 times and not had enough yet. i love this music.i love shlomo!

  • nice expression on this piece, Mintz brings his own interpretation to it. his left hand so free and bow hand in control, i have to say one of the best on Youtube next to Maxim Vengerov. great video-thanks for the post!

  • Did you see him go all that way up on the G string? xD

    Crazy.

  • nada k decir

    solo k es increible

  • perfect piece for his playing

  • It's just not human...

  • version sirupo-hysterique totalement géniale!!

  • Simply beautiful.

  • God... I bet all the composers in Heaven were like, you lucky fucking Sibelius! He just transcended your concerto into eternity. Heifetz would be smiling.

  • what's the slow-bow-thing? I don't think any of us know exactly what your talking aobut, and it's engendering negative comments...

  • it's either the thirds or the staccatos.

  • I think by "slow-bow thing" he was referring to how Mintz puts a relatively large amount of weight into his bow instead of using more speed (as Heifetz did). It's part of what contributes to Mintz's "economy of motion;" he uses more bow weight and less bow speed and therefore bow length than most other violinists. This technique gives Mintz a very solid, not airy tone. (cont'd ->)

  • However, this approach may backfire with advancing age because some individuals lose some sensitivity in their arms and fingers, and so cannot accurately gauge the amount of weight they actually are putting into the bow.

Unfortunately, this may have been the case for Mintz, or at least for his Ravel Tzigane video, in which his bow approach from the air to the string was incredibly rough and scratchy compared to that of his earlier years.

  • That makes sense I suppose, but it was still kind of vague. There are a good many places where he is moving the bow quite fast even with a heavy bow pressure. Whatever yoiu know? Anyways, good insights about pressure vs. speed Kyriaeus.

  • Advancing age? He is just 50 years old. Milstein and Heifetz were just really good and seasoned at that point. The lastest critic reviews from magazines such as Strad and critical reviews say this 50 year old is the best violinist on the planet having no techinal limitations. I would expect him to change his interpretations of pieces over time and experiment, interpretation is part of the art. At 50 he is just getting warmed up good; I expect more wonderful things from him.

  • The only bad thing about Mintz-once I hear him play something I am ruined to hear another play it! I agree with you Moonbeam, Mintz has only warmed his fingers. His recent Mozart CD is wonderful! His picture should be placed by the word stellar in the dictionary...

  • are you talking about the thirds?

it's supposed to be like that.

  • Wow, this is really something to watch over and over. How does he make it look so easy? I'll have to get the DVD to see all of this!

  • No matter how difficult pieces, his performance is very comfortable..

  • love the phrasing

  • the dark hair glasses cello guy looks like michael cane. hus with me?
