This young man's voice is just lovely and I don't know what the few complaints are all about. He may be "untrained" (I can't say since I'm not an expert) but he certainly has a natural talent. I enjoyed his performance very much and hope he continues to sing to this day--that would make him about 15 now. Just wonderful! Let us not forget that this is a very difficult piece of music. My high school choir did this over 35 years ago; it was very challenging!
Being in his native tongue is certainly a plus, but even in ones own language there are many variations in the way vowels are sung depending on where they lay in musical context. For ex, in English one sings "Lord" like LAWD to extend the vowel, If the singer actually pronounces too much of an r sound, it closes off the vowel giving an inferior sound. That's what I believe the last poster was talking about. And yes...the performer is wonderful.....perfect for the part!! Congratulations to him!
I agree with you, the boy is actually very charismatic but doesn't seem to have received canto instruction, his vowels are way too open and he does not sustain notes as a trained boy singer would.
His vowels are the correct due to he know and speak Hebrew regularly [He is Israeli just as I am].
But the overall performance is not refined. It doesn't seem that he understand the meaning of the words he sing...too weak in my opinion, but it is only my opinion.
@pila406 Personally, I sand this solo a few years ago and I think he does a wonderful job capturing the words of David in the 23rd Psalm...The Lord is my Shepherd. I shall not want.
He is awesome! I also hope he is still singing. I hope he cultivates this gift. I am in choir in college and we performed this piece. I wanted this solo so bad but I did not get it. Encourage him to keep on singing and to keep growing as a singer! :)

Just awful. Try the Kings College version. Berstein wrote this for a British choir. There is not a similar choral tradition in Isreal. This boy can't sing and he seems to snicker when he isn't singing.
I agree that it's not a great performance, but the boy can sing. He sings like a normal child with a nice voice, who hasn't had all that much training. He is actually pretty good when you compare him to the average kid off the street, and he is definitely not off in his notes. Just could have used a bit more instruction.
wow, this kid fits that part perfectly... i've seens other kids sing the boy's solo but they were all so fake and didn't seem to have the youthful sound
What a pure and faithful interpretation! Bernstein surely smiles down on you from the heavens!!! May you take the same unspoiled purity with you in your future steps as a musician. We love your recording!
I sang in the choir with Robert Shaw conducting the Cleveland Orchestra in 1965 when the work was brand new. I recall fondly the beauty of this movement with the innocence of the boy and the harp. This video brings it all back! He's got such a sweet tone and accurate pitch. He must have had a good coach or teacher. He must have music in his heart and mind. Bravo!!
Thanks for your lovely comment. There's in fact an even better sounding recording from the Abu Gosh church, from a performance which took place a few days late, which is currently being encoded and will be uploaded shortly.
This is the first video I've seen on here of this movement where the boy soloist sounds like it should. It is supposed to sound like a young boy singing, innocent and natural, and this little boy sounds great! My favorite video of this on youtube!

This child is hands-down the best soprano I have ever heard do this piece. Ever. He is so natural and strong and heartfelt.

Daniel sang the solo beautifully. He captured the innocence Bernstein intended for the part brilliantly. Literally brought tears to my eyes... Bravo!

I love the shy little smiles he gives after each bit he sings. His parents in the audience? Gorgeous.

This is lovely. And let me say, as a member of Oratorio, that we loved having Daniel sing with us.

@geriberi16 That's what I thought right from the start. He's perfect. The other ones I saw are very mannered and stiff.
