Beautiful machine, I want to thank those who make these works of the human mind, endure through time and thank you, pianoman1984 for sharing with us. One question, are they still making these "music machines"?
You're welcome about the sharing. The Hupfeld Phonoliszt-Violina is one my favorite orchestrions. Unfortunately they aren't made anymore, though the frim Wendell from Germany made several very good replicas some years ago.
It wasnt this instrument, but in fact a Welte Organ that was ment to go onto Titanics Sister ship the Britannic , she was launched in 1914 and sent straight to war , the Organ was to be installed upon her return, but she was lost at sea.The Welte organ of course survies today and is on display in a museum. All this can be proved as the organ to this day has builders pencil markings inside the woodwork naming the Britannic as the installation desination.
I wonder - who arranged this roll? Are the names of any of the Phonoliszt-Violina roll arrangers known, or were they kept shrouded in mystery like so many other "factory secrets"?
This particular roll seems to have a very personal cast to the music... perhaps the arranger dedicated it to a particular girl he knew?
The tune itself is pretty, I'm sure the composer must have written it for a girl he knew.
I can't tell, I didn't have a chance to look at the roll label, and I'm actually sure that it won't be on there anyway.... I have no idea about Hupfeld's Violina roll arrangers, but they were very very good. I'm trying to make a violina roll from scratch now, so I know how hard it is.. (even harder as I don't have and instrument to test it on, when I'm done I'll play it on this violina and place the result here...
WONDERFUL video! This is the first Phonoliszt-Violina I ever got to see... I was about 8 years old at the time. My mom saw it too and was awestruck. We are a musical family and so we are not easily awed by a cool gadget that plays music.
It is the realism, and sheer beauty of sound that amazed us, as well as my dad when he and I saw the model A Hupfeld at House On the Rock in 2006.
I have seen two or three more since then, (and heard recordings of others), but this is still my favorite!
Thankyou for sharing! , this is my all time Favorite instrument .Also a special thanks for your camera catching such beautiful pictures and clear sound. Its great to see this instrument in all its glory.....i feel like im seeing it with my own eyes A+++
These machines are absolutely fascinating. The amount of invention that went into the creation of such an involved instrument continues to boggle the mind! Thanks for the post - enjoyed it very much!
Pardon my ignorance, but could anyone tell me what the name of this song is? It's absolutely beautiful!

This machine is an masterpiece. There was life far before the electronic computers came out. :)

Every time I listen to this, a tear rolls down my eye.
It's probably the best orchestrion made!

Filmpje mooi gemonteerd en met behoud van het muziekpatroon en de aanslag op de violen, heb je de film 2 keer opgenomen? of met 2 camera's?
Goed gedaan ~!
