@bluewavefilm - I read you - it is somewhat easy to lose your mask while diving. My question was - Do we need to know how to remove our mask? Will we ever purposefully remove our mask while diving (outside of the skill test for open water cert)? I am also kinda being a bit a smart ass. ;)
@ickytrip "My question was - Do we need to know how to remove our mask?"
Well, it's much better to remove the mask yourself than have it kicked away from your buddy, isn't it? ;-) Maybe that's the only reason why we need to know how to remove it. :)
This brings back bad memories for me I done an Open Water course in Thailand and passed somehow but I never was comfortable taking the mask off fully and clearing in the experience kind of put me off diving at all now
I already know "how" to do this, just can't force myself to take my mask off underwater. My dad was a search and rescue scuba diver, I used to use his rig in our pool all the time, but when I toke my first class I couldn't take off the mask, is there any way around this or will I just have to find some way to get over it? Taking my mask off underwater is the only thing holding me back at this point.
i personally don't like it either you just hold your hands on the mask and pull it quick and keep thinking air enough air enough air enough air enough air enough
you just have to get used to it cause if it happens by accident you cant think i want to do it off it just happens btw GOOD LUCK
Guess I just got to get over it then, I'm hoping to take combat diving when I get the chance so would probably do better if I can get over this now rather then later. Do you live near the Gulf Coast? South Mississippi, if so do you know any places to get certified, found 1 place that cost 350, and another that cost 525, trying to find the lowest price around.
allot of new divers fell that when they take off there mask they lose there air, when you do go to take your mask off focus on your breathing, it will take you mind off what your doing, jut remember not to inhale through your nose ( made that mistake before)
If its targeted for the OW beginner, i feel theres too many hand actions. Typical students - first timers, are BLUR underwater. Too many hand actions confuse them.
It kinda is, dependig where you live? I took my licens in Thailand. In Phuket to be more exact, it kosted me 5300 bhat i think it was, that is very cheap, in Denmark (Where i come from) it would have been twice as much. It is very very funny. But yeah, expensive. :D
not once you buy the stuff on ebay wich is like a fair bit but you got it for prety much the rest of your life and then theres the occasional about 6$ to refil your tank at a store
We just completed our PADI with my 11 and 13 year old kids. We did everything in the water. She briefed us at the surface and under we went. It actually worked out GREAT for us that way because we had that instruction down to the second before we descended and did each task. We all passed with flying colors and our open dive was simple. (Thanks goodness for big lungs!!!)
it's an absolute "beginner" course, a confined water exercise, to be repeated in open water later. some people have a real problem with this skill so it's necessary to take it easy first time.
i suppose you were born running and didn't learn to walk first ;-)
Nonsense. There is absolutely no reason to dumb things down because it is 'too hard'. Students that are being taught to do -everything- neutrally buoyant from the -very start- do NOT have any problems with it.
who was talking about dumbing down ? were talking about getting the sub skills right then building on them... get it right before introducing more difficulty by asking an absolute beginner to do it neutral at first - sure do it later though. you should chill out its just a mask removal. i've taught very young kids to dive for example, and i certainly wouldn't task load them like that.
I'm perfectly chilled. I see students struggle all the time because they are not being taught lowest common denominator crap. Being neutrally boyuant is NOT some sort of mystical advanced skill that should wait until later. The way PADI teaches hinders people in learning how to dive and have fun.
@Mutrino Dude this skill is from pool 2 of the first course. It is what total beginners learn when they are underwater the first or second time in their life! demanding that they should do it neutrally buoyant is like demanding that at driving school they should first teach how to to reverse into a parking space and then how to use the rear-view mirrors and pedals. If people have a critical view on PADI it`s okay - but just being a PADI-Hater because it is "cool" really isn`t cool.
@Mutrino well as far as i have seen the most of padi divers master the neutrally boyant far more better than other divers on the same level. i have seen the NAUI, CMAS and ISS divers that souhld bee in the same level of training do it lot more worst than PADI divers. And one thing that clearly shows in PADI divers is that they dont flap there arms like they where flying under water like many others.
Pleasrue yes, relaxation? Not too sure. Collecting the kit, driving it there, carrying the kit, putting it on, being uncomfortable in freezing water for 40 mins, getting the kit off, putting the kit back into the car, driving home and finally washing it off isn't relaxing ;D sorry :D
I took my aow course in sydney during winter and i told myself not dive anymore here. So now i only dive in Indonesia. nice water and very relaxing and sometime i nearly fall asleep.
4.5 Good job! I particularly like the way you that remembered to continue breathing and the way you demonstrated the important of not dropping the mask. Always remember to make your hand signals clear, slow and exaggerated.
Congratulations you have performed this task to 'Demonstartion Quality'
Are there circumstances when you're gonna want to take your mask off?
ickytrip 6 months ago
@ickytrip No, but in case you loose it (happens easier than many people think) you know you don't need to panic.

God! It was terrible to do this in a pool xD The chlorine burned in my nose when I breathed. Saltwater was much better though!

all you do is when you have water in your mask, put your head back, put a bit off pressure on the top half of your mask and blow with your nose.
