PayChk, that is correct. "Allah (SWT) made it clear that defaming another Muslim in his/her absence is like eating the flesh of one's dead brother (49:12), which obviously, everybody hates. Hence, it is the most dreadful sin. Note that if the person is present, he/she may have a chance to defend himself/herself, although everybody does not have the courage to defend themselves in these circumstances. If, however, he/she is defamed in his/her absence, the damage is deep and somewhat permanent. "

A powerful simile - clearly backbiting is not to be taken lightly at all.
Yet what we see around us, it's practiced too too often.
If we can't say anything good about a soul, we must remain silent insha'Allah.
Is that so hard to do?
Not at all ... when we encompass the punishment for back-biting...!
Also, the chapter "The Slanderer" - Surat Al-Humazah relates to back-biting.
Where it begins:
"Woe to every slanderer and backbiter."
Allahu'Akbar.

at risk of sounding simple, could someone please explain the conection between the story and the passage quoted.
Is it that backbiting (gossiping) is as to eat the flesh of another?
