Couldn't help it. After 30 years, I really suck. If I play marching band stuff, some comes back naturally, but rudiments are so slow and I used to be able to paradiddle with the good mediocre guys :-)
@Cornellbtc It'll all come back in time with some practice! That's awesome that you're starting to pick it back up too! Let me know if I can help in any way and I'll do my best to do so!
@DudeItsIsaac Practice them slowly with a metronome. Just loop them over and over on one tempo for a while. Become consistent with an even rhythm and great tone quality. Once you're comfortable with that, speed the tempo up 5 bpm. Rinse and repeat 5 bpm at a time. Slowly but surely you'll be able to break your speed barrier and play them faster but you have to build a solid foundation first so start slow.
Glad I found these videos. I can make my way around a kit, but I don't know anything about drum theory. I'll be accessing these as a valuable resource from now on.
I've been playing drums for a few years, on and off, but I never really bothered to learn the rudiments. It shows so I'm getting down to basics. Your videos are excellent, really enjoying them. I like the way every one is the same format, nice and clear. Out of interest, how long did it take you to get the speed and control that you have now?
@electricfunk Many thanks for the kind words! I've been drumming for about 14 years so it's been a long process and is always a work in progress! However, any drummer can accelerate their results by focusing on snare drum exercises and rudiments because the exercises get straight to the point and allow you to focus on the aspect of drumming that you want to improve without any extra distractions.
Im play snare in a pipe band in northern ireland, but we are taught to play a single parriddle with no accents at all. Then we learn them putting accent on the 1st beat and as we play move the accent to the 2nd beat etc and so on untill we are playing the accent on the 2nd beat of the double tap at the end. Do you also do this? Your playing is great. Good instructional video
@skerr661 Yep! There are many different ways to accent, or not accent, paradiddles and they are all great to work up. It's fun to shift the accent around the paradiddle as you suggested as it makes for excellent practice! Many thanks for watching and commenting - it's awesome to hear from someone on the other side of the globe! :-) I'm looking forward to having more conversations with you!
Thank you for the positive feedback. I am sure it will uplift his confidence. I can see your videos will be very instrumental to his journey of becoming a successful snare player.thank you
My son who is 14 yrs old is on his high school band playing the tuba, he has a big interest in playing the snare. He is a freshman in high school and next year he wants to audition for the drumline..He is currently taking snare lessons and is learning basic rudiments..He has a piano background and guitar..Would you think there is enough time for preparation for the snare auditon next year? BTW this video is well explained and very clear cut...My son will should like this video.Thank you.
@edzy100 It's certainly possible since he has that much music knowledge and also already knows how to march. That being said, it takes time to develop the technique and muscles required for modern day rudimental drumming. If he puts in the time and works really hard I think it's definitely do-able given his background.
@chatow2 Hey thank you very much for taking the time to watch all of these videos and comment on all of them! I really appreciate your support and am glad that they have helped you out!
@DDRsensation Thanks, Vincent!! :-) I'll add those episodes to the list and get them uploaded in the next couple of weeks! Thanks for the suggestions! :-)
Your head looks like a penis. Thanks for the drum lesson though :)
