I wish the BBC could compete with Sky for more live Sport. It's such a shame. And I miss Grandstand dearly, everything about it, the ''occasion'' of it all, and of course, the theme tune. Bring it back!
Why does evryone care grandstand is gone? there is still all the same stuff on saturday afternoon on bbc 1 except its in seperate programmes instead of all 1 programme, i dont get why people are complaining, whats the difference?
I think the time is right for it to come back. F1 is back on BBC, they've got live championship football (albeit for only 10 games in a year but its better than nothing) they've still got their golf and their rugby and MotoGp but if they wanna make it a success again then they need more horse racing and more tennis and if need be then more athletics. BBC needs grandstand.
@Gleekazoid46 But have they got the money to compete with Sky - they've just lost the World Athletics to Channel 4, memories of 1999 when the same channel took the cricket from them. Give it ten years and I predict Sky will have everything, the World Cup, Olympics, the lot. If that happens, we'll have to pay to watch sport on TV, that is if we're still interested in sport by that stage.
BBC bring back grandstand at once!! I pay your rip off licence fee and I want it back. So get your fingers out if your arses and get it back on you fools!!!!
The BBC needs to get its priorities right. Their sports coverage relies on "event" telly. Clare Balding was interviewed at the Open Golf Championship and admitted she's now a freelance, which is probably how a lot of their presenters will end up the way things are going. If you look at the Saturday afternoon schedules, they are a joke, becoming more like weekday daytime. I fear for the coverage of the 2012 Olympics.
ha a new era. they hardly show any saturday sport. how they just show fucking shit like bargin hunt and to buy or not to buy. bascilly copying their weekday shedule. that show how cheap the bbc has got, and the fact that tv is getting shitter and shitter
Thats a blast from the past, you can almost taste your saturday tea just listening to that....incidently did anyone ever watch Grandstand from start to finish?
I agree. Makes me think of getting in affer Saturday morning shopping, catch the end of "Going Live" (the hot seat) and watching Football Focus. Also makes me think of the vidiprinter and the smell of roast dinner at my Grandparents house!
She used to look so dowdy and plain. But at 44.5 years at the snooker championships the other night she looked so sexy and so much better. I would now confirm my 25 year old 8 inch dick would love to pound her ass and mouth
"Moving into a new era" - who did the BBC think they were kidding?! Saturdays, and sport on the BBC have never been the same since. The only change in the right direction the beeb made was to finally get Formula 1 back AND play it's famous "guitar powerstrings" intro music. Now go the full hog auntie beeb - bring our Sat Grandstand back! Stop paying that prick ross £6million etc, which shows you haven't got a clue when it comes to spending OUR licence fee money.
It's never been known as the '"guitar powerstrings" intro music' - everyone knows it's 'The Chain'
I don't think Grandstand is any loss... this introduction show how much they were struggling to fill the time then. At least now if there's no sport to show the sports dept aren't obliged to fill it with rubbish!
@593OLYMPUS I grew up with Grandstand but I can't imagine many people watching it when you can watch Jeff Stelling, Chris Kamara and the boys on a Saturday afternoon! Long love Soccer Saturday!
The original intros were best - they always seemed sporty, and made me want to go down to the field and have a game of footy with the lads back in the day, and then off the pub for a pint and a fag (can't do that nowadays.)
They ended it because they no longer had any good sport to put on the programme! I seem to remember it ended up being just horse racing and some curling! Maybe with the F1 back the Beeb can restart it. Love the old Grandstand music :)
Used to get me through many a boring Saturday/Sunday back in the 80s and the 90s

I think the Beeb removed this show because there's no sports that appeal to muslims, i.e Stone yer wife for doing fuck all etc!

It's gone from the telly and, while it wouldn't be the same, bringing Grandstand back on the radio might, just might work.
