I appreciate this guy's knowledge of music and how he chooses to express it but I've always thought that it's more important and harder to create complex beats that are also good to the ear. I mean anyone who has had the proper teaching and experience drumming can do this as long as you spend enough time behind that set. The hard part about music is creating a song that comes alive when it's played, the notes come together and give birth to music. This, to me, is just math and a lot of hard work
That kit has to be worth of $150k. Guitar players shell out that kind of money for a Vintage guitars & amps. Bozzio is eccentric to say the least, but he can play (and teach at the University level). He worked for Frank Zappa. You had to be a musical wizard to pass Frank's entrance exam (he was rough on drummers), and a bit eccentric (nuts).
He is like the John Nash of the drums....not that he is a genius or nobel prize. He has an pseudo-schizophrenic obsession with toms. Some of them are real. Others imaginaries. Never seen anything like that IN MY LIFE. Such a waste of equipment. Enough drums to feed an entire third world drum academy.
he is 60 yrs old men hahahahahaha try to see more of his videos and check if u can handle the drums he use and still do he is just fooling around on his office jajajajajajajjaajajaja bunch of haters!!
Independence is his specialty. He is more interested in musical experimentation these days. What make Terry great is the fact that he can here all these sounds in his head, as if they were being played by a drum circle. He is playing a complex composition here, not adhering to a crowd, so one who knows him can see why other people clearly don't understand what he's doing.
Ladies and gents the great Terry Bozio,,,, No No kill it tha cymbal has way to much tone I want it to sound like old pots and pans,,, tighten the head up to the point they alomost pop,,, there thats it its my sound,,, My wall of shit!! wtf he is some great drummer gimme a fucking break
This is what you listen when you want to hear CRAP. OH and then listen to how people (as usuall will DRONE on and on about his complex this polyrythm this and that). Come on if it sounds bad and has NO feel then: IT SOUNDS BAD AND HAS NO FEEL !! LOL. p.s. Maybe if he played a bigger kit it might be more enjyable I mean he needs more things to hit. Sounds like a fucking down syndrome kid that they let play the kit. I keep expecting somone to say "Ok Timmy, thats enough".
@Nintenkid91 i fell like his drum set is famous because of him... He needs a drum set like this to explore all his potencial. note the melody played with tons and bells. A drummer must have much more than just speed...
The bigger the kit THE MORE POSSIBILITIES!!!!!! duh man i mean having only a snare hi-hat and bass does not work well does it but having crashes splashes rides hi hat toms snare double bass lets u access more songs o and china
It's necessary to him, yes. To you, perhaps not. Check out some of those videos of him over on the right from 25 years ago. He's on an 8 piece kit, and sounding, dynamically, like no other drummer out there. The bigger the kit, the more sounds you have access to. That's all.
this is just my opinion and please dont kill me for saying this but when someone has a drum set like this it kinda shows me that they dont have enough dynamic to get the same sound out of say a 4-7 piece kit.. obviously you can get a lot more pitches out of this size of a kit but is it really nesessary? thats just my view
@MiniJackAssChannel You have a valid point but I don’t think it applies here. Especially when you consider Terry (in this clip) is just doing a simple exercise. However your point rings true when it comes to average drummers that can’t seem to get past a certain level. Some cling to the idea that bigger APPEARS better. Some of the best local drummers I’ve recorded in the last 25 years have used 4 and 5 piece kits.
@RayHamburger yeah, thats the point im trying to get at. haha. Terry obviously knows how to use it but a lot of people don't. im only a freshman and ive unanimously been voted best drummer in a school of 3200 kids and i only use a 4 piece lol
@DionH62 well not every musician uses EVERY single part of their instrument for each song. just like how a piano player doesn't use EVERY key on the piano for every song. that would sound terrible. some songs require certain drums while other songs require other drums.
@pwnage51 i know, it just seems a shame to have that many toms and cymbals for a drum solo like that.. and yes i know you don't use every note, i play piano, drums and guitar myself.
@BRIDOGG19666 No, I would bestow that honor on Mike Portnoy. Bozzio's work with Zappa speaks for itself. This is something I can't relate to but I won't call it crap. Portnoy's playing, I'll call crap.
@AfterShockTheBand1 lol, DW must hate when they see him come walking throw the factory doors, workers probably run and hide, hell no, this guy has enough drums, what else does he want us to make for him
@Kliwadenko clearly, you know nothing about the concept of bozzio's drum kit. it's not over-compensation. his kit is set up and tuned so that he can play melodies. if you listen closely, he's not just randomly hitting drums. he's playing different notes and melodies to create a melodic song. you just need to listen instead of making stupid penis jokes
@pwnage51 what about timpani sets with no more than 8 pieces where you can do that pseudo oriental scale melodies? what about tone pedals?. so i repeat myself, too much shit for what he is really doing
@Kliwadenko Repeating a stupid comment doesn't improve it. One of the obvious flaws in your reasoning is that apparently it's based on the premise that what he recorded here in 5 minutes is all he ever plays. Of course you can take away notes from any instrument, and still play melodies, as long as there are still 2 or more tones. He happens to want more options, but of course you know his art better than he does. Which one of Zappa's bands did you play in?
It was amazing up until the end, when he started randomly thrashing at the symbols, but I have never heard someone play a bassline with tuned kick drums before.
If someone unknown played that overloaded drum kit (wearing that silly hat), then you would all be haters, even if he played much better than Bozzio!!
I do think its stupid having a kit this big but.. i do realize that he's playing a piece of music which in its own right is a song in itself, i think it sounds great. people making dumb comments on his playing are brain dead idiots that think a big kit needs to be blasted to pieces which ISN'T always the case

@isildrum And this is his most enjoyable work...:) At least among those I,ve already listened to. For melodies one must use lot drums - at least 16 for 2 octaves (snare and bass are indifferent) - to have tunes, but You are right using the word "metaphysics of drumming" to Bozzio.
Sorry, but there is no song in existence/set of songs in existence which requires a drum kit that big. I am all for big drum kits as long as they are used. The reality is that what he is playing in this video could be done without a considerable difference on a kit with 2 bass/2 racks/2 floors and a snare maximum.
You can't approach this type of solo with the same attitudes that you would a rock or jazz solo. This is taking a much more experimental approach to drumkit percussion and actively pushing to see what can actually be done by a drummer in terms of sounds and style. I love that he's taking his drumming in this type of avante-garde direction, it shows his musicianship and passion for percussion and I have massive respect for those qualities in a modern artist.
whats the point of having 2 bass drums that arent even properly on the kit, i have one bass drum

There's a lot of people listening on shitty laptop speakers..
Who can't hear the perfect 4th in the two kick drums he's playing? Or the melody on the toms? (Though his top ones are painfully out of tune)
