@SupahMunch I've asked Andrew about this before and he said we probably could build fake door jams and columns with plaster of paris to break through. But we'ver never really looked at the best method, or how much materials it would take. What some people do to break through walls is find a doorway (remove the door) and use drywall to make it look like a seamless wall. Then they throw their stunt guys through wall where the doorway is. (cont...)
@beatdownboogie We did once build a set with fake walls and 2x4 frames behind them. But we used hard paneling instead of drywall. But you could build a fake a couple feet out from a real wall and use materials that can be bashed through. You just have to know where the frame is.
But if the desired effect is just a small crack in cement and cloud of dust, after effects is good choice. It would work best if the camera remained at the same angle during the shot..
@beatdownboogie You basically need a transparent crack image (videocopilot action essentials has some), and transparent movies of dust or flying rubble depending on the look you want. Then if the camera moves or shakes you might need to do motion tracking to make the effect work. And you might have to mask around the fist and anything else in front of the crack.
@beatdownboogie Ah brilliant, I see. Well although i've used after effects before, and it would be relatively simple to create that kinda look, I still wonder about it looking a bit too patchy (I've used it but not mastered it) I wonder if you'd be able to do something similar to the door frame/dry wall thing, but on a smaller scale.
Eg: Maybe a small to medium window shaped hole in a wall with a something an inche or two behind it to stop it breaking all the way through? As for the dust..chalk?
@SupahMunch Yeah, should work fine with a little bit of paint and something to keep it in place and smooth out seams - maybe some putty or something. Baby powder is a good white dust, and there's something called Fuller's Earth that's more expensive, but stuntmen use it for impacts in fights - it's more brown and earthy. The plaster is pretty brittle, so you'd want to make it thick enough to stand up to the prepping work, ;o)
@Oerbaify The sugar glass stings pretty good, and can hurt. The plaster plates are much easier to break. They pretty much explode with a slight tap. We'd break the plaster plates over each others just for fun, but not the sugar glass. ;o)
you think i could like line it with foam and throw it like a frisbee?
that would be hilarious, i need a good camera before i can shoot.
and maybe be older... because since i'm 14 i won't really be taken seriously... but it will supply many lulz for hitting my friends with. i doubt you guys do, but i could give you a guide to Ballistic gel.
@LieutenantDan605 Hehe, you could throw it like a frisbee. I don't know how it would feel getting hit with the edge of it, but if you avoided headshots (or maybe tried that foam idea), it'd probably be fine. It breaks pretty easy. You gotta be a little delicate with the way you wield it so that it doesn't break before the intended impact.
@LieutenantDan605 and that's pretty smart about the age thing. If it's films/skits you're talking about, I think the trick is to write something that is believable for that age. Or you can go the other way and make it a joke by using big fake mustaches, ridiculous dialog, etc. The other thing we used to do was use SWAT type costumes with masks to hide our younger age. Just be careful people don't think your running around with real guns and call the cops, hehe.
That's why i'd just make whoever is my cameraman wear like a baloon hat or something like a pink neon shirt.
and if the cops come over i could just straiten things out, i wouldn't be brandishing a firearm and there wouldn't be anything really illegal going on... that and i'm buddies with one of the cops around here.
@beatdownboogie Banksy always said that you could get away with practically any kind of public vandalism if you wear a bright orange vest that says "Public Works".

I'm curious, Would this be useful for a concrete wall breaking effect? Eg a fist hitting a wall or something and it cracks a bit?
Or would after effects be more effective?
