"any fool can get to the bottom of gorge...but the trick is getting back out again." Ha ha ha! Very true. I envy you. That's a great find. I love the mountains of N. Georgia and W. Carolina. I've been all over them, but barely made a dent in the things there are to see. You could spend a lifetime and still not see everything. Thanks for sharing...well, you didn't exactly share because you didn't tell us where it is, but...Ha ha ha!
Are you sure this is a mine. I do know that there is an old railroad alignment that was started back before the Civil War but it was never complete. Some tunnels were started and never complete. One is Stumphouse Tunnel on Hwy 28 in South Carolina just north of Wahalla. There is another tunnel just west of the Chatooga River that is 1390 ft which is also unfinished. You could have found another one. If so would like to know where it is and see if it could be.
That looks like a gold mine to me but there was probably quartz and other minerals that are often associated with gold taken out. Probably Gold was being panned out of the stream for some time until that "mother load" vein was found and chased till it probably petered out. Just speculation.
Nice video. I live in the North Georgia area and have been told stories of mines that are near and around some of the mountains. My Dad found two mines about 40 years ago as he was exploring off the beaten path. One of them had a rail cart at the entrance and tracks running back into it. He also has found Indian pyramids off the path.
What part of North Georgia are you in? Im in the Dalton, Cohutta, Chatsworth, Ramhurst area. If anyone in North Ga are wants to go Metal Detecting, for gold of course. Send me a email. I have a map to these old mines also and would like to go investigate.
I'm curios where is this mine? Because I live in north GA. I do metal detecting as a hobby and this could be a good place to metal detect. Of course I will not go down in that mine or cave. Real gold as been found in the north GA. Most of the real gold is in the mountains of north Georgia.
I would definetley pan the stream's, holes, riffles and outside banks. Keep an eye out for that black sand, it's a good indicator that gold is pressent. Also keep an eye out for "pretty rocks" as well as small round crusty looking ones (ruby).
It definitely looks like a mine. in your area I'd say amethyst, garnet, ruby, silver, or gold. But you're right to stay out of it without some heavy bracing and at least two other people with you.
Concentrate instead on the flat area and the stream. Got a metal detector? If it was an old mine then there should be some relics from those days, people are always dropping things.
I live in NC. but we go to north GA. alot because it's close, that would be so cool to find something like that!!!! It's definately an old gem mine there is no doubt in my mind.I hunt but have never run across anything like that. We also have been to some of the old mines in the area and are supposed to have an old garnet mine where we live but I haven't found it yet. We just started gem hunting and are pretty good at it,I would be in heaven to run across something like that!!!
That is sick. I just got a metal detector & have had my mind set on exploring a gold mine, but now you guys got me freaked that I'll fall down a 60ft mineshaft.
I live in GA & saw this video of a guy in Dallas, GA explore an abandoned mine. Looked sick. Ruby Falls is sick too if you ever visit GA & Want to go to a cool cave.
There is a historical map of all mines in N. Georgia. The folks at the gold museum in Dahlonega can find it for you. See if this location is on there. No one would store shine at this expense and trouble. It would be cooked and taken away to sell ASAP
I'd love to stumble (around) an old mine. But as much as I'd love to go INSIDE, I'd never do that. I don't want to die alone in a dark hole that has crumbled around me and blocked the entrance. For those of you who don't know, mineshafts sometimes are vertical .... and you can walk right into one and fall in without seeing it due to overgrowth. You can fall hundreds of feet. You're dead.
My own take on that would be that it wasn't a 'gem mine' but rather a hiding place to store the illegal booze you say was being manufactured at the nearby still. Otherwise, why would you call it a 'gem mine?' No records. Why gems?
Well, you could be right, but I've lived in Georgia most of my life and I've never heard of anyone digging a 50 - 60 ft. mine shaft through solid rock just to store alcohol. There are no records that I know of; I referred to it as a "gem mine" because gem mining is very popular locally and I think there is a good chance that they were mining precious stones. At this point, I don't think that what they were after matters too much. It is just a beautiful, unusual and interesting place.
@rainmakerat92 Hey you can call it what you want it's pretty freaking cool! And I know I wouldn't be digging through a mountain of stone to hide BOOZE!! I agree a gem mine is a much better thought! Great Find!! I'd wanna check it out more i'd have to dig metel detect something. I'd be looking for those GEMS or maybe GOLD!! Ya never know! Great Stuff!!
Rabon county has: Citrine,Smokey Quartz,Amethyst,Clear Quartz,Star Rose Quartz,Epidote,Beryl,Amazonite,Corundum, and Kyanite. The mine is very likely a Gold or Copper mine. Pan in the stream close by and you should recover some clues as to what was there. The old "still" could be mining equipment. If it is rusty it wasn't a still. They were made of copper.I would love to hear more about it.
There are several amethyst and corundum mines in the area and none (that I know of) that were used for gold mining. Most of the gold mining done in this area was (and is) done by panning in streams. I feel that this mine was used to mine precious stones, but no one really knows for sure. The old still .25 mile downstream is similar to other old stills in the woods around here. Mainly it is old metal barrels that have been split open with axes, along with some lead pipes lying around.
The first 10 - 15 feet has already collapsed, effectively creating a dam across the entrance. There's about 2 feet of water inside, and barely enough room to stand-up in. Its very creepy and spooky, and there's not much to see inside. Once was enough!
@rainmakerat92 Yeah I agree with you there. I would hate to have those rocks come down behind or worse on you. It would be cool to have a little robotic camera though with lights to go down the thing.
@rainmakerat92 wow you were brave for going in there in the first place. not only do you have to worry about it caving in on top of you but also the presence of gases and bears. pretty neat spot though buddy. i would love to do some exploring around there myself. peace from mobile, al.
Looks suspiciously familiar!
