ok actually they aren't the ones who are money hungry and greedy its the networks and the other "big wigs" who have millions of dollars but can't bare to part with a small portion of it to give the writers their fair royalties. they are the ones you should be calling names seeing as they are the ones who want everything and can't stand to let any money go.
Boo f-ing hoo, we can't write well enough to make a living and we refuse to get a regular job inbetween our writing jobs....... someone feed us. We aren't greedy it is the guys running the networks.......... wait oops I desided to be a writer insted of an owner of industry. Never mind still feel sorry for me I may only make $105,000.00 in one year as 50% of the other writers do. Fell sorry for the six figure guy.... Please???
I support the WGA fully and 100%. The only problem is, as an actor, I can't set up Auditions for CSI Miami, which really kinda bummed me out. But still, the WGA deserves everything. I didn't know the President of the West WGA writes Futurama. That's awesome!

its not just the shows, the music industry is basically in the same situatuin as well, unless you use itunes to actually buy songs, or buy Cd's the artist you're listening to probably doesn't have that multi million dollar house like people imagine, they probably are regular people like us, and music artists need that money... why? because if you like their music then they deserve that money
Maybe if the WGA would actually negotiate a deal could be reached. I understand wanting what you believed you're entitled to, but this standstill we're at right now is doing no one any good
The last strike lasted 22wks im not surprised if this one will last longer, since this time the topic is about internet platform vs royalties. A good example of why the writers are wrong. If you gave me a good idea for a business and I created that business with my own money, should I give you a percentage of my profits? If you didn't patent (copyright) the idea then you weren't really asking for a part of what I created since you didn't invest your own money. What writers want is more. With the state of entertainment today (crappy as hell) I actually believe writers deserve less.
But the writers are the creators. that's where you're wrong. If it was not for them, there would be no business for these corporate fucks. If you think tv is bad now, just wait.
So your metaphor of what's right is stealing someone else's invention for your own profit, without giving them anything in return except to spit on them if they bother you about it.
so the best way to fix "pretty crappy" entertainment is to pay writers less. You must be related to the douche that conglomerated Mcdonalds. Make me a million dollars a month, and I'll pay you 8...no wait $6.75 an hour.
Union destroyed manufacturing jobs in the US. The SAG is responsible for movie projects costing more (and the cost being pushed off on us ticket buyers). Socialism doesn't work. Capitalism works. If the writers hate their pay scale then invest their own money in their own projects.
Great to know that Socialism only works in 95% of the entire world, excluding the U.S. We're to busy watching the dollar getting royally bitch-slapped by the socialist Euro. This just in, even the socialist regime of Canada has managed to bring their money to similar monetary value.
And as an IATSE member, who has already lost one job to this stupid strike, I say FUCK YOU, GET BACK TO THE TABLE, AND STOP ACTING LIKE A BUNCH OF BABIES!
No, SOME OF THEM do. There are a few writers that are pretty well off, but most of the writers only make a few thousand dollars a year from writing. For most of the year, when they're not working on films or TV shows, they rely on residuals to stay afloat.
that's right. Actually, the ones that don't sell many scripts have seconday jobs. Once you get your foot in the door, ie, sell one or two scripts, it's very easy to get into the writing aspect of Hollywood. Those writers either suck or don't know how to play ball.
It doesn't matter how much money the writers make, if you write something, and a company streams it on the internet along with advertisements and makes money off of those ads, they're profitting off of your work. You deserve to get paid, as your labor and efforts made the company money.
Then maybe they should get a good agent or lawyer to draw that up in your contract. Otherwise EARN that privelege. God, it's the writer's idea. It's also the studio's money. Why don't a few of you socialist wackos wake up to the reality that this is a ridiculous strike that is only to hurt the entire industry. Give them more money my butt!
What Jesse Jackson is doing there is, as he said in his own words, fighting for the workers to share in the participation and growth of their own industry. To anyone who thinks this about whiny Hollywood rich folks just looking to get richer: Jesse Jackson doesn't show up to places where it's just about rich folks getting richer! This is about fair-is-fair!
I love all of the whiny bitchy negative comments that all basically amount to "WAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!! WAAAAAAAA!!!!!! We're gonna miss our Pwecious TV shows!! WAAAAAAAAAA!!!!"
From what I've read on various sites, there is a logical reason. Because of the strike, studios get to recind certain movie/tv deals and get hundreds of thousands of dollars returned to their pockets. Many studio heads get bonuses based on these savings. The studio heads are not hurting at all. Anyone laid off can draw unemployment BUT- the writers cannot. So the studios save all the way around and get to see many of the writers struggle.
The contract was up October 31, 2007 and both sides were aware that the strike could start as of November 1, 2007. When corporate chose to walk away with no decent offer on the table and in such bad faith, the writers voted to strike as of November. If the writers had seen a good faith effort on the part of the studios it sounds like they would have strongly considered deferring the strike. However, they certainly couldn't wait a year. As of now there is NO contract.
Since when has Seth MacFarlane been so pro-union? According to the Hollywood Reporter he has a multi million dollar deal with Google and Adsense to produce scripted programming for the web already. I doubt anybody working on those projects is in the union, are they? Does that mean we get to see Family Guy on the web with Seth using non-union writers? I'll take it either way.
he's not pro union. at least he wasn't 7 days ago.he's just fodder for those fatcats. Seth Macfarlane and Jess Jackson. fightin' for the rights of the poor and disenfranchised. It's the end of civilization. wake up wake up wake up wake up
He's very pro WGA. The details of his deal will be under the WGA and set a standard for future deals of this nature. This is not the first time Seth has used his position to assert creator/writer rights.
Phana, your theory doesn't hold, because if anything, the networks will keep shows they normally would have cancelled. Because of the strike, they can't put new shows into productions. They have to use what they already have and they will burn off shows that they probably wouldn't have brought back.
Anyway you've missed the point. The strike is for the future not just for today.
I totally support the WGA. They're completely right and they deserve more. It's FANTASTIC that the SAG is supporting them!! I hope that the networks get their heads out of their asses soon and good luck to the WGA!
I support the WGA 100%, their demands are reasonable the studios are just being unbelievably greedy. Yet I have one problem with the picket signs. This is a WRITER strike, why aren't the signs more creative?

Wouldnt it be nice if this strike reawakened the union spirit in America. Unions created our middle class. The middle class has been destroyed in the last 20 years.
Perhaps the realization that we are all in this together can create a middle class once again.
